I see a lot of people bagging this video. It's for instruction purpose guys so get your heads out of your arse's and give this guy a break. This is Remy Presas style Modern Arnis teaching "THE 12 BASIC STRIKES". To the guy that says "Those 12 basic strikes are not launched at any part of the body, blah blah". If you can't strike one of those 12 vital points then you would try to strike somewhere else close to that point where you have been trained to strike would you not? This Video is Basics.
I study Bahala Na Giron Style and those are pretty close to what we do except we have a 4 light and an 8 light plus our 10th strike is with the dagga. It's different ways for different style types. These basic strike are a road map to real strikes which is different when done fast and real so don't think he's telegraphing his attack.
those 12 basic strkes are not just to be launched at any part of the body. they target 12 vital points of the body. part of arnis training is accuracy. any filipino school kid who took it up in their PE knows this.
With 12 simple stances in Fiore, you get 144 moves (some are strikes) simply by moving from one stance to another. Why teach individual strikes? Also, why are there downward strikes? The sheer powerlessness of downward striking from a high position is worthless: it can be countered, your body is exposed, you have a weak grip, and its hard to be accurate with.
sure, but if someone is loking for an easy sport than he should try golf or wow
and downward strikes are relativly unblockable if they serve the blocking purpose at same time
since they deflect the oponent's blade, while they are not stopable by the oponent's free hand
(not sure if i'm explaining it right. but imagine someone would perform 1. or 2. and you'd block his hit with the blade in the upper position and perfomed downward strike in the same move
the position of the strike up high combined with downward whipping momentum into any part of the body is devastating. gravity will help drive that weapon into your opponent.
seriously...how long can the body be exposed that would make something like this useless. have you done any kind of FMA training? if you did, you know that any downard strike with a weapon in any martial art is the most lethal in the arsenal.
He is instructing to an audience with no experience. One thing that he does forget to mention, and I can tell he was taught incorrectly, he is not protecting his weapon. He needs to protect his weapon by keeping it close to his body and cock it further back when he strikes. Otherwise, he will lack power with his stick. and believe me, getting hit with a stick doesn't hurt very much. At least this is how I was instructed by GM Dr. Remy Presas and GM Francisco Navales.
Has anybody heard of the fighting style/ martial arts called "Escrima"?

I think you have made a very good simple BASIC video for someone with almost no knowledge to understand.
As to which is better -- Fords or Chevys , take your pick. The bickering about "styles" is childish.

yeah, I have already started learning this so when I sign up for a weapons class with escrima sticks I'll be able to keep up a little better.
