Great building. Was that traditional-looking base built at the same time as the glass part of tower, or was there and the building was built atop.

The base was the original Hearst building and had landmark status. In NYC landmark buildings given this cannot be modified or changed in anyway, but mainly on the outside of the building, most status allows for modification inside. Because of this, Hearst Corp was able to gut the entire in interior creating a huge open multi floor lobby. Massive vertical and diagonal struts which hold the tower above up, are exposed in the lobby. The original outside was then left completely unchanged.

This is a beautiful building, one of my favorite in NYC.
