Eddie performed this for us at a 1995 private show. He said he started writing the lyrics down while on a bus going from his native Brooklyn, NYC to Nashville. The bus was passing through Kentucky and it was raining like hell, so his mind wandered & he came up with the lyrics. RIP Eddie Rabbitt.
You know, everyone keeps saying that Elvis' version is better and it may be but what I can't help but notice as a musician, is that Elvis' version used this arrangement almost identically. Very beautiful song by Eddie and when you think how this song, the arrangement, the entire composition came from Eddie Rabbit's heart and soul.....awesome stuff!
The dude was an incredible songwriting lyrical master.
Spoke, You are absolutely right. Eddie did write this with two of his friends back then. One which was my uncle, Eddie was and still will be one of the greatest country music legends of all time. When he did what he did. He made music fit for even a King...
Frankly, I suspect that by 1990, Eddie deliberately "countrified" the song to match his current style. Go back and listen to Eddie's big albums like Horizon, and they're much more pop crossover. While Elvis would obviously have embellished the song for his own style, I suspect that Eddie's original version was more straightforward and driving, like Elvis' version.
@macsnafu Okay, I just listened to what I assume was Eddie's original version on iLike. it isn't quite as driving as Elvis' version, but it IS more straightforward.
Such an honorable man...he gave full credit to Elvis for the recording, and didn't egotistically announce his own writing credit. I always preferred Eddie's version.. I mean afterall, it's all HIS. Regarding this missing a verse: due to the show keeping the time down on the performers.
@kp365 As I have to repost occasionally here, Eddie was doing a medly of his hits and this was part of it. If this was the only song he performed, it would have been full length.
GREAT@@@@@@@@@@@ THE ONE WHO WROTE IT..... ASK ME ANYTHING YOU WANT, I KNOW.... I USED TO BE IN HIS BAND..... Eddie's version is the best - the way it's supposed to be..... he's the greatest singer/songwriter ever - - people i think forget about his 25 #1 singles and EVERYTHING HE STOOD FOR... no drama.. it was all just him.... so sad that people have not really done something about this, as he was one of the greatest, and there will never be anyone like him (he's not the one that has the hat on, and is political) HES THE TRUE COUNTRY GREATEST!!!.... RIP EDDIE... WE LOVE YOU AND WE MISS YOU........

I had never seen/heard Eddie sing this, obviously, his own composition. I love it -- it is his own interpretation of his song. I think Elvis brought a lot of power to the song, in his strong voice, and made it into a huge hit. It was a win/win for them both!! Sad to hear the intro, as we all know Eddie is gone, now too. RIP, Eddie and Elvis!! You are both missed!!
@erikholtrop1970 thestory i heard was eddie wanted to release it and Elvis told eddie that if he recorded it the song nor you will be known. but if you let me cut it the song will be number 1 and everybody will know you. and eddie saw things elvis`s way and the rest is history great song thanks eddie miss you.
I didn't realize Eddie wrote this song either, it is my Favorite Elvis song also. I did see Eddie once in concert with Crysta Gayle and it was a wonderful show.
Obviously I love the Elvis version. I find it hard to compare the two because they are two different interpretations. Eddie's is more heartfelt and sad to me. The Elvis one is very dramatic but his vocals soar and as a singer I've never heard anyone better than Elvis. There are other great voices like Orbison that are equal, but nobody better. Eddie Rabbitt though is a different deal...he's a singer-songwriter and all around artist. I've got nothing but respect. -JD
I didn't know Eddie Rabbitt wrote the song, but it is wonderful, what I do remember is that Ronnie Milsap does background vocals for Elvis's version...Great song!!
to: OnyxtheDrummer..........Ronnie Milsap also did a song titled 'Pure Love'... remember that one??????......which just so happen to be written by Eddie Rabbitt!!
The first time i've hard about Eddie Rabbitt was around 1978 cause i used to be a big Eastwood fan."Every which way but loose" was the film.then i went to live to the States (VA.)in 1986 and i felt in love with country music and there were great songs and performers that decade one of them was Eddie Rabitt indeed. i've got a bunch of his albums in my collection. it's a shame he and Dan Seals are not anymore on this earth but anyway their music will be in our hearts forever. regards from Peru.
Eddie Rabbit was a great person. We met him in Branson, Missouri after a show. He was my wife's favorite. He took pictures with his and treated us like family. He even gave my young daughter an Italian name... :) He was the Best ....Always think of the person first and then the talent!! God Bless You Eddie!!!
I knew him personally.... (very sad when he passed in '98) He's one of the greatest - with 21 #1 singles, and after now that he's gone, seems not to be recognized for anything anymore... when he did so much for everyone when he was alive (fans, charities etc) RIP EDDIE... I will never forget.......

It happened when I went to Graceland for the first time in 86 and left with this song in my mind and to this day. WOW!!!
@boxerfan2 yes it is true, eddie wasnt a smoker and got lung cancer from secomd hand smoke at the smoke filled clubs he played.. a tragic loss to country music when he passed away
I dont think people realized what an accomplished song writer Eddie was, on top of a performer. Eddie will always be remembered as one of the true greats in Country Music History, RIP Eddie
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hey "spockvideo"..you said..."Elvis's version was great but it's hard to beat the original"..jaja..elvis's version is 73837583785785 times better that this...!...so don't talk if you don't know
@sivvybee If there was one exception it was Dolly Parton. Elvis really wanted to record I Will Always Love you; unfortunately Col. Parker insisted that she give Elvis half the rights and she refused. (supposedly he also asked about singing Coat of Many Colors but she turned it down for the same reason). She always regretted Elvis not singing her song - course Whitney Houston made Dolly a ton of money 20 years later.
not to take away from this video, but the recorded version was something very special. two the best country performer during the 70`s and 801s was eddie and gene watson.
I miss eddie too.. I think that this is a great tip of the hat to ELVIS AARON PRESLEY.. That shows me that he respected the man... I will miss both men so much as I grew up listening to both guys all thanks to my Dad... RIP guys... You will always be loved...
It is great to see a very talented songwriter get recognized for his ability. This wasn't his only hit, but the fact that Elvis made it a hit certainly made people more aware of who Eddie Rabbitt was. More people would have known of him because of Elvis's version of his song, similar to many great songwriters who get recognized by a great performer making a hit from one of their songs. Glad he was able to enjoy the recognition before his death.
Eddie could sing, so I'm not including him in this comment. I always love to hear the song writer sing the song they wrote, even if they can't sing. Burt Bacherach isn't a great singer by any means, and I like to hear him sing his songs. It's almost like you're actually listening to the heart and brain speak rather than just the voice.
Why all the hate? Elvis did this song amazingly. Eddie was a great songwriter & performer, too. Stop all the negative hate. We have enough of that in this world.
leenie6000=Eddie rabbitt wrote all his songs,Elvis couldn't even read the words to the stuff he was attemptung to sing from a sheet of paper he was so pilled and coked up.Eddie wrote for elvis,Elvis wrote nothing.Rabbitt died a tragic death ten years ago from lung cancer,Elvis abused himself and others and would have gone to Prison for twenty years had he ever got caught with the drugs he was using.
i still miss this guy , he was always one of my very favorites.Elvis did a great job of this but Eddie is nothing to sneeze at either, Luv ya forever Eddie..
A man name Rabbitt was only here for a little while, but what a impact he made on Original Country Music. He was the epitome of Original Country Music and a hell of a nice man.
Give the guy a break - Once Elvis had sung a sung, it was done. You can never hear a song that Elvis ha sung, with someone else - no matter how hard they try...It just ain´t quite as real. Even if they wrote it. The same goes for a singr like Sting. Once you heard it wth him, then thats the only rel one. Imagine Elvis singing "Roxanne" ... :-)
I get kinda tired of all the Elvis comparisons. It's 2 different people doing it their way. Eddie wrote the tune and he played it in his own unique style and I love and I also always loved Elvis's version, which I heard long before Eddie's own version. I love both in their own way. Especially hearing Eddie play it on acoustic.
Clint Black was born in Jersey, so was Mary Chapin Carpenter, Richard Sterban(Oakridge Boys), Kathie Baillie & Michael Bonagura(Baillie and the Boys), Juice Newton (Eddie's duet partner on "Both To Each Other") There's probably more, but these are off the top of my (Jersey) head! Eddie was born in Brooklyn, but loved Jersey.
Eddie, your birthday was on November 27th, and those who love your music will always remember you... I am quite sure you made your Mamma and Daddy proud.. there are not many of you around these days.. no, they don't make them like you anymore.
hi shelby, i don't mean to piss on ur parade, i realise u hav a great affection for this great performer but there is a million great other singers/writers/performers/bands out there. don't fall into a rut. open ur eyes, ears and mind to the great musos who r abliterating the musical walls and tantalizing our ears in the process. allow urself to be pushed to the boundaries
thesunsettree are you kidding me? I'm sorry but you CANNOT compare today's music to Eddie Rabbitt, Elvis, or Johnny Cash. There is NO comparison. Everyone has their own opinions. If she likes Eddie Rabbitt and you like something like Greenday you should respect her opinion. She can like whoever she damn well pleases. Got it?
ummm, no i'm not, yes i can, yes there is, and of course they do and i offered my opinion no more than that. i appreciate she loves eddie (i'm pretty sure i acknowledged that) for the record i don't really like greenday all that much (i'm assuming that was meaent to be an insult. and to answer your question, yes i 'got it' , i always 'had it'.
by the way r u familiar with - clare bowditch, sara blasko, mountain goats, josh pyke, john vanderslice, augie march, cat power, kat frankie, joan wasser, damien rice, scott matthews, the shins, m ward, xavier rudd, ani difranco, angus and julia stone, sleepy jackson, martha wainwright.
look these up if you don't know them, i think they're great, thats my opinion, that is all. afterall you are criticising me for 'alledgedly' forcing an opinion when you are doing the very same thing. as i said listen to my suggestions, if u like them great, if u don't then don't lose any sleep....i won't
thesunsettree, with all due respect, you started your comment to Shelby with your crap about pissing on her parade and then pretty much belittled her for her fondness of Eddie Rabbit. Maybe Shelby, like myself and alot of others like "real" music from the 70's and 80's...not this crap thay play today. You apparently like real music, afterall, you're here aren't you?
okie doke, then u and her stay in the 70's with the "real" music. i love the music from the 70/80s, 50/60s too, hell even the 30/40s. but i'm not stuck there and i wouldnt shit on something cos i dont want to understand it. they say u know ur getn old when u start to sound like ur parents, can i assume ur parents told you ur music was shit, no doubt they did. enjoy the 70's mate, say hi to elvis and eddie and try not to worry about the future of music its in safe hands.
I went back and read his post, he never bashed Rabbitt, he just said there are other good songwriters and musicians.
Nothing wrong with that. He is not bashing or belitting anyone for their fondness of Eddie Rabbitt, he actually admitted he was a good/great songwriter/singer. He was just saying there are good/great modern musicians too and to keep an open mind.
Today, Nov 27, was Eddie's birthday, so I just wanted to remember him and see this GREAT video again. HE WAS SPECTACULAR! Somebody please send me back in time to when he was still alive 'cause it is too sad that he is gone forever.
I went to school with Eddie's daughter Demelza in Franklin, TN. He came to school one day and talked and sang to the student body. He was AMAZING! A couple of months later he was diagnosed with cancer ( ? I can't remember exactly what) and died very soon after that. It all happened so sudden. Very, very sad. We had lots of great guest speakers at our school, but Eddie Rabbit was by far the most impressive that ever came - such a true talent. I will never forget him.
My great memory of Eddie was that I saw him in Missouri at a county fair. We were in the 2nd row and when he started to sing "I love a rainy night" it started to rain very hard.
Eddie was the best singer / musician/ songwriter / and simply the BEST ENTERTAINER in the world... I think alot of people have forgotten his music, which is very sad.... He was simply the best in the world and my idol since I was about 8 yrs old when I got my first guitar... and his 25 #1 singles along with all of his other great music will still live on forever.. He will always be missed and in our hearts forever... and his music will live on........
I loved Suspicions and you and i and kentucky rain. he is truely missed. Tim Mcgraw thought very highly of his music that is why he covered "suspicions" and I know eddie would be proud of his version. it is currently #21 on charts.
This was marvelous. I am a great Elvis fan, but this is the first time i´ve heard Eddi sing it. I am speachless. I hope you don´t mind me posting my video response with my version.
...One of my favorite songs sung by Elvis, written by the late Mr. Eddie Rabbitt. Elvis knew when he heard this song for the first time that it would become a huge record forhim; and he was correct.Thank you Eddie and Elvis, even though you have been gone for about 10 years, Eddie , your songs are still in the hearts of those who like and enjoy your music. Anyway, this special man ( Eddie) had CHARACTER and CLASS, something not readily found in the musicians of today.
Elvis helped some future country powerhouses to their big starts! Eddie Rabbitt with this song & also "Patch It Up"... And by hiring Ronnie Milsap for his New Year's Eve parties in the early 1970's...
Milsap in fact loved "Kentucky Rain" and wanted something similar to describe his homeland... In time, he would have a hit with "Smoky Mountain Rain"...
Thank you Eddie.

@boxerfan2 yes it is true, eddie wasnt a smoker and got lung cancer from secomd hand smoke at the smoke filled clubs he played.. a tragic loss to country music when he passed away
Mattea68 10 months ago
the harmony vocals, and that slide guitar made my spine shiver.

jimmy hyde, don barret, and john paul, and all the band guys are very talented. eddie even used them on studio tracs.

I dont think people realized what an accomplished song writer Eddie was, on top of a performer. Eddie will always be remembered as one of the true greats in Country Music History, RIP Eddie

Compared to Eddie's studio version of the song, this live one is much different and I like it better.

I believe that anyone who had Elvis sing there song has to feel so lucky and happy.
sivvybee 2 years ago
@sivvybee If there was one exception it was Dolly Parton. Elvis really wanted to record I Will Always Love you; unfortunately Col. Parker insisted that she give Elvis half the rights and she refused. (supposedly he also asked about singing Coat of Many Colors but she turned it down for the same reason). She always regretted Elvis not singing her song - course Whitney Houston made Dolly a ton of money 20 years later.

Awesome, I've never heard Eddie sing that song. Elvis did it great but this version is sweet also.

I actually like this version of the song better. It fits Eddie's voice better in my opinion.

I love this beautiful song.
Eddie sure knew how to write and sing.
Elvis made Kentucky Rain a hit, but it will get even better over time no matter who sings it.
The song is that good.
Elvis and Eddie knew it, and so will millions of others to come!

not to take away from this video, but the recorded version was something very special. two the best country performer during the 70`s and 801s was eddie and gene watson.

Glad he was able to enjoy the recognition before his death.
rtmusicfan 3 years ago
Eddie could sing, so I'm not including him in this comment. I always love to hear the song writer sing the song they wrote, even if they can't sing. Burt Bacherach isn't a great singer by any means, and I like to hear him sing his songs. It's almost like you're actually listening to the heart and brain speak rather than just the voice.

Another non singer, Herb Alpert had a big hit also and it was pretty damn good. I always found it painful listening to Burt Bacharach.

The drugs he used were prescribed by a doctor.

Especially hearing Eddie play it on acoustic.

poor eddie the only country singer from new jersey.
charliedontsurf70 3 years ago
Clint Black was born in Jersey, so was Mary Chapin Carpenter, Richard Sterban(Oakridge Boys), Kathie Baillie & Michael Bonagura(Baillie and the Boys), Juice Newton (Eddie's duet partner on "Both To Each Other") There's probably more, but these are off the top of my (Jersey) head! Eddie was born in Brooklyn, but loved Jersey.

thesunsettree 4 years ago
thesunsettree are you kidding me? I'm sorry but you CANNOT compare today's music to Eddie Rabbitt, Elvis, or Johnny Cash. There is NO comparison. Everyone has their own opinions. If she likes Eddie Rabbitt and you like something like Greenday you should respect her opinion. She can like whoever she damn well pleases. Got it?
yadamatrix 4 years ago
ummm, no i'm not, yes i can, yes there is, and of course they do and i offered my opinion no more than that. i appreciate she loves eddie (i'm pretty sure i acknowledged that) for the record i don't really like greenday all that much (i'm assuming that was meaent to be an insult. and to answer your question, yes i 'got it' , i always 'had it'.

thesunsettree 4 years ago
thesunsettree, with all due respect, you started your comment to Shelby with your crap about pissing on her parade and then pretty much belittled her for her fondness of Eddie Rabbit. Maybe Shelby, like myself and alot of others like "real" music from the 70's and 80's...not this crap thay play today. You apparently like real music, afterall, you're here aren't you?
mom2mkns 4 years ago
okie doke, then u and her stay in the 70's with the "real" music. i love the music from the 70/80s, 50/60s too, hell even the 30/40s. but i'm not stuck there and i wouldnt shit on something cos i dont want to understand it. they say u know ur getn old when u start to sound like ur parents, can i assume ur parents told you ur music was shit, no doubt they did. enjoy the 70's mate, say hi to elvis and eddie and try not to worry about the future of music its in safe hands.
thesunsettree 4 years ago
I went back and read his post, he never bashed Rabbitt, he just said there are other good songwriters and musicians.
Nothing wrong with that. He is not bashing or belitting anyone for their fondness of Eddie Rabbitt, he actually admitted he was a good/great songwriter/singer. He was just saying there are good/great modern musicians too and to keep an open mind.
Lets keep the peace.

I will never forget him.

...One of my favorite songs sung by Elvis, written by the late Mr.
SHELBYTWO 4 years ago 2
Elvis helped some future country powerhouses to their big starts! Eddie Rabbitt with this song & also "Patch It Up"... And by hiring Ronnie Milsap for his New Year's Eve parties in the early 1970's...
Milsap in fact loved "Kentucky Rain" and wanted something similar to describe his homeland... In time, he would have a hit with "Smoky Mountain Rain"...
