@watchthesetens And yet you'll be here every single freaking day. Outwardly, you'll call it ignorant, but inside, it's like crack to you, you can't get enough, you already want more and more because you're addicted to it.
And I'm not sure where I'm ignorant at all. I don't like the songs per se, I don't consider them great songs, and I'm entitled to my opinions. She's style over substance, fine. Sounds to me like you're rather intolerant, and anyone who differs, you start calling names.
Let me say it again, bold and without waver. I question Carey's prowess as a songwriter and believe she proves it is possible to overwhelm bad songwriting with world-class production, a beautiful voice, and a sexy image. I will never say Carey is a crappy singer , she deserves every accolade that comes her way. But she is what she is.
Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one. This is mine. Continue to fill my email with your own bad takes if you wish.
Allow me to continue to blow your mind Paul McCartney got 50% of the credit for John Lennon songs like COME TOGETHER and ACROSS THE UNIVERSE when everyone knows he didn't have a damn thing to do with them, and that's because they two writers were bound to the Lennon-McCartney contract. John got the same credit for Paul songs like LET IT BE and HEY JUDE. The point: getting credit doesn't mean you actually wrote a damn song.
@watchthesetens I don't think you can read, I've called Miss Carey a wonderful singer and a beautiful woman, that doesn't sound like hate. A breath-taking voice and world-class production was her path to a ton of #1's, not her songwriting talents.
And I seriously question how much she wrote, if at all. Elvis Presley got songwriting credit for several songs in the 50's, and he didn't write a single word or play a single note. Another terrific singer who is who he is.
She was so great when all she did was sing, wasn't she? Not songwriting, not acting, not boobjobs or magazine covers, not hip hop. Just go back to 1991, give her a simple song to croon to, and you could put her alongside Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, or any other great female singer of the 20th century.
@ThickChick50 Carey was as legitimate a song writer as was Elvis Presley.
And no one ever accused her of being a GOOD song writer at that. Sit down and analyze the song "Hero", and cont how many true rhymes there are in it. I can tell you, there's ONE, and she rhymed AWAY with THE WAY.
Carey was a phenom because of her incredible voice and terrific production. There's no need to make her into something she never was.
@Russebby I think there are some people in the universe who appreciate lyrics without sticking their noses up in the air. Mariah's lyrics are 50% of her magic. There's a reason her performances go deeper for some listeners...because she's singing them from her heart, not some overtly analytical brain.
And rhyming does not equate great lyrics. Great lyrics are what punctures your soul. And at 200 million records sold worldwide, I'd say her lyrics & music combined pack a serious punch.
@JacobFlores2 Nope. Not buying that argument. Mariah Carey in the early 1990's could have sung the Z section of the phone book and it would have gone to #1. If she had decided to cover Hickory Dickory Dock in 1991, it would have topped the charts.
Don't mistake worldclass production for decent songwriting. And don't make Miss Carey into something she isn't. Great singer, beautiful woman, but I gack at the idea of her as a songwriter.

@Russebby Not song writing? She wrote/writes most if not all of her songs even back then....
