The tsar bomba wasn't mass produced because it was so damn big it wasn't useful. It would just kill people instead of actually executing a useful objective like destroying a certain area. Hitler was close to an atomic bomb but towards the middle of the war he decided to research proven technology instead what at the time was a fission theory. Germany inspired Washington to make it's own bomb before Germany even though Germany cancelled the project way before they came close to a bomb.

Higher yield bombs have FAR FAR less effectiveness then putting 20 1MT weapons in a MIRV designed ICBM warhead, and thus essentially carpet bombing a large area, rather then wasting half the energy (which goes into the atmosphere)

Weapons grade uranium or plutonium is used to induce a nuclear chain reaction. as the tsar bomb was a hydrogen bomb, this nuclear reaction was used to induce fusion of hydrogen atoms to helium.
