I have the 02 Volvo s60 2.4t AWD. It's incredibly safe, which is a big deal to me since i'm a teenage driver and this is my first car, but it also won't go down without a fight. Thank to the turbo, when i step on it, you literally get pushed back in your seat. I'd like to race rasputinsmirnoff any day. He'd look pretty bad getting beat by a 16 year old in a Volvo.

And also BMW is partially owned by Chinese investors, if you're going to be fussy. Volvo still retains its Swedish reputation, even when the Ford Motor Company bought it. The Volvo S60 was when i was a Volvo Mechanic the best car to come into the workshop, they never went wrong much, and the components that did go wrong were never made by Volvo, Throttle Bodies, made by Magneti Marrei, and door locks by Hella,as an example,the engines and gear boxes were bullet proof, except the auto box it need a little bit of TLC, wish i could afford one as the 2litre turbo is the top road tax bracket, but what a car, it holds the 24hour british land speed record.

@johnagriffiths love my '01 manual T5. got it used at 140k for $2100 . put a few hundred $ into it, minor stuff, replaced MAF, leaky air intake, sunroof.

But god damn that electrical system has some gremlins. sunroof not auto close and not reset (before replacement too). windows auto-up but go back down mid-way (SOMETIMES), often times when using AC in the summer, the air vent randomly starts dumping in hot, humid outside air for a fun surprise and lasts till i shut the car off for a while...

i was thinking Volvo is a good car till I own S40 and S60. what a crap, you need the dealer for almost everything and guess what they are more expensive than BMW... And keep your keys safe, if you lose it Volvo asks you to tow the cart to closest dealership to give you a copy no exceptions..I am happy to stick with my old e39 BMW which is pretty much standard, cheap parts, you can get tech info everywhere. And it is faster and more balanced than any S60. If S60 is a camel, M series is a horse

I drive a 2008 Volvo S60 D5 185HP at my driving school, it's the best car I've ever driven, it has a perfect quality feel to it, but the best thing about it is the engine which delivers full torque (400NM) from 1200 rpm and up to 4000 or 5000 rpm. great car, I really want one.

The awd version was designed for snow/mud/ice conditions and was heavier than the fwd and considerably slower, hence the reason virtually every tuner goes with the fwd. They didn't handle better or understeer less. Added traction is a bonus though.

The awd 850 was low pressure turbo anyway which only produced 193 bhp not 225 bhp like the fwd 850 T5. As I said, they were designed for traction in weather purposes and not as a sports model like the fwd version. Mine's running at 280bhp anyway so it's another beast all together :)

The Best Balance I agree, I drive it every day, I have a 2002 and it works awesome, for Hi Performance I have a Jaguar V12 and for those special nigths an XJ6 S3, but the VOLVO is the daily driver.

I now realize why the police use them... the acceleration is above average for a normal saloon although it is no 0/60 quater mile car. the real power seems to kick in after 80mph when the turbo really kicks in and keeps going and going after many cars have lost there steam. I notice this several times on the motor way when various cars aproached at speed from behind and tried to catch up on the motor way

They're not the best in the world but they are great. I had one and for cross Europe trips it was great. I took mine on the Nurburgring which was a bit bizarre but amazingly still manage to pass a few other cars. It did make a hell of a racket through corners though. Must have looked ridiculous to onlookers - a gold S60 with squealing tyres. Extremely reliable things too.

The characterisic they told you shortly was the rear wheels and the suspension components turn slightly like the front tires if you wanna make a turn. It is to keep the car comfortable in any kind of lane changing or in the curves. So, it have a slightly larger turning diameter. If you don't want to be that comfortable while cornering with serious G forces buy one from the Audi, VW, etc. (front wheel driven centric chassis)

How about the reliability issue? BMW is never that reliable as the Volvo and the Mercs are just terrible when you consider them for the reliability. When you look at a Volvo, they are not doing the car that fast and performance oriented because it harms the reliability. Also, the same issue is valid for economy considerations.
