Stevens' hits were clean, but he did play to injure other players.
I couldn't believe in one interview where he said "I don't know when guys are skating with their head down". Anybody who's played hockey knows when somebody is skating with their head down.
Scott Stevens was a dirty player and has been attributed to the end of many careers. That's a good hitter though right? It's based on cheap shots and injuries caused? O wait this isn't boxing it's hockey. Stevens had no respect for any other player and would go out of his way to make a hit like this. You can see in the video he ha just come off the bench and made a beeline towards lindros and put his elbow out
Have you seen Stevens lately. The guy has dribble running down his mouth all the time and he needs someone to wipe his ass. He's pretty much brain dead, but he has all those stanly cups he can gaze at.
@jimb503 This is from Wikipedia: Stevens... After the 9/11/2001 attacks,he started a program called Scott's Kids for the families of the victims.Stevens resides in the small town of Essex Fells, New Jersey. Nothing about drooling...you must be another one of those asshole philly phaggot fans. Go fuck yourself...your mother took a shit and you were born...plop...."it's a turd...no it's a boy..."
look this was and still is a heated rivalry. to think that there wouldn't be some hard and semi dirty hits. but Lindros was the one who was dumb enough to go left to right with your head down thats bad enough but when you have Stevens on the ice you never put your head down i mean shit any hits highlight reel is full of Stevens just plastering guys so the blame for this hit is solely on Lindros's shoulders. and for all he Philly fans let me just add that the fight real you all adore is pointles
I guess I will never understand why ppl are so soft nowadays.......skate with your head up and you wont get it taken off......Scott Stevens Delivered the best most clean open ice checks in NHL history.....NHL used to be a mans game....now not so much
its beautiful watchin that loser Lindros gettin his head knocked off--would like to see those chicken shit Sedin sister faggots get their heads knocked off even worse
Intent to injure they say shoulder looks like elbow to the head. The rreataliation should not have been on Stevens but against a Devils top 3 forward. Stevens never had remorse because he never watched Elias go off on a stretcher or have Brodeur suffer a career ending injury.
Lindros had 3 concussions in the past 4 months prior to this. If you have 3 in 1 year doctors tell you to retire from sports (that's what his brother did). The great medical staff in Philly, who diagnosed a punctured lung that would have killed Lindros as injured ribs, let him to play. He was not 100% and shouldn't have been playing and everyone on the ice knew it. You're a real hero Stevens. Then you claim you never hit to injure? Headhunt all you want but don't claim innocence after.
@horseshoes100 Well, when you want to play hockey, you don't have to expect other players to treat you kindly. It's a rough sport and you must take that into consideration. If Lindros still played no matter what his injury was, he took for granted there were no excuses. There are no excuses here either; Stevens doesn't hit to injure, Lindros knew he was not 100%.
@horseshoes100 You're full of shit you seriously think Stevens intentionally tried to hurt him this badly? He was trying to take him out of the play he wasnt trying to concuss him.
@horseshoes100 Hurt or not the bottom line is Lindros comes in with his head down knowing full well Scott Stevens is on the ice. You NEVER put your head down when Stevens is on the ice. EVER.
@horseshoes100 when you're on the ice you don't think "oh look, head down crossing through the middle. Maybe ill let him do what he wants because he's a big dummy for playing with 3 prior concussions".
@horseshoes100 Perfectly legal shoulder hit. Funny how some people defend a guy like Lindros who KNEW he outweighed just about everybody and used the boards to actually hurt people. All one has to do is look at Lindros hits compilation video. Stevens was a clean, open ice shoulder hitter. Lidors was dirty to the core.
This hit exemplifies everything that is wrong with today's professional hockey. Not only does Stevens hit Lindros blind-side but he hits him with his elbow and LEANS INTO IT. Definitely an intent to injure. Let's clean up hockey and get rid of this cheap sh*t
@aronws ITS CALLED KEEPING YOUR HEAD UP.....and lindros was a cock sucker anyway so who cares, when you first start playing check hockey thats one of the first things you learn...keep your head up. and alot of open ice sholder hits look like elbows when finishing cause your arm lifts up from the follow through and if you have thrown one before id think you would know but then agian you probably have never played so please stop trying to puss-ify the greatest sport on earth.
If Stevens was such a good open ice hitter why do almost none of his hits occur on his D side of the open ice. There were 4 devils in the area at the time, how about not using the other D-man as a screen and hitting a guy one-on-one Stevens? And how about "tucking in you arm" like your'e taught to? He doesn't lead with the elbow but it's almost all arm to the head and no shoulder. He's totally going high for the head as evidenced by himself being so off balanced so often when he hits.
What does it say about a hit when Flyer fans, the meanest in hockey, salute the crushing of the defining player of a generation of their club, and call it a clean hit?
It says they know more about hockey than those morons inside Madison Square Garden!
Idiot shouldn't have crossed the middle of the ice with his head down. Would have absolutely seen that one coming if would have lifted his head up. Dirty hit? Maybe, too hard to tell. With your head the low, it's kind of hard not to hit it.
This wasn't an illegal hit at the time, so fair is fair, but I don't agree with Stevens when he said he didn't mean to hurt Lindros. Who hits someone in the head when there head is down and doesn't expect to hurt them? He'd have to be lying or really stupid to think he wouldn't hurt him. I don't think he meant to end his career, but he DID mean to hurt him.
@Sunderlanding Actually, ity loks like juts before the hit, Lindros actually bends forward and lower. You can only spot this in super slow mo. In realltime. it happens so fast that I dont think Stevens went for his head. IMHO.
@bbmtge He's gone for the head before, and besides who hits someone who isn't looking and actually thinks they won't get hurt? The point still stands. I'm not saying he's a bad player. I'm just saying his statement makes no sense. He's just trying to cover his ass.
@Sunderlanding I disagree. Stevens is lining him up and does not change his posture. Lindros bends forward and down, stretching out to hit the puck, and that last movement is when he is hit. As much as I do not like Lindros, it's sad to see a career gone as a result. But I do see your point with respect to injury. Scott knocked out a lot of people. That, in and of itself, is injury!!! I will never understand how Lindros had that very bad habit of coming into the zone with his head down.
@bbmtge Can you not read? I never said he was or wasn't targeting the head on this hit. I said he has in the past. This hit you can take it either way. That wasn't my point. My point is if you blindside someone and don't expect that they might get injured, like Stevens said in an interview, you're either lying or an idiot.
@Sunderlanding Can you not read??? As with Lindros, my example, he does NOT go for the head; in the past, also. Then, I actually agree with your point about injury. Get it???
@bbmtge There are plenty of hits to the head by Stevens. Just type "Stevens Hits" or something to that effect in YouTube and you'll see he targets the head quite a lot.
Stevens shoulder can't make contact to anything but Lindros neck and head, because he comes from almost a 90 deg ange towards Lindros. It's also *very* clear he has the intention to hit the head, and not go for the side of Eric. How refs don't call this - or the league not penalize this - is beyond me. Unbelievable.
@4JRimmer In my opinion, back before all the Rule 48 and "Hits to the Head" ordeal the NHL was built for hits like this. We all know what Scott Stevens was about, he's a solid D-man who loves to play the body. For someone to say he "clearly" went for his head is nonsense, but I value your opinion. Who knows maybe he did, but only he knows that. Yes, an unfortunate hit but players have been taught since Peewee's to keep their head up. Why stop when you make it to the show?
Ok, get this straight. this is a hit coming from an "dead angle" with the *intent* to injure. And also its recipient is a player who has already sustained several injuries to his head. How can you cheer such a cowardly rotten act?
I would have processed Stevens in civil court for this hit.
as a flyers fan and devil hater, this was unfortunate. stevens led with the shoulder and lindros had his head down, clean but devastating hit. not unlike the richards hit on booth a few years back.
I am a Flyers fan, always have been, this hit was 100% clean, Lindros had a bad habit of keeping his head down, and will soon be wearing a diaper because of it.
@Corvus133 I don't know how to respond to that because I'm even not sure what your saying, are you saying Lindros can score better (good English by the way) so he was a better player than Stevens ? I agree
@Corvus133 Ya I know nothing about hockey, and I can tell by how you talk your 12 or 14 years old at most, so you probably never saw either of these guys play, and dont know what your talking about What comment do you think you read from me saying Lindros scored more so he was better?
Never mentioned those words, I think your confused, he was better though thats why he won the Hart and the Pearson, how many of those did Stevens win?
@BigPlumpGuidos Ya ending one of the best players in the games careers is a great thing. Just like he effectively did to Kariya, thats great for the game, thats probably why the NHL is trying desperately to get rid of players like Stevens.
@SoloAxe Let's see if you can qualify your coment. Who, and how, is the NHL TRYING to get rid of certain players? Desperately, too. As always, you make no sense. Merely more crap rhetoric.
@SoloAxe Yeah Stevens sure did. He gets to think about all those Stanley Cup he won with the Devils versus all the cups lindros won...oops my bad Lindros didnt win shit...WAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LMFAO> Get a life loser.
@SoloAxe Funny comment. Scott Stevens, while not an accomplished fighter never backed down from anybody. And...no fighter ever hurt him. All you sad sacks that love Lindros can do is make stupid comments. Philly mortgaged their future and what did he do? He never showed up in the playoffs and Quebec/Colorado built a Cup winning franchise by ridding themselves of him.
@bbmtge Your right he never backed down from anyone, he caught a lot of guys with his shoulder to their head and shortened a lot of good players careers, he was really good for the game. I guess that's why the NHL is really likes these kinds of hits and players like Stevens. It's really tough catching a guys head when hes not looking, then when he fights you face to face you grab on like a coward.
@SoloAxe If you actually WATCH video of Stevens hits, they are legal body checks. The legal body check has not been gotten rid of. Iguess you should try to use the so-called logic of your last sentence and apply it to Lindros. All you have to do is watch his hits compilation video. Cross-rink boarding while driving an opponents head into the glas, using the boards and his size as deliberate attempts to injure, grabbing the golaie's face mask while skating by at speed, elbows galore.
@bbmtge The only two hits from Stevens I can think of are the Lindros and Kariya hits and both would definitively be deemed hits to the head by today's standards and the Kariya one was way late too. If you don't think so your confused as to what the are calling in the game today. Bottom line the NHL wants to stop people from permanently injuring guys with head shots, which is what Stevens was known for.
@SoloAxe I see you are attempting to change your tune to a degree however, in the end you cant help yourself. Steven was known as an open-ice body checker. He was not known as a head-shot player. All one has to do is watch video. As stated, Lindors compilation video shows a player deliberately trying to hurt people, especially with the boards and ice. Try as you might, you somply cant win because you deny the facts.
Lindros should never have been in that game. He was still getting over a previous concussion a couple of weeks prior. He should have been benched for the rest of the season. Blame the Flyer organization for that one. They hung him out to dry.
It's funny how everybody is saying "oh keep your head up"
Why when a flyer does something like this (Richards hit on Booth) it's called dirty?
I'm not calling this hit dirty, but it's annoying seeing how everybody says Lindros should have kept his head up, but for Booth, it's because Richards is dirty.
I suspect the people bitching are too young to really remember the pre-lockout NHL. When these hits used to happen people would just say "damn that was good hit, guy should of had his head up."
Nobody should be bitching about "headshot type hits" it's pure BS. I don't consider you a true hockey guy if you complain about hits like this. Keep your damn head up and you don't get rocked like this, it's that simple, and it's what we were all taught growing up.
you/re all douche bags LINDROS Crushed stevens1000 times before that lead up to that ELBOW that is why stevens ELBOW was in the air if you hit someone with your shoulder your ELBOW stays down?
all you people complaining about him not playing for the team he was drafted to, would you want to play for an eastern canadian team? i thought so... he had the balls to say something and not play in misery for however long
Lindros owned. A prime example of an incompetent Philadelphia hockey player. Chicago has Toews, the Rangers had Messier, even Pittsburgh had a Mario Lemieux. The Flyers never had that. Lindros could have been great, but Stevens singlehandedly decided that he had different plans for him by destroying his career with this very hit. Lindros was never the same after this, check stats. But that's the Flyers. Never were, never will be.
ok man we get it it was a clean hit but you all sit there and act like if elias or parise nowadays got crsuhed and had their careers ended that u wudnt complain at all... you all know you would bitch and moan just like the people you make fun of now
Scott Stevens was the strongest defenseman that didn't take shit from no one. I remember that big hit in the playoffs he put on Lindros. That almost ended Lindros career. I am sure that taught Lindros a lesson to never put his head down skating on the ice. They called Scott Stevens the rock cause he was so strong. I miss old hockey which old hockey was so much better than today. Especially when Gary Thorne use to broadcast NHL games on ESPN. Today their new network sucks Versus makes me sleepy.
@mkreku It isn't necessarily targeting the head that is illegal according to rule 48, it is where the hitter is come from on to the player that takes the head shot. This was clean then and it is clean now, it was from in front, not from behind or laterally. It is unfortunate that this hit collided, pardon the pun, with his highly anticipated career, but for "such a great player" he should know not to have his head down while entering the offensive zone.
Rockdude87....You obviously never played real hockey or any hockety at all. Hight doesnt factor into cheap hits. I Played high level, high school and collegiate hockey in MN i am also 6 5' 230. See my penalty minutes. ALL elnowing, all condsidered cheap. They dont care about height at all. I do agree with..dont put your fn head down...ever!
I hate Lindros for his whiny, bitchy ways.. He was a total douchebag who had no respect for the game or himself. When the Flyers were about to be swept by the Red Wings in the Cup Finals, I was outside the Joe waiting for players to arrive. Lindros gets out, and I yelled out, "YOU SHOULDA STAYED IN QUEBEC YA AHOLE! YA MIGHT OF WON SOMETHING!!!" He didnt like it to much, but it was a small satisfying jab from a fan who respects to the game to a major Ahole who shit on it.
Stevens would be looked at as a cheap shot in the NHL now. Don't get me wrong I loved him but its sad the league has gone from a mans sport to closer to soccer in the recent years.
@NDfan1992 no he wouldn't. His shit is clean. Only stupid fucks who don't know the game would say his hits are a cheap shot. There is no respected hockey announcer, analyst, writer etc that would call him dirty. He has simply mastered the hit. Knows what to look for. In this case, the big fucking idiot trying to out skate 3 devils. He should of known Stevens was on the ice...... But then again, being an idiot with his head that far down, i'm not sure he knew wtf he was doing. DUMP AND CHASE.
People can bitch all they want about Stevens being dirty in this hit but get this straight if you will. Lindros was MUCH taller than Stevens. For Eric's head to be THAT FAR down for Stevens to pop him with his shoulder, there's just no excuse anyone can make. You just can't cross the middle with your head down, even if you're as tall as Lindros.
@ripousse I was referring to when players cross the ice with their heads down. I didn't mean to imply it was "ALWAYS" the excuse, but I understand your point believe me. I don't think the Chara incident was intentionally dirty but I understand why they made it a five minute major and a game misconduct. You have to be careful around that turnbuckle. I have had personal experience where a player ended up hitting the turnbuckle and had serious injury.
@ripousse My point with Lindros was that he's a MUCH taller man than Stevens so in order for his head to make contact w/ Stevens' shoulder his head had to be VERY far down, which it was. So when people complain it was dirty well lesson learned even BIG men like Lindros should never cross the center ice with their head down. Every hockey coach I EVER had when teaching about stick handling taught us to stick handle with our head up to see the ice. And when asked "why" the Lindros incident came up.
@ripousse You mean Pacioretty, right? I think it was useless (he didn't have the puck), disgusting (Max is only 22 years old and like half his weight) and dangerous as fuck (he could have been paralyzed for life or worst, dead). I don't want the NHL to make fights illegal... But damn it, players that do such things should stop playing for the rest of the season, at least... Basicaly: punish the player, not the fucking game, you peace loving sissies.
@rockndude87 - Exactly & if you see Lindros over his career this happened multiple x's with him having his head down! The Kasparitis hit was same thing!
@BroadStreetHockey18 So you think hitting a guy who is coming toward you head on a blindside hit? Please...Stevens hit with intent to defend his defensive zone. And dude, it's fucking hockey...not a sport meant for pussies. If you're going to cross the ice with your head down then no one should show pity for you.
@rockndude87 lindros- skating towards the goal, stevens: skating along the blue line. coming towards him head on? i think not. and theyre are other ways to hit someone than with an elbow to the head, such as shoulder to shoulder, or any body hit at all. but anyway. have fun rooting for the devils and getting surprised if they win more than 30 games
@BroadStreetHockey18 Number One: It's not a blindside hit from behind or the side, when you're skating across the blue line to the other wing with your head down. It's putting yourself in a dangerous situation to continue into the zone. The head should be up! Number Two: Your understanding of human anatomy sucks. It was all shoulder until the elbow came up AFTER the initial contact. Stop whining about an elbow. Number Three: I'm not even a Devils fan. Congrats for making three wrong assumptions.
@BroadStreetHockey18 Plus a defenseman's primary job is to put pressure on the attack. During their good years the Devils were notorious for applying pressure high at the blueline. That system didn't just go well for them, it won them a few Stanley Cups. And this is hockey dude, it's not a sport made for pussies. Yet you have the avatar name of "Broad Street Hockey" probably in reference to the glory days of the Flyers who were a VERY dirty team, fun to watch nonetheless. So stop bitching...
@rockndude87 i agree with what you said, trust me i love physical games of hockey, but im not the one who was complaining about anything, i was just saying that his height isnt an excuse and it wasnt a completely head on hit. not that it should have been called, it was fairly clean, but it had intent to hurt (like 90% of hits,so not a complaint) and i was just pointing out that he wasnt doing an angelic service to his team with an innocent game saving hit. just a shame big Es career ended early
@BroadStreetHockey18 Sorry to be an ass to you. But I will just say these men make a living playing one of the most physical games in the world. They put their bodies on the line daily, and I don't like seeing people get hurt or anything but it is what it is. It wasn't like Lindros was a saint in the game, he was a brutal and ferocious hitter which made him a great, respected, and feared competitor. I think players like Stevens feel the adrenaline of the moment and want to make the big hit.
@rockndude87 yeah no its cool. i probably seemed ignorant, from behind a computer screen, because all you see is what i type, no tone or anything. its understandable. i was just pointing out that its a legal hit, but clean wouldnt be the best describtion. not saying it was a matt cooke dirty hit, but, like many, was meant to hurt to some extent, not end a career, but yeah i respect the physical game and anyone that can play it without being a scumbag
@BroadStreetHockey18 Men can always reach agreement. Not sure IF you are a Philly fan but I do love going to Philadelphia, it's a great city with a lot of great history and diehard sport fans. Sometime soon the Flyers will lift the cup again.
@rockndude87 yes i am a philly fan, and do live there, i assume you are a devils fan. the devils are the only other team in the Atlantic division that i respect. they have a similar play style to Philly, and Boston. teams with depth are are always better than teams with 2 or 3 stars and a bunch of nobodies. What the devils did during the second half of the season actually had me worried for a while during that streak they had, they seemed unstoppable.
The entire initial contact is with the shoulder. The elbow comes up because of the motion put into the hit. Also, check your understanding of basic human anatomy, the elbow is just over a foot below the shoulder. By the time the elbow came up it was not on Lindros' head but rather a foot or two away from it. I think these comments against Stevens come up lately because of the newer rules to the head. Back in the 2000 era that was okay so this was acceptable then. Not acceptable now.
To answer your question more definitively I wouldn't call it acceptable either today or back in 2000 but it was okay to do this IN THIS TIME PERIOD. Watch the video in slower mode. Lindros came across middle ice with his head down low enough to be at Stevens' shoulder (that's a very big significance), the elbow comes up after the hit, but it was not near/on Lindros head. It's understandable why a physical defensemen like Stevens' went for the hit. It's not like Lindros was a saint either...
@rockndude87 Stevens was a hell of a player and wish there were more like him now.. but that was dirty.. you cant tell from this angle but that was a solid elbow. but what the hell, like you said, if your heads that far down.. watch out
@rockndude87 sorry bud, if going for a hit, and his head is in the way of the body, you don't go for the hit. plain and simple, he could of played the puck, or kept with him. but to say he got hit in the head because his head was down is a cheap excuse. I hate how people believe that scottstevens is this innocent brute. no talent, was just there to take out the best player for good. its unfortunate to let a menace go around and take out the skilled players of the game.
@cantouchtoes Oh yeah? No talent? Take a look at his career stats. Read what opponents, coaches, and team mates say about him. And Lindros is no saint...it's not like his an "innocent brute" either by your terms. This is all becoming a much more talked about issue because of the league's recent paranoia regarding concussions. Not that I don't support their concern/protection of players but back in 2000 this was a hell of a hit. If you're crossing the ice head down you're fucked, plain and simple
I'd say the hit was probably clean....but not sure it an honest hit by hockey player standards. Stevens made a career out of the blind, suicide hits on people with their head down.
@quadtran that was the game then. Clutch, grab, head hits its only worse now because they don't have the prior two (thus more speed, plus hard plastic equipment)
@PrayforPlagueshXc13 good point. I was more painting the picture of the hit that results from a "suicide pass"...the kind where you're looking back for the pass and you don't see the defenseman who ends up destroying you. Stevens' devastating hits were the ones his victims never saw coming...."suicide pass" type hits. Hope that helps.
@quadtran I knew what you meant, but for some reason I felt like being an ass. Glad you didn't take it personally. I completely agree with what you are saying, though.
I've seen this hit from all the possible angles that are available. Shoulder made the first contact so by the rules of that time this is considered as a clean hit. In today's NHL it might have been called as a hit to the head and maybe penalized but that's another thing.
Too bad it practically ended Lindros career, he was one of the best and deserves to be in the HHOF as much as Stevens does.
@Thefrizzwhizz Scott Stevens played 1,635 games in his career. He had a total of four elbowing penalties during that time. Elbow always up, though? Right.
@Thefrizzwhizz If Scott Stevens had fewer elbowing penalties than Eric Lindros had concussions, but you still think it was the refs not calling anything, then you're grasping for straws.
@Thefrizzwhizz lol excuses, all life is for a philadelphia sports fan is a lame excuse and all they can do is hate on other teams cuz their teams suck and choke all the time
@Thefrizzwhizz dirty? only lindros himself said it was clean, the league said it was clean, the officals said it was clean, the experts and commentators said it was clean, the league used it as an example of a clean hit when explaining the new nhl headshot rule. arguement over clean hit
Clean hit?
You must be fucking joke.

@horseshoes100 You're full of shit you seriously think Stevens intentionally tried to hurt him this badly? He was trying to take him out of the play he wasnt trying to concuss him.
danynumero6 1 month ago
@horseshoes100 Hurt or not the bottom line is Lindros comes in with his head down knowing full well Scott Stevens is on the ice. You NEVER put your head down when Stevens is on the ice. EVER.
CyrustheVirus1234 1 month ago
@horseshoes100 when you're on the ice you don't think "oh look, head down crossing through the middle. Maybe ill let him do what he wants because he's a big dummy for playing with 3 prior concussions".

@horseshoes100 Perfectly legal shoulder hit. Funny how some people defend a guy like Lindros who KNEW he outweighed just about everybody and used the boards to actually hurt people. All one has to do is look at Lindros hits compilation video. Stevens was a clean, open ice shoulder hitter. Lidors was dirty to the core.

Wonder how Stevens hits would go up against Brendan Shanahan's rulings in todays game?
rickcrouch 3 months ago
@rickcrouch Shanahan himself said most Stevens hit were clean except the one on Karyia
max432156 2 months ago
This hit exemplifies everything that is wrong with today's professional hockey. Not only does Stevens hit Lindros blind-side but he hits him with his elbow and LEANS INTO IT. Definitely an intent to injure. Let's clean up hockey and get rid of this cheap sh*t
aronws 3 months ago

@horseshoes100 Grab a tissue and wipe your tears, son. One of Scott's countless LEGAL devastating hits...

What does it say about a hit when Flyer fans, the meanest in hockey, salute the crushing of the defining player of a generation of their club, and call it a clean hit?
It says they know more about hockey than those morons inside Madison Square Garden!

krhprodctionz 6 months ago
This wasn't an illegal hit at the time, so fair is fair, but I don't agree with Stevens when he said he didn't mean to hurt Lindros. Who hits someone in the head when there head is down and doesn't expect to hurt them? He'd have to be lying or really stupid to think he wouldn't hurt him. I don't think he meant to end his career, but he DID mean to hurt him.
Sunderlanding 6 months ago
@Sunderlanding Actually, ity loks like juts before the hit, Lindros actually bends forward and lower. You can only spot this in super slow mo. In realltime. it happens so fast that I dont think Stevens went for his head. IMHO.
bbmtge 6 months ago
@bbmtge He's gone for the head before, and besides who hits someone who isn't looking and actually thinks they won't get hurt? The point still stands. I'm not saying he's a bad player. I'm just saying his statement makes no sense. He's just trying to cover his ass.
Sunderlanding 6 months ago
@Sunderlanding I disagree. Stevens is lining him up and does not change his posture. Lindros bends forward and down, stretching out to hit the puck, and that last movement is when he is hit. As much as I do not like Lindros, it's sad to see a career gone as a result. But I do see your point with respect to injury. Scott knocked out a lot of people. That, in and of itself, is injury!!! I will never understand how Lindros had that very bad habit of coming into the zone with his head down.
bbmtge 6 months ago
@bbmtge Can you not read? I never said he was or wasn't targeting the head on this hit. I said he has in the past. This hit you can take it either way. That wasn't my point. My point is if you blindside someone and don't expect that they might get injured, like Stevens said in an interview, you're either lying or an idiot.
Sunderlanding 6 months ago
@Sunderlanding Can you not read??? As with Lindros, my example, he does NOT go for the head; in the past, also. Then, I actually agree with your point about injury. Get it???
bbmtge 6 months ago
@bbmtge There are plenty of hits to the head by Stevens. Just type "Stevens Hits" or something to that effect in YouTube and you'll see he targets the head quite a lot.
Sunderlanding 6 months ago
Stevens shoulder can't make contact to anything but Lindros neck and head, because he comes from almost a 90 deg ange towards Lindros. It's also *very* clear he has the intention to hit the head, and not go for the side of Eric. How refs don't call this - or the league not penalize this - is beyond me. Unbelievable.
4JRimmer 6 months ago
@4JRimmer In my opinion, back before all the Rule 48 and "Hits to the Head" ordeal the NHL was built for hits like this. We all know what Scott Stevens was about, he's a solid D-man who loves to play the body. For someone to say he "clearly" went for his head is nonsense, but I value your opinion. Who knows maybe he did, but only he knows that. Yes, an unfortunate hit but players have been taught since Peewee's to keep their head up. Why stop when you make it to the show?
cjklaric 6 months ago
Ok, get this straight. this is a hit coming from an "dead angle" with the *intent* to injure. And also its recipient is a player who has already sustained several injuries to his head. How can you cheer such a cowardly rotten act?
I would have processed Stevens in civil court for this hit.

SoloAxe 7 months ago 6
@SoloAxe yeah, then they should watch this video again. Guess who got the last laugh?
MrCanadashistory 2 months ago
@SoloAxe Ya, let's analyze that - Fighting = really no point
Checking = part of the game that constantly occurs.
You might as well say "Lindross can score better" - who cares, you just compared a body check to fighting - fail.
Corvus133 2 months ago
@Corvus133 I don't know how to respond to that because I'm even not sure what your saying, are you saying Lindros can score better (good English by the way) so he was a better player than Stevens ? I agree
SoloAxe 2 months ago
@SoloAxe Ya that's because you know nothing about hockey outside of "duuhhh goals are fun."
You're (sarcastic) right. Lindross with his 0 stanley cups compared to Stevens multiple cups, Lindross was better.
Even more stupid comparing a goal scorer to a defensemen who stops goals. Might as well say the goalie sucks more because Lindross scored more goals.
Corvus133 2 months ago
@Corvus133 Ya I know nothing about hockey, and I can tell by how you talk your 12 or 14 years old at most, so you probably never saw either of these guys play, and dont know what your talking about What comment do you think you read from me saying Lindros scored more so he was better?
Never mentioned those words, I think your confused, he was better though thats why he won the Hart and the Pearson, how many of those did Stevens win?
SoloAxe 2 months ago
@SoloAxe We should? That's weird because that happened before this. So who won? I'm guessing Stevens did considering this ended Lindros' career.
BigPlumpGuidos 1 month ago
@BigPlumpGuidos Ya ending one of the best players in the games careers is a great thing. Just like he effectively did to Kariya, thats great for the game, thats probably why the NHL is trying desperately to get rid of players like Stevens.
SoloAxe 2 weeks ago
@SoloAxe Let's see if you can qualify your coment. Who, and how, is the NHL TRYING to get rid of certain players? Desperately, too. As always, you make no sense. Merely more crap rhetoric.

bbmtge 2 weeks ago
@SoloAxe Funny comment. Scott Stevens, while not an accomplished fighter never backed down from anybody. And...no fighter ever hurt him. All you sad sacks that love Lindros can do is make stupid comments. Philly mortgaged their future and what did he do? He never showed up in the playoffs and Quebec/Colorado built a Cup winning franchise by ridding themselves of him.
bbmtge 2 weeks ago
@bbmtge Your right he never backed down from anyone, he caught a lot of guys with his shoulder to their head and shortened a lot of good players careers, he was really good for the game. I guess that's why the NHL is really likes these kinds of hits and players like Stevens. It's really tough catching a guys head when hes not looking, then when he fights you face to face you grab on like a coward.
SoloAxe 2 weeks ago
@SoloAxe If you actually WATCH video of Stevens hits, they are legal body checks. The legal body check has not been gotten rid of. Iguess you should try to use the so-called logic of your last sentence and apply it to Lindros. All you have to do is watch his hits compilation video. Cross-rink boarding while driving an opponents head into the glas, using the boards and his size as deliberate attempts to injure, grabbing the golaie's face mask while skating by at speed, elbows galore.
bbmtge 2 weeks ago
@bbmtge The only two hits from Stevens I can think of are the Lindros and Kariya hits and both would definitively be deemed hits to the head by today's standards and the Kariya one was way late too. If you don't think so your confused as to what the are calling in the game today. Bottom line the NHL wants to stop people from permanently injuring guys with head shots, which is what Stevens was known for.
SoloAxe 2 weeks ago

It was clearly a clean hit.

Today their new network sucks Versus makes me sleepy.
tonebeatz24 9 months ago
Nowadays it IS a dirty hit, since Stevens always targeted the head.
mkreku 9 months ago
@mkreku It isn't necessarily targeting the head that is illegal according to rule 48, it is where the hitter is come from on to the player that takes the head shot. This was clean then and it is clean now, it was from in front, not from behind or laterally. It is unfortunate that this hit collided, pardon the pun, with his highly anticipated career, but for "such a great player" he should know not to have his head down while entering the offensive zone.

People can bitch all they want about Stevens being dirty in this hit but get this straight if you will. Lindros was MUCH taller than Stevens. For Eric's head to be THAT FAR down for Stevens to pop him with his shoulder, there's just no excuse anyone can make. You just can't cross the middle with your head down, even if you're as tall as Lindros.
rockndude87 10 months ago 19
@rockndude87
Doesn't it seem like the head down thing is ALWAYS the excuse ?
What do you think about the Pacharetti - Chara incident ?
ripousse 10 months ago
@ripousse I was referring to when players cross the ice with their heads down. I didn't mean to imply it was "ALWAYS" the excuse, but I understand your point believe me. I don't think the Chara incident was intentionally dirty but I understand why they made it a five minute major and a game misconduct. You have to be careful around that turnbuckle. I have had personal experience where a player ended up hitting the turnbuckle and had serious injury.
rockndude87 10 months ago
@ripousse My point with Lindros was that he's a MUCH taller man than Stevens so in order for his head to make contact w/ Stevens' shoulder his head had to be VERY far down, which it was. So when people complain it was dirty well lesson learned even BIG men like Lindros should never cross the center ice with their head down. Every hockey coach I EVER had when teaching about stick handling taught us to stick handle with our head up to see the ice. And when asked "why" the Lindros incident came up.
rockndude87 10 months ago
@ripousse You mean Pacioretty, right? I think it was useless (he didn't have the puck), disgusting (Max is only 22 years old and like half his weight) and dangerous as fuck (he could have been paralyzed for life or worst, dead). I don't want the NHL to make fights illegal... But damn it, players that do such things should stop playing for the rest of the season, at least... Basicaly: punish the player, not the fucking game, you peace loving sissies.
OopsYouFailed 10 months ago
@rockndude87 - Exactly & if you see Lindros over his career this happened multiple x's with him having his head down! The Kasparitis hit was same thing!
MrREDHEAT22 9 months ago
@rockndude87 so its ok to blindside him, with intent to injure, because of his height?
BroadStreetHockey18 8 months ago
@BroadStreetHockey18 So you think hitting a guy who is coming toward you head on a blindside hit? Please...Stevens hit with intent to defend his defensive zone. And dude, it's fucking hockey...not a sport meant for pussies. If you're going to cross the ice with your head down then no one should show pity for you.
rockndude87 8 months ago
@rockndude87 lindros- skating towards the goal, stevens: skating along the blue line. coming towards him head on? i think not. and theyre are other ways to hit someone than with an elbow to the head, such as shoulder to shoulder, or any body hit at all. but anyway. have fun rooting for the devils and getting surprised if they win more than 30 games
BroadStreetHockey18 8 months ago
@BroadStreetHockey18 Number One: It's not a blindside hit from behind or the side, when you're skating across the blue line to the other wing with your head down. It's putting yourself in a dangerous situation to continue into the zone. The head should be up! Number Two: Your understanding of human anatomy sucks. It was all shoulder until the elbow came up AFTER the initial contact. Stop whining about an elbow. Number Three: I'm not even a Devils fan. Congrats for making three wrong assumptions.
rockndude87 8 months ago
@BroadStreetHockey18 Plus a defenseman's primary job is to put pressure on the attack. During their good years the Devils were notorious for applying pressure high at the blueline. That system didn't just go well for them, it won them a few Stanley Cups. And this is hockey dude, it's not a sport made for pussies. Yet you have the avatar name of "Broad Street Hockey" probably in reference to the glory days of the Flyers who were a VERY dirty team, fun to watch nonetheless. So stop bitching...
rockndude87 8 months ago
@rockndude87 i agree with what you said, trust me i love physical games of hockey, but im not the one who was complaining about anything, i was just saying that his height isnt an excuse and it wasnt a completely head on hit. not that it should have been called, it was fairly clean, but it had intent to hurt (like 90% of hits,so not a complaint) and i was just pointing out that he wasnt doing an angelic service to his team with an innocent game saving hit. just a shame big Es career ended early
BroadStreetHockey18 8 months ago
@BroadStreetHockey18 Sorry to be an ass to you. But I will just say these men make a living playing one of the most physical games in the world. They put their bodies on the line daily, and I don't like seeing people get hurt or anything but it is what it is. It wasn't like Lindros was a saint in the game, he was a brutal and ferocious hitter which made him a great, respected, and feared competitor. I think players like Stevens feel the adrenaline of the moment and want to make the big hit.
rockndude87 8 months ago
@rockndude87 yeah no its cool. i probably seemed ignorant, from behind a computer screen, because all you see is what i type, no tone or anything. its understandable. i was just pointing out that its a legal hit, but clean wouldnt be the best describtion. not saying it was a matt cooke dirty hit, but, like many, was meant to hurt to some extent, not end a career, but yeah i respect the physical game and anyone that can play it without being a scumbag
BroadStreetHockey18 8 months ago
@BroadStreetHockey18 Men can always reach agreement. Not sure IF you are a Philly fan but I do love going to Philadelphia, it's a great city with a lot of great history and diehard sport fans. Sometime soon the Flyers will lift the cup again.
rockndude87 8 months ago
@rockndude87 yes i am a philly fan, and do live there, i assume you are a devils fan. the devils are the only other team in the Atlantic division that i respect. they have a similar play style to Philly, and Boston. teams with depth are are always better than teams with 2 or 3 stars and a bunch of nobodies. What the devils did during the second half of the season actually had me worried for a while during that streak they had, they seemed unstoppable.
BroadStreetHockey18 8 months ago
@rockndude87 umm, he clearly followed through with his fucking elbow. if you think that is acceptable then seriously fuck you
Hess015 7 months ago
The entire initial contact is with the shoulder. The elbow comes up because of the motion put into the hit. Also, check your understanding of basic human anatomy, the elbow is just over a foot below the shoulder. By the time the elbow came up it was not on Lindros' head but rather a foot or two away from it. I think these comments against Stevens come up lately because of the newer rules to the head. Back in the 2000 era that was okay so this was acceptable then. Not acceptable now.
rockndude87 7 months ago
To answer your question more definitively I wouldn't call it acceptable either today or back in 2000 but it was okay to do this IN THIS TIME PERIOD. Watch the video in slower mode. Lindros came across middle ice with his head down low enough to be at Stevens' shoulder (that's a very big significance), the elbow comes up after the hit, but it was not near/on Lindros head. It's understandable why a physical defensemen like Stevens' went for the hit. It's not like Lindros was a saint either...
rockndude87 7 months ago
@rockndude87 Stevens was a hell of a player and wish there were more like him now.. but that was dirty.. you cant tell from this angle but that was a solid elbow. but what the hell, like you said, if your heads that far down.. watch out
FlyersFan722 6 months ago
@rockndude87 sorry bud, if going for a hit, and his head is in the way of the body, you don't go for the hit. plain and simple, he could of played the puck, or kept with him. but to say he got hit in the head because his head was down is a cheap excuse. I hate how people believe that scottstevens is this innocent brute. no talent, was just there to take out the best player for good. its unfortunate to let a menace go around and take out the skilled players of the game.
cantouchtoes 5 months ago
@cantouchtoes Oh yeah? No talent? Take a look at his career stats. Read what opponents, coaches, and team mates say about him. And Lindros is no saint...it's not like his an "innocent brute" either by your terms. This is all becoming a much more talked about issue because of the league's recent paranoia regarding concussions. Not that I don't support their concern/protection of players but back in 2000 this was a hell of a hit. If you're crossing the ice head down you're fucked, plain and simple
rockndude87 5 months ago
maybe the fag should have had his helmet on properly, his head would not have bounced off the ice like a rock

@quadtran that was the game then. Clutch, grab, head hits its only worse now because they don't have the prior two (thus more speed, plus hard plastic equipment)
skydome29 10 months ago
@quadtran I think you need to look up the definition of the word "suicide".
PrayforPlagueshXc13 10 months ago
@PrayforPlagueshXc13 good point. I was more painting the picture of the hit that results from a "suicide pass"...the kind where you're looking back for the pass and you don't see the defenseman who ends up destroying you. Stevens' devastating hits were the ones his victims never saw coming...."suicide pass" type hits. Hope that helps.

@quadtran I knew what you meant, but for some reason I felt like being an ass. Glad you didn't take it personally. I completely agree with what you are saying, though.

One of the greatest moments in NHL history seeing this ego maniac get what he deserved. SCREW YOU LINDROS

Mr. Clean approves this hit.

Ha , Ha , Take that spoiled brat outta the league.

Stevens and Lindros always went at it over the years. Stevens had the last laugh

Scott Stevens came to eat in south jersey one time. I elbowed the fuck out of him and wrote 88 on his face.

@Sani9119 I so badly wish you were serious.

It wasn't the hit as much as it was his head exploding off the ice.
Look at his hit snap to the ice at 0:18

@Krunch907 scott stevens is a dirty player that always has his elbow up cuz hes a pussy
Thefrizzwhizz 11 months ago
@Thefrizzwhizz Scott Stevens played 1,635 games in his career. He had a total of four elbowing penalties during that time. Elbow always up, though? Right.
therealkubo 11 months ago
@therealkubo ya but he would have got more but the reffs never called didly shit
Thefrizzwhizz 11 months ago
@Thefrizzwhizz If Scott Stevens had fewer elbowing penalties than Eric Lindros had concussions, but you still think it was the refs not calling anything, then you're grasping for straws.
therealkubo 11 months ago
@therealkubo listen i hate both players but im pointing out in this vid his elbow is up
Thefrizzwhizz 11 months ago

Thefrizzwhizz 11 months ago
@Thefrizzwhizz dirty? only lindros himself said it was clean, the league said it was clean, the officals said it was clean, the experts and commentators said it was clean, the league used it as an example of a clean hit when explaining the new nhl headshot rule. arguement over clean hit
