  • His version of Monteverdi's "Eri Gia Tutta Mia" is definitive.

  • How this carries me back! I remember the Renaissance and Medieval songs he recorded way back in the early sixties. They were part of my "Early Music lifeline" back then. He lived to be 108, how Swiss!

  • @JoelvanLennep Yes, he could probably almost remember the Middle Ages:) :)

  • I first met Hugues Cuenod just 50 years ago. He was ancient [to me] already [I've got to admit, I was a bit younger in those days]. He was so funny, friendly and good-humoured! It was only much later that I came to hear his miraculous performances of Monteverdi in the famous Nadia Boulanger recordings - and then Socrate [ the only one to capture Satie's pure seriousness and lack of pomp. He's sung such mar.velous music - from trobadour to Berlioz, Berg, Stravinsky: the perfect real musician

  • @misuc1000 Thank you very much for your comment. I heartily concur--an extraordinary musician, and his stylistic approach to antique music is most convincing!

  • Stunning voice.

  • Fascinante Voz , Magnifica !!!! Edmund Sube mas Videos del Maestro , Gracias !!!!

  • 107 years young now and working on 108 in June 2010 - - great, intelligent singer with beautiful timbre voice of the highest magnitude !

  • Thank you. I absolutely agree. I bought this record over 50 years ago, and have virtually played the grooves off of it. It's a bit scratchy...I probably should take it down temporarily and run it through one of my sound processing programs to smooth it out. Yes, just think, almost 108. I can hardly believe it. Must be the Swiss mountain air!

  • @EdmundStAustell Thank you, Edmund, for your posting to me about this wonderful singer. I'm embarrassed that I hadn't heard of him before. How beautiful & relaxing his singing! listening to him is like a soothing balm to the ear, very much like Tino Rossi. I've never been attracted to size of voice for the sake of size alone, I only yearn to hear a voice healthily & sympathetically 'played'. Unlike many a much bigger voice, I could listen to Hugues for hours. Thank you again. John.

  • Thank you. Yes, I know exactly what you mean. The record from which this comes is over 50 years old, and I have virtually worn the grooves off it. I'm surprised it still plays:)

  • beautiful recording! And a phenomenal artist! Thank you for this video

  • Thank you very much. Yes, he was an immaculate stylist and a brilliant musician. Almost old enough now to remember the Middle ages:) :)
