Actually, it is true. If you take any sort of acting class that's worth anything, they will tell you that an actor, on stage, must use exaggerated movements. Small, barely noticeable movements fail to keep audiences interested, especially those who are closer to the back. If they can barely see the actors moving, it's not interesting anymore.
