Mr Rodney Jones... pleasure to meet you. I happen to stumble upon your demonstration here by chance, and I'm rather glad I did. You asked for some feedback so here are my two pennies for what it's worth: Your discussion here offered a very interesting perspective to me on chromatics and I found your explanation to be very clear... I have something to work from here and for this I am appreciative, so thank you kindly. Greetings from London!
Rodney, you play with such confidence and strength...and, you're a great teacher. I'm sad your DVD is not coming out until this summer but I look forward to it. I've been listening to those Benson runs for years and had no idea what the hell he was doing. He still does things that are just magical to me yet I know it's simple. Benson just executes them so well and tells a great story on guitar. I do still love, however, the classic sound a melodic solo on guitar using chromatics sparingly.
Very good video. I remember when I first figured this out back in the day, as much as it feels like "cheating" it can often give you a confidence and continuity to your lines that is invaluable.
Hi Rodney, love the content and presentation, but the sound & picture quality could definitely be improved. I'm not sure if this is just a rough version that you're planning to re-shoot later. Keep me posted on the release date. Thanks, Ed
Rodney does a descent job of explaining his opinion of chromatic linking of ideas in ones playing. Many guitarists including Rodney use this concept when improvising which is clearly influenced by George Benson who in my opinion was not only the innovator of this style of guitar playing but also refined it. However it is not that cut and dry. There is an art to playing this way along with a certain feel and sound that no one has come close to mastering to the likes of George Benson.
Looks interesting, be nice to have included a few written examples. I got what you were explaning, no need for text. Great video especially the bit about starting on the and. Thanks
This is Excellent, Remarkable, :-)
