subcribed ty!!! i love seeing stuff like this i loved the nintendo/sega war back in the 90s now that im older i went back and started picking up stuff for my collection. id have to say its alot more better to get like 10/15 games for the older consoles than it is buying a new game for the current gens lol
@Nonexistanthuman Sounds like me I grew up all Nintendo and hated Genesis back in the day but then just about 4 years ago I started collecting all the old stuff again and I really got into the Genesis.
please help i have 2 old megadrives they did work i put them away in 1990 tried to play with it 2009 does not work you turn it on no light nothing on screen help both the same
@UNAL0504 Mabye it got damp, Something short circuited, mabye you need to change the fuze or replace the plug? Try replacing the fuze, if not then get another plug.
I have an european Dreamcast system with a blue logo instead of an orange one, but the LED is still orange. I wish I could change it into a blue one so they'll match.
Great work as always. I was impressed with the megadrive mod, still looks pretty well factory minus the blackout and blue LED. Every time I see one of these videos i'm stoked to go visit the local Value Village or whatever and try to find one. I'll eventually get one somehow.
So is that the 1609? If so did you just break the little white clip off the board and then soldier the wires on? Because all the 1609s I have opened have a clip so you can take the LED off with the greatest of ease. Now modding the mk-1601-22 would pose more challenge since the red plastic piece and the LED don't just come off as easy. But still wouldn't be that hard. Good video man. I like the blacked out look. You should do a model 2 next. Those LEDs are soldier right on to the board.
This system had been opened and tinkered with before (not by me I mean whoever had it in the past) and they had the LED wires joined to new wires hooked up somehow. I assume they broke the white plastic piece off.
can all the genesis play the mega drive games? I have a genesis model 1(with no logo of the high defintion) and a sega model 2....Can I mod them to play mega drive games??? by the way this video is awesome......keep it up
Hrm cool. I've heard of people overclocking the Genny but I wasn't sure how hard it would be or what real world advantages it would give you. What are they mainly doing it for?
I haven't done it myself, but there's a lot of info on sega-16. The simple ones to mod are the Model 1's with the DIP 68k, basicly just soldering a wire from pin 15 to pin 15B of the cartrige connector (which has a 13.4 MHz signal which the 68k is very stable at), you have to include a switch to boot up in 7.67 MHz mode or you can get some glitches, mostly with sound. (some games won't work at all)
The Modle 2 with the QFP 68k isn't stable over 10 MHz, and I'm not sure about the QFP M1's.
The advantage comes in reducing slowdown, in 2D games like Sonic 2 with many moving strites on screen. (esp a bunch of enemies and rings flying after getting hit)
It should also help in games like Hard Drivin, Race Drivin,F-15 Strike Eagle II, MiG-29, Zero Tolerance, Cyber Cop, and Battle Frenzy. (the EA polygonal games like F-22 interceptor may not work due to the use of the Z80 as a coprocessor)
mn12bird, im from the uk n i always watch your vids n deanothelegend87 vids as well n i jus have to say that u both know ur stuff n u both rock totally
wow.. nice work on the corners,, i remember as a kid just stabbing my mega drive with a chisel to snap those corners off,, made my md rattle,, hey but it played Japanese games.
nice job, I think an all white paint job would be cool, and go over the 16 bit logo with a silver sharpie or paint pen to give it the chrome look again.
Usually better sound quality and the possibility of a TMSS free system (plays a few games mainly bootlegs the others wont) and it boots up a few second faster.
My copy of Darius II has wider round parts on the cart, and I had to shave a tiny bit from the rounded edge of the slot to get it to fit. I also took off a tiny bit of material on the long flat edges since they seemed to be a bit of a close fit.
Yeah I hear ya the Japanese Model 1 looks great! I saw one here locally for sale in the box and passed it up. The price wasn't a super deal or anything but I guess it was fair. Kinda wish I grabbed it now!

What kind of Sandpaper do you use to sand a console before you paint it?
My Model 1 SEGA Genesis needs a Minor Paint Job.
Riddler95 7 months ago
@Riddler95 I have something really fine like maybe 1000 grit. Just enough to scuff it up and clean off anything stuck on the plastic.

Supposedly it's also very simple to overclock the model 1 (at least the early ones with the DIP 68000), only needing wire, solder, and a switch.

I'd say you're better off looking on eBay for a Japanese one, There's some really cheap ones on the market.
There's also a Hong Kong version which'll switch PAL and NTSC games.
