This video is labeled incorrectly, the sign at 2:14 clearly says "Grand Opening 1967". So this feature is not 1962. It just does not look like 1962 either.
Reminds me of what has been lost in this world. I sure miss the days when I could just turn on the radio in the car, and wonderful music like this was just so common and everywhere. '60s-'70s-'80s music was so taken for granted at the time; and great. I miss both the music, and the times. They were great--likely not to be repeated. The times and music now are....for the most part, not so cool. For a moment---a tune like this brings 'em back...*sigh*
This is the best "history" ever. My dad used to play this on vinyl. It brings back so many good memories. I like all types of mus but this is still so outrageously cool.

Terrific! This was a lead in to movies at our Drive-in theater in 1968, then you'd see either the "Pink panther" or "The Tiajuana Toads" before everything went PC.
The beginning of this song was the outgoing message on my answering machine for much of the early nineties, before "VOICEMAIL." LOL I still have the cassette tape. I love some HA & the TB!
@MrsClippit I believe it was filmed in 1967. The song was released in 1962. And this got Herb and the Tijuana Brass off and running throughout the decade of the 1960's.
I wonder what happened to the rest of his original band members...I know they had a sort of "reunion" in the 70's for one album they made, but I wonder where their careers went on to. Does anyone have a good source that one can reference? These guys were so great together. I have wonderful memories of hearing the TJB when I was a child. Thanks for posting this!
@Flavio9021 Thanks! Yes indeed, where I grew up in Tampa, my neighbors had the TJB cranked up on Sunday mornings, and what great sounds-and great memories ! Long live Herb Alpert and the TJB!!! :-).
YOU WILL NEVER GET A BETTER SALSA THEN HERB ALBERT & THE T.J. BRASS. NOT ONLY THEY ARE SO PROFESSIONAL PLAYING THE INSTRUMENTS; BUT THEY HAVE THE AMOR & TALENT THAT I NEVER EVER BEFORE SEEN IN A JAZZ OR POP GROUP IN THE WORLD!!! NO ONE, I MEAN NO ONE WILL EVER TOUCH THEM AS A GROUP!!!!! GOD BLESS1
I remember seeing this on t.v. when I was about 4 and a half. For the longest time I thought I'd imagines Herb and the boys in a bullring. Still a great song. Thanks for the video upload.
Wow I thought I was the only one that liked that part of this song best. If I heard it playing, I will always wait to hear that female singer. I don't know who it is, or they are, but it somehow reminded me of some soundtrack I heard on the TV show Star Trek long ago.

This is the old downtown El Toreo de Tijuana plaza (now torn down). I grew up in those very "sunny-side" stands (behind in General Admission). This was a wood and I-beam hazard, but so superior to Playas!

I started playing trumpet in 3rd grade when they still had music programs in school by the time I was in 6th grade I was first trumpet in the school band and went through Jr HS and Hs playing in the school bands I remember coming home from school and putting on my Herb alpert records and playing along Good memories
All this time I thought I was the only one who listen to this song over & over again when I was a kid back in the 70's... And fantasized about whip cream delight girl...
At age 9 I had a little record player in my bedroom and I'd play this song over and over again, feeling sorry for the bull who had the whole world cheering against him, and so grateful to Herb Alpert for honoring the bull with this beautiful song. What I'd give to see him live, here's hoping he tours to Canada someday.
God this song brings back memories! When i was a kid my mom had one of those t.v's with the record player built in and the big ass speakers on the side! She would crank this song. it's like being in 77 all over. Thanks for posting this vid.
I have had this song in my head since 1963.....never knew what it was..it was there...playing over and over and over...I have now found it and know who it is and am at last at peace.
This is the 45 version..they'd lost the Multi-tracks when it came time to do a Stereo verion for the Lp,so,they'd slammed th 45 on one side, then Alpert parroted his original trumpet on the right, making it seem like a Duophonic version, but,it wasn't..The Mono version finally showed up on Herb's "Greatest Hits" CD,issued in 1999.
I've always loved this song. This was their very first hit from 1962, and I believe this was the one that launched the A&M label. I just became aware of how much that guitar sounds like it might have been influenced by the sound of Duane Eddy. At least, that's how it sounds to me. Great find!
@57Will Duane Eddy? Maybe. The style you are hearing is a very traditional flamenco style. Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Mexico, especially Mexico. You hear it all over the place. Great stuff.

I remember getting a Herb Alpert and the TJ brass trumpet song book for my 10th birthday. I loved this song but couldn't hit the high notes on the intro. That frustrated me to no end. I quit trumpet in 8th grade and switched to guitar. I recently got back into trumpet (at 50 y/o) and was amazed that I didn't lose my lip even after about a 37 year lay off. I'm getting up to speed and can hit an E natch over high C. Hitting an A back in school just about killed me, so I am proud of myself.
Que pena non termos con mas frequencia las musicas de Herb Alpert & Tijuanana Brass, que embalou muchos casal apacionados na decada de 1970! Maravilloso....
@Michshnly, Your sentiments mirror mine. I first listened to THE LONELY BULL back in 1964 or 5 it was played by a band called the Arena Brass. They also did other beautiful melodies which have made a huge impression thru my life. Herb Alpert & his band are as great as can be. Viva real music. 124Toeknee@yahoo (60 yrs)
Heavens to Murgatroid! I remember seeing this TV special way back in the 60's when I was a kid! Brings back a lot of wonderful memories....when my mom bought a nice stereo at Sears back then, she went out & bought a lot of albums...many of them were Herb Albert & the TB. My whole family fell in love with the group! THANK YOU so much for sharing this delightful footage with us!
Yes, it is. A favorite of mine, 53 years old now, i remember playing my trombone (!) to this in the 5th grade (among many of his other ditty's). Did he know how iconic he would become?
Im 41 years old, so pretty much Im like alot of other people my age who got to know this because of their parents listening to this. What great music. My question is, Is this video filmed in the bull ring that´s in the playas area of Tijuana.
Does anyone know who the lady singer is who sings Ahhhh at 1:01 and at 1:41? She has a haunting quality. The answer is probably lost to time, but maybe someone will know.
They tore down that bullring in '07. There is a SD U-T article online from 2007 that shows a map of where the bullring was, and on the map you can make out that the "shaded block" is the same as the block containing the bullring in the video... the area around the bullring itself hasn't changed much in the 43 years, but the lower river zone in the background has totally changed... they built a concrete channel for the river, and now the river valley zone is all built up...with a mall & freeway.
I remember the half time show at our high school, in '68 all the music was Tijuana Brass. We had a 17yo kid who would march out to the middle of the field by himself, and blow the "entrada de los toros" and make the hair stand up on the back of your neck! man was he good!!! then we would join him for this song, good stuff!
I remember laying with Dad listening to Herb Alpert (on vinyl) this song in particular. Sunday after mass, my Dad and my other Brothers and Sisters all listening together. My Dad wiping away his tears as he prepared to take us back to my Mom's. Ahhh Bittersweet memories
@kanarva The video is footage from the first Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass special, sponsored by the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which aired on April 24, 1967 on CBS, five years after Alpert had a single with it.
@pladahitz The great thing about music, is that it not only evokes good memories but it also can soothe and mend a broken or saddened heart. This is a beautiful song,I hope it brings joyful memories to you.GOD BLESS YOU
I don't know about pladahitz but this song does bring back a ton of memories for me! I used to play the trumpet back in those days and I had memorized every song Herb played. Yes it now does help mend a sad heart. By the way, I'm returning to the trumpet after many years and will be playing in church from now on!
@legalrule Good for you!Church is always a good place to reflect and remember the good things GOD has given us-Just like this LEGENDARY song.Peace to you my friend!!!
My parents too always listened to great records and tapes (the latter in the car stereo) and I thank them for helping me build up my good taste for music. I remember listening to "Whipped cream and other delights" album non- stop! I'm glad there are more people here who share such experiences! Unfortunately very few kids today have this opportunity as most parents listen to crap music more and more asyears go by. A shame... We are fortunate, guys!

What a great song. 48 years later and I still love this song. Timeless...

Does anyone know who the lady singer is who sings Ahhhh at 1:01 and at 1:41? She has a haunting quality. The answer is probably lost to time, but maybe someone will know.

OK, this is not the bullring by the Sea. Spain?
bajatuna 1 year ago

The info above says "1962"
I was under the impression of watching it myself circa 1968/69...
The sign at 2:15 read GRAND OPENING 1967
Now, I'm all confused...
By the way, I met Herb Alpert back in 1988.
What a gentleman he is.
kanarva 1 year ago
@kanarva The video is footage from the first Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass special, sponsored by the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which aired on April 24, 1967 on CBS, five years after Alpert had a single with it.

Boy not only did Herb Alpert make a trumpet totally cool, but he managed to really pull emotion out of it.

Hey charger4079,
I don't know about pladahitz but this song does bring back a ton of memories for me! I used to play the trumpet back in those days and I had memorized every song Herb played. Yes it now does help mend a sad heart. By the way, I'm returning to the trumpet after many years and will be playing in church from now on!
God bless you too!
