Urm..The High A in this clip is just about perfect. There is still a school of thought that it's a good idea to have the High A sounding a tad flat. I don't subscribe to that. Listen to any professional player today. The High A is pitched exactly in tune with the rest of the chanter. That's just what Martin achieves here.
I play Duncan Johnstone with loads more grace notes than that (the way it is in the Scots Guards book.) Also It's slightly too fast in my opinion but not too bad.
ah lets not ask for their videos, they are probably already all over the internet as these people are most certainly world famous professionals. im going by their expert judging skills. but look on the bright-side, if these folks said it to the guys face he would just punch them.
Great performance, great fingering, but the jig is a bit rounded. The phrase endings are rushed and it would sound better if there were a slight emphasis at the end of each phrase, especially the last phrase. Its like the part never has a chance to end before he's into the next one.
Hmmmmm, in the second part of Fiddlers Rally there is a note error (C instead of E, but it works) and the beginning of the 3rd part he misses a whole bunch of graenotes on the low hand as well but recovers on the repeat. A bit of tape on high a and it's a pretty damn good performance. In competition it's how well you play and how poorly everyone else plays:-)
Taking into consideration that was my 5 performance of the morning so I was starting to get tired. Listen to the repeat of the 2nd part of Duncan Johnstone!
Well, you also have to remember that if you were in the room, it would probably sound pretty good. But since the camera is recording it, the sound disperses before it all reaches that mic...at least I think. I am in no way an expert on the workings of cameras and sound from music, maybe it would sound good.
used to stay next to johnstone family in glasgow-he offered to teach me pipes when i was kid-what a mistake missing out on that offer-best scots piper EVER
Wow, those are nice sounding pipes. Very bright sound! Great video.

@Riperpiper
It is almost perfect, it's a bit sharp because he seems to be overblowing the tiniest tad possible. It is very good though.

i would say what a great performance and
played with great finger control, i would say that it was played straight but no way rounded.

Pretty good, high a really puts this performance down though :(
Not sure I would compete with those 2 particular tunes unless i arranged them so they weren't played round.

His high A was perfect. The performance was brilliant.
piperdoon123 3 years ago
He was pulsing the jig just fine to me. It did not seem perfectly round at all.

if its so easy can you send me the link to your performance? Cheers

Toughest part of memorizing Fiddler's Rally is the memory. 8 parts, no repeats, that's a lot of music to learn.

often you will find that also a video recorder sometimes can't handle all the sound. I think this is the case with this video.
Great piping though
