No, all "real" guns need to be modified to fire blanks. Usually, it's only a chambering mechanism. You can't just throw a blank into a real gun and fire. You'll blow the internals.

on an un modifyed M16 the blanks will not cycle the bolt thus, you have you chamber the next blank inorder to fire a second time. they have to put a block in the barrel with a tiny hole to build up enough pressurse to opperate the gas piston the little hole in the said block males it look as if it is firing.

there is only one difference between a normal weapon and a blank firing weapon, that is the blank firing adapter(bfa for short), it goes in or on the end of the barrel and serves one main purpose, and NO its not to keep it from firing live ammo, i forgot to mention that a blank round doesnt have the force to dechamber itself, push the bolt back and allow another round in, therefore the bfa applies pressure to the gases and such released by the blank...

a blank is a normal round of ammunition, but as many of you know it doesnt have an actual projectile in it, instead, it only contains a powder charge to get the same effect(except hitting something), it's then crimped at the tip once it has a certain amount of powder in it and then it's put in a box, bag, etc.
