I bought three, I guess I needed more. One ate the other two...well, pecked them to death. So, I got some snails for some other entertainment since I can't put any other fish in there and the damn tiger barb has bitten their eyes off! Poor snails!
I am finding difficulties in keeping my tiger barbs alive.I got one of the best filters which is eheim, I mix tap water with well water. the ph is 8 or a bit higher. what can you suggest me?
I keep reading that you shouldn't have gourami and barbs together. Have you had any problems with the barbs nipping the gourami? I want to get some barbs but I'm afraid they will nip at mine.
i just bought 2 tiger barbs, 2 green barbs, and 4 albino barbs...from my observation, the albino barbs are less aggressive compare to the other barbs...is that normal???
Today i just bought 5 tiger barbs and want to feed them something besides flakes and i saw this video, but i was wondering if and when i need to take the cucumber out? It can grow fungus if i leave it correct?
also today they were schooling, but now 2 are in the middle of my tank while the other three are on all different sides. is this bad?
I would advise getting maybe 3 more barbs. You see, the barbs will establish a pecking order, and the Alpha will often pick fights with the others. I advise at least 8 so the Alpha can spread out his/her agression so they are all only bullied a little. If they spread out like that, It just means they don't have any predators to look out for, and thus, the pecking order is more laid back. I usually take a cucumber out after maybe 6 hours or so.
For four? You could probably get away with a 10gal tank. I don't advise keeping them in a bowl though. In fact, as a general rule, try not to keep anything besides bettas in a bowl. Also remember that all Barbs form very close relationships with other barbs, so you may end up having to get more...

@djd711 My barbs are very active. They're usually so busy with each other that they don't really notice I'm there unless they're really hungry or I tap on the glass.
guys i need help. ok i just set up a 30L tank and went threw the correct stages and i put 5 tiger barbs in there 2 days ago. @princi57 Well that stinks. I hate losing fish. With Barbs, you never know what you are going to get. I had a neighbor who had to add one barb to his tank just so thatt he rest didn't kill each other.

hey... if the tiger barb was the only species in the tank (imaginary), how much space would it need and how many would it have to be with? i really need to know!!!
They need as many space as you can give them. If you ask for a minimum... The smallest animal-friendly way to keep them: A group of ten barbs in a 15 us gallon tank with some jungle vals in the corners to create some options to withdraw.
@iwuvpepperkitty Sometimes these fish like to chase each other. I have a 55 gallon with 12 tiger barbs, mixed group of albino and normal plus a few fry I raised from eggs.
If you had some floating hornwort on the surface plus plants on either end of the aquarium your barbs should be very happy.
If one of the fish is getting bullied, try to give it a place to retreat too.
More then six would be a good idea. 20 or higher would be best.
I'm assuming that's zucchini. How do you get them to eat it like that?! I always put a thin slice of zucchini in my tank( I have 4 tiger barbs) and they never even nibble at it!:(
Well, in my case it was coincidence. I wanted to feed my RTBS and chinese algae eaters, und suddenly my barbs also starts to eat that cucumber. So, i don't do anything special to get them to eat it. Maybe try some other vegetable like red paprika.
hi! nice tank! plz tell me wht did u use for substrate ( sand, potting soi;, kitty litter) also when algae prob come wht do u do? plz respond i need ur help! thnks
Hi! I'm using in this tank fine round shaped river sand. In my other tanks ordinary gravel. And what i do against algae? If i start a tank, i exaggerate the planting of fast growing plants like jungle vals. Since i do that, i never had an algae problem anymore.
I must say those are the healthiest tiger barbs I may have ever seen! Good job on the tank, is it a ten? And Im looking to do the same setup can you tell me your choice of substrate, plants and filtration?
Hi, check out another video i'm proud of called: "Best tankmates: Clown loaches and Tiger barbs / Prachtschmerlen und Sumatrabarben [1/1]" or /watch?v=1ptNIBUrmKQ . There you can see those little babys and how they look like when they grew up.^^ This tank is a 111us gallon tank. I chose round shaped river sand, jungle vals, and i've an Eheim proffesional II external filter in this tank.
Well... over here in Germany it's not allowed by law to keep fish in smaller tanks then 14 gallon. So i cannot recommend that. You should always keep a bigger group of tiger barbs (at least 7-10 fish) and they need enough room to swim (at least a tank size 9 times longer than their own size).
That would MAYBE be ok.. but.. if you ask me personally. I wouldn't do that. Those two species are like fire and water... In your case (e.g.) i'd think about getting a group of siamese algae eaters instead of the RTBS. Or maybe a flying fox or something less aggressive. You'll have definitely have more fun with a less "explosive" community.
@n03lzz ....could you help me? how many tiger barbs could fit in a 1 gallon tank with some plastic weeds in it? (no other speies included) is that ok for them?
That depends on the size of the tank. You should keep a bigger group then four. I recommend at least a group of 7-10. For such a group you need at least a 14 us gallon tank.
Take a closer look at the video. I stick it on the tip of a bamboo stick. Otherwise you can sink it with a clean stainless steel screw or a fork or something.
I leave it in there for about 2-3 days. In most times it's devoured completly after this period of time. If not i'm taking it out (It also starts to smell after more then three days). I feed cucumber once every one or two weeks.
I just bought 7 tiger barbs today and my red fin shark has been chasing them back and forth. It's been a few hours now and he seems like he calmed down a little but will still chase them if they get in his way. My barbs have been hanging out in the back of the tank. Did you have this problem when you put them together? Do you think it will get better? I have a 46g bowtank.
Tiger barbs and RTBS aren't a good combination. My RTBS starts chasing the barbs when he sees them. But my tank is big enough, so the barbs can leave his territory. Maybe you should use jungle vals or bogwood to seperate your tank in two territories. So the Tiger barbs can stay away from the RTBS. Check out the infobox of my other video called: "My three Red-tailed black sharks / Feuerschwanz Fransenlipper [5/5]" or /watch?v=N1v2Bg5-suc for further information
@n03lzz Thanks for the reply. I think they just needed to get used to each other. They now get along fine. Every once in a while when I feed them my shark getting a little nasty towards the barbs but they still all get to eat. I just they just needed a little time to get to know each other. Thanks again :)
@n03lzz Now I know why my shark has been getting along with them... he died last night. I think he has been sick the past couple of weeks.. I noticed he wasn't eating his wafers like he used to... =(
Somtimes it might take a few trys. And some people told me that their tiger barbs never start eating cucumber. I've heard of some only eating paprika. Just keep on trying.
@LIVE4SCOOTERS be careful w/ their size only when introducing them to the other colonies. They consider to be aggressive and have fin-nipping tendencies, but thats only toward smaller fishes than them, in the tank. If you get them as babies (when they are smaller than other fishes in your tank) they'll adapt to others just fine. I have them over 3 years now and they do just fine with my other fishes. Hope that helps :)
PLEASE SOMEONE REPLY!!!!!!!!!! I WANT TO GET TIGER BARBS BUT HAVE HEARD THAT THEY NIBBLE BIG FINS AND NO WAY IM NOT GETTING PLECO OR WHIPTAIL CATFISH SO COULD SO,EOME PLZ TELL ME IF TIGER BARBS WIL GO WITH THESE FISH? AND ALSO DO THE EAT PELLETS? thanks
u could put them in there if u have a big enough tank for example maybe 22 gal or something and make sure u have 6 tigar barbs in a tank if there is three they will mess with the other fish this creates them not to mess with the other fish but with each other
That depends on the size of the tank, and how it's planted. Can you tell me that? My tiger barbs eat everything. I never tried pellets but it might be ok, too. They don't need livefood or something.

@LIVE4SCOOTERS hey man, so wht other fish do u hav? for the most part tiger barb r not a prob. i hav had them with goldfish even! they do tail nip somethings, but it wasnt a prob. if u want to buy them buy then they r young like 1 cm long. i dont know about pallets, but they do eat flaks. u dont need to hav live food!
Ja da kann ich mich noch ganz schwach dran erinnern ;) Spaß beiseite, in dem Video ist das echt fast nicht zu erkennen, aber die Gurke steckt auf der Spitze des Bambusstabs. Vielen Dank für die Bewertung!
oh ok i noticed the long things they have in the front like mine do, but i only have a small 5 gallon tank of all tropical fish from mollies to platies to gouramis to tiger barbs to red eye tetras and a number of bottom feeders,kinda packed but not to bad being i baught mine from walmart any fish that dies i get a free one in its place so i work that well..my favorite being my syndodontis catfish =)
You don't have any tiger barbs in there anymore, right? Too bad, i cannot have a look anymore.
The other fish look healthy... Well, it's a bit overcrowed with goldfish... At least, i cannot see an obvious reason...
Another reason for dying fish , might be a bad "fish qualty". If the fish that you buy are too weakened, they cannot recover from the stress during their journey to a new tank and die. Stress is one of the primary cause for the death of new fish.
yea ill try to make a vid, and no they arent the only fish, we have several different type of fish. A pet store owner said they eat the food that falls to the bottom but i dont know. ill make a vid
I'm in the middle of stocking my first ten gallon aquarium. I was originally misguided into thinking that tiger barbs will be ok in a ten gallon. Upon further research, I discovered this is false, but it was too late to return them, and I don't really have the heart to part with the little guys, but I don't have the room to give them the numbers they need. I was told gouramis would be ok, but they nip at his antennae. How can I quell their aggression and prevent more damage?
In no case add gouramis. They won't be up to the barbs. The only way to quell their aggression is to get a bigger and well planted tank, because they tend to "fin nipping" and "extreme chasing" only if they weren't kept in a proper tank. Your barbs might need some hinding spots, maybe add some vals (the plants you see in this video).
I had 3 originally, but the nipping was getting worse, so at the risk of overstocking, I added 2 green barbs to help with the aggression issues. Remarkably, they have stopped bothering the gourami aside from the occasonal bump. But this also presents another problem. Just today, one of the green barbs (both greens are half the size of original barbs) began isolating himself from the others. Is this normal behavior?
It's like all of their behaviors intensify in small tanks. That's why you might get such problems. For tiger barbs (so also for green barbs) it's normal to speperate them from the group some times. That's why they need the hiding places besides the room for swimming. Their social behavior is complex and contains fights, isolation, hiding, schooling, etc.
Ok. Thank you for all your advice. Looking at my tank, I do need one or two more plants. Hopefully this will help, but if not, I'll probably end up moving the gourami to the serpae tetra 10 - gallon we have set up.
Hi, it's certainly not normal. You say: "my tiger barb". That means you have only one, right? That's the problem. Tiger barbs tend to develop such aggressions like "fin-nipping" if you don't match their requirements.
That means: You should keep a group of at least six barbs, and they need a tank in which they have space to swim and also big plants to hide.
For a community with mollies and tiger barbs i'd say a well planted tank with about 35 us gallon is needed. And another thing, if you have bad luck, you cannot cure the barbs behavior disorder anymore. :S
i have 4 tiger barbs about 3 months old now, and recently introduced 2 new white lion barbs as friends for them, they all get on really well and swim in a schoal its cool.......
yes correct, the golden tiger barb however is somewhat less deep in colour, these ones i have are a pure white with like beige-coloured fins, they are quite rare, £24 for 2 of them from an aquatic center near manchester.......
yeah they are nice fish, there were two in the tank among a load of green tiger barbs, so i asked what they were, he said they were not for sale, so i said ill give u £25 for both and i guess he couldnt resist, i read up on the net that they were very rare and only bred in captivity, may breed them as they are male and female, ill give u a shout if i do u can have one lol ......
hi n03lzz i was wondering how often u feed ur barbs, i have a new 15gallon tank with 2 tiger barbs and was told to feed once every 3 day should i keep it like this as ammonia builds up or is it fine to feed more often. also i want to add 4 more tiger barbs when would u think i would be safe to do so. should i add them in groups or is 4 at a time fine. also my tank is 3days old since fish being introduced
It's less a matter of how often you feed, but how much. You should feed your fish twice a day, and only that much, that everything is devoured after 5 minutes. Nothing should be left on the ground.
You should keep a group of at least 5-6. But in your case, you add your fish a bit early. Usually you 've to wait about 2-3weeks to cycle the water in your tank. But that's also a matter of your tapwater quality, the filration and how well it's planted.
hey nice barbs, i notice that your barbs have red color nose. i have 6 tiger barbs myself about a 1inch and a half long, when will they have red nose?
i had bought three tiger barbs recently ago and they have been nipping my angel fish i alot but then i found out that i need to buy 3 more to stop them from nipping
The barbs will stop finnipping if you meet their requirements. That means: Enough space to swim, hiding spots between big plants and yes, a bigger group of at least five.
i bought only 3 small tiger barb, should i buy large? ....uhm....what ph should they have? i have it at 7.4 is that ok? i also have 10 other fishes...1 small algea that never eats. 1 algea fish thats like almost size of a ruler and 5 small cichlid and 3 gourami...does the tiger barb need to be compatible to all the fish from its tank??
A pH of 6-8 is ideal for tiger barbs. How big is your tank? is it well planted? how do you filter it?
It's no matter if your tiger barbs are small or large, but in a proper tank, you should keep them in a bigger group of about 6+. But tell me more about your tank conditions. Can you define the other fish species more precisely? Your tiger barbs might start fin nipping if they were not kept properly...
If they got a place to hide, it's no big problem i think. Maybe you can restructure your tank, so that the dominating barb, cannot occupy the whole tank.
i have a 5 gallon tank with 3 fake plants, 3 orange type barbs and 2 tiger barbs, the orange barbs moove alot more then the tier barbs and my tiger barbs dont move alot. they usually sit inthe same place. i have a filter and feed thentropical fish flakes, is tehre anything im doing wrong to make them so lazy?
well thanks, i would buy a bigger tank in an instant, only thing is i dont have any money lol, but is tehre any certai food they eat or anything else i can do to amke them better for the time being?
Tropical flakes are ok. You should put your tank at a calm place. Tiger barbs need hiding places in big plants as well as free swimming space, but you cannot achive that in a small tank, that's the problem. Do everything to give them a stress-free life.
Greedy but cute lol

Well, in my case it was coincidence. I wanted to feed my RTBS and chinese algae eaters, und suddenly my barbs also starts to eat that cucumber. So, i don't do anything special to get them to eat it. Maybe try some other vegetable like red paprika.

Hi! I'm using in this tank fine round shaped river sand. In my other tanks ordinary gravel. And what i do against algae? If i start a tank, i exaggerate the planting of fast growing plants like jungle vals. Since i do that, i never had an algae problem anymore.
n03lzz 1 year ago

Can i Put 5 Tiger Barbs in a 10 gallon tank ?or.. no
xMrLeqendary 1 year ago
@xMrLeqendary
Well... over here in Germany it's not allowed by law to keep fish in smaller tanks then 14 gallon. So i cannot recommend that. You should always keep a bigger group of tiger barbs (at least 7-10 fish) and they need enough room to swim (at least a tank size 9 times longer than their own size).

I'm looking forward to getting my tank & tiger barbs in September, going to be my very first fish tank!
JohnG1730 1 year ago
@JohnG1730
If it's your first tank, think about these things:
-You need a bigger group of them at least 7-10 barbs.
-Such a group need a 14 us gallon tank.
-Tiger barbs also need hiding spots, so the tank should be well planted (e.g with jungle vals.
-In such a smaller tank, don't mix them with more aggressive species like Redtailed black sharks or less aggressive fish like gouramis.
-Get some books of fishkeeping and read them. =)
Best regards, Nils.

@n03lzz Thanks for your reply, really wasn't expecting it, hardly anyone gets back to me haha. Thanks for that.
I'm just about to add the water to the tank i've got. It's roughly 30 us gallons.
Would a group of 6 be okay with a Red tailed black shark in a tank that size?
I'll definitely be adding lots of plants and cover for them.
Thanks for the advice!
JohnG1730 1 year ago
@JohnG1730

(no other speies included) is that ok for them?
iwuvpepperkitty 1 year ago
I want to get tiger barbs but would you recommend about four of them in a tank with three cory catfish?
Apocalypsefilmstudio 1 year ago
@Apocalypsefilmstudio
That depends on the size of the tank. You should keep a bigger group then four. I recommend at least a group of 7-10. For such a group you need at least a 14 us gallon tank.

bakonlicious 1 year ago
@bakonlicious
I leave it in there for about 2-3 days. In most times it's devoured completly after this period of time. If not i'm taking it out (It also starts to smell after more then three days). I feed cucumber once every one or two weeks.
n03lzz 1 year ago
I just bought 7 tiger barbs today and my red fin shark has been chasing them back and forth. It's been a few hours now and he seems like he calmed down a little but will still chase them if they get in his way. My barbs have been hanging out in the back of the tank. Did you have this problem when you put them together? Do you think it will get better? I have a 46g bowtank.
butterflikissies 1 year ago
@butterflikissies

Hope that helps :)

u could put them in there if u have a big enough tank for example maybe 22 gal or something and make sure u have 6 tigar barbs in a tank if there is three they will mess with the other fish this creates them not to mess with the other fish but with each other
sammyiblegend 1 year ago
@LIVE4SCOOTERS
That depends on the size of the tank, and how it's planted. Can you tell me that? My tiger barbs eat everything. I never tried pellets but it might be ok, too. They don't need livefood or something.

gtr3cords 2 years ago
@gtr3cords:
Stress is one of the primary cause for the death of new fish.
n03lzz 2 years ago

i bought several tiger barb buty they keep on dying, why is that?

I have a question.
Avertyoureyes91 2 years ago
@Avertyoureyes91:
Hi!
Well that's a big problem.
First tell me how many tiger barbs do you have?
In no case add gouramis. They won't be up to the barbs. The only way to quell their aggression is to get a bigger and well planted tank, because they tend to "fin nipping" and "extreme chasing" only if they weren't kept in a proper tank. Your barbs might need some hinding spots, maybe add some vals (the plants you see in this video).
n03lzz 2 years ago
@n03lzz
Avertyoureyes91 2 years ago
@Avertyoureyes91:
It's like all of their behaviors intensify in small tanks. That's why you might get such problems. For tiger barbs (so also for green barbs) it's normal to speperate them from the group some times. That's why they need the hiding places besides the room for swimming. Their social behavior is complex and contains fights, isolation, hiding, schooling, etc.
n03lzz 2 years ago
Ok. Thank you for all your advice. Looking at my tank, I do need one or two more plants. Hopefully this will help, but if not, I'll probably end up moving the gourami to the serpae tetra 10 - gallon we have set up.

i have 3 molly's but my tiger barb bites their tail is that normal for them to do that?
Appleheadsk8er 2 years ago
@Appleheadsk8er:
Hi, it's certainly not normal. You say: "my tiger barb". That means you have only one, right? That's the problem. Tiger barbs tend to develop such aggressions like "fin-nipping" if you don't match their requirements.
That means: You should keep a group of at least six barbs, and they need a tank in which they have space to swim and also big plants to hide.
n03lzz 2 years ago
@n03lzz thank you, i guess ill go get some more tiger barbs
Appleheadsk8er 2 years ago
@Appleheadsk8er:
For a community with mollies and tiger barbs i'd say a well planted tank with about 35 us gallon is needed. And another thing, if you have bad luck, you cannot cure the barbs behavior disorder anymore. :S
But i wish you all the best!

Is the name "white lion barb" another name for the "Golden tiger barb"?
n03lzz 2 years ago
yes correct, the golden tiger barb however is somewhat less deep in colour, these ones i have are a pure white with like beige-coloured fins, they are quite rare, £24 for 2 of them from an aquatic center near manchester.......

adamidus 2 years ago
hi n03lzz i was wondering how often u feed ur barbs, i have a new 15gallon tank with 2 tiger barbs and was told to feed once every 3 day should i keep it like this as ammonia builds up or is it fine to feed more often. also i want to add 4 more tiger barbs when would u think i would be safe to do so. should i add them in groups or is 4 at a time fine. also my tank is 3days old since fish being introduced
lucas5674 2 years ago
It's less a matter of how often you feed, but how much. You should feed your fish twice a day, and only that much, that everything is devoured after 5 minutes. Nothing should be left on the ground.
You should keep a group of at least 5-6. But in your case, you add your fish a bit early. Usually you 've to wait about 2-3weeks to cycle the water in your tank. But that's also a matter of your tapwater quality, the filration and how well it's planted.
n03lzz 2 years ago
hey nice barbs, i notice that your barbs have red color nose. i have 6 tiger barbs myself about a 1inch and a half long, when will they have red nose?

The barbs will stop finnipping if you meet their requirements. That means: Enough space to swim, hiding spots between big plants and yes, a bigger group of at least five.

i bought only 3 small tiger barb, should i buy large? ....uhm....what ph should they have? i have it at 7.4 is that ok? i also have 10 other fishes...1 small algea that never eats. 1 algea fish thats like almost size of a ruler and 5 small cichlid and 3 gourami...does the tiger barb need to be compatible to all the fish from its tank??
paosterrrr 2 years ago
A pH of 6-8 is ideal for tiger barbs. How big is your tank? is it well planted? how do you filter it?
It's no matter if your tiger barbs are small or large, but in a proper tank, you should keep them in a bigger group of about 6+. But tell me more about your tank conditions. Can you define the other fish species more precisely? Your tiger barbs might start fin nipping if they were not kept properly...

hey no3lzz, i got a question.
In my tank i have:
1 RTS
1 pleco
2 odessabarbs
2 bumblebee catfish
and 3 tiger barbs. 1 odessa barb is always chasing the other 3 tigers and the other odessa. making them hide all the time... why is that?
Michael7klufas6 2 years ago
That's a matter of dominance between barbs. How big is your tank, and is it well planted?
n03lzz 2 years ago
30 gallon tank.
Michael7klufas6 2 years ago
If they got a place to hide, it's no big problem i think. Maybe you can restructure your tank, so that the dominating barb, cannot occupy the whole tank.

Unfortunally your tank is way to small for those fish. You need big groups of them. That makes them confident and active.

well thanks, i would buy a bigger tank in an instant, only thing is i dont have any money lol, but is tehre any certai food they eat or anything else i can do to amke them better for the time being?
imseanlol 2 years ago
Tropical flakes are ok. You should put your tank at a calm place. Tiger barbs need hiding places in big plants as well as free swimming space, but you cannot achive that in a small tank, that's the problem. Do everything to give them a stress-free life.
