I played drums with Jerry at Harrah's in Reno & Tahoe in summer '72 and he, of course, did this bit, as well as the Lone Ranger & Tonto. IIRC, he had the original Lone Ranger episode edited down to something 9 minutes and he pantomimed everything. He's a very funny guy and was fun to work with.
Although I am a great fan of Frankie Laine's I think the use of this song to entertain young ones is very good. Part of the comedy in this version is the straight - faced look on the youngster's face on the left of the film.
Jerry Van Dyke has been performing this hilarious parody for 40 years or so... saw him perform it at the Music Circus in Sacramento in 1974...funny as can be.
On the Gary Moore show, Feb. 5, 1963 Jerry Van Dyke does a routine as the Lone Ranger's first meeting with Tonto. Someone must find this and post it. It's even funnier than "Rawhide".
Years ago he did a similar bit on Johnny Carson, using the original Lone Ranger episode. Hilarious. If only someone could find it and post it. It was even better than this bit.
The song is Frankie Laine's Mule Train from 1950, which was an enormous hit at the time Jerry Van Dyke first performed this parody. Like most comedy from that time it's still funny.
Jerry Van Dyke is seriously nuts. I have always loved him!

I was just standing five feet from Jerry. Almost met him - but didn't. He was busy talking to other people.
