Beautiffly done, I'm also just learning this song and will be performing it next Monday, after hearing your version I think I can sing it somewhere between your's and Paddy Reilly's version
Thanks! I learned this version from Andy M. Stewart's "Donegal Rain" album. I did leave out a couple of verses (one intentionally, one accidentally). But I'm kind of glad I forgot to sing the happy ending verse; it just seems SO lame/unlikely to me...like it was tacked on at some point by someone who couldn't stand the ambiguity of this ending. Whereas I like the ambiguity! Hey, at least no one dies in this one, right? :D
Oddly enough I was thinking just the other day, it's almost unique in Irish Trad ballads for a love song to end happily. Having said that I tend to think of this as a fairy tale set to music, possibly intended as a children's song originally. It's also a very unusual tune for an Irish ballad, in fact it's been the hardest song re learning to sing it, but one of the most satisfying. wish me luck as I'm performing it tonight for first time. I love the sound of the harp by the way
I am wanting to learn this song to play it on my guitar and sing it for myself and only hope I can get it one tenth as good as this. You have the most beautiful voice and your playing is inspiring. Thank you
Thank you! It is really a simple song. I learned this version from the playing of Andy M. Stewart (it's on his CD "Donegal Rain". I can send you the chords if you like...PM me if so!
I have managed to complete my video, and while it is not a patch on yours, I have done as you suggested and have sent it to you as a video response. Hope you like it.
I just want to say that I think that you have the most angelically gorgeous voice I have every heard, really. You play beautifully, and that song brought tears to my eyes, I'm glad I can see something on here that is worthy of being on here, I hope you have many more videos.
I would actually like to learn to play more upbeat songs...I feel embarrassed to only play soft, quiet songs. Rhythmic playing and singing is a lot harder than ballads!
I've been trying to notate this arrangement in Finale, but alas, it was improvised to begin with, which makes it tough! I was messing around with using chord inversions to improvise, which is how it came about (it starts on an open-fifth A chord, thumb moves down to the D to make it a D chord, etc.) I was trying to see how seamlessly I could move from chord to chord without having to move more than one or two fingers. :) It's kind of a fun technique to mess around with.
Oh, I certainly agree. Not ever having had lessons, I play organ and harp in the method. I just improvise off of chord progressions or guitar symbols.
The version published in The Bonny Bunch of Roses has a happy ending where her father gives her leave to bring him back , she writes a letter then in haste, and they make a Lord of Matt Hyland, and then of course they can get married. Beautifully sung and the accompaniment was lovely.
Too true! I did know about that ending, because I learned this version from Andy M. Stewart. I kind of forgot to sing the ending verse (probably because I originally learned it from Kate Rusby, who leaves it off...I think she's allergic to happy endings!) On the other hand, I kind of like the ambiguity of this ending...and the happy ending verse always seemed a little far-fetched to me, anyway. ;)
oh gosh :) thanks! I'm working on a new tune as a request from my cousin, which I'll hopefully post in a few weeks. As I tend to do these things in bursts, I'll probably try to post another song at that point too. :)
You have a beautiful voice...and the harp playing is beyond description. You should think about recording a CD. I'd be first in line to buy it!! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent.

Hello, I referia which sometimes lack the necessary words to express emotions, and if I have not the Spanish, with English least, already have group of admirers, some Spanish friends love to sing like, well continues angel, and thank you hence we have gift
Lovely playing, good sound, and a _real_ voice; not overhigh, or hitting perfectly-sustained voice, but full of warmth, depth and emotion. Not forced at all, and a treat to listen to.
Thank you both so much! You're very inspiring. I'm getting more and more serious about the recording concept...I think I'm going to buy myself a good microphone for Xmas and see what I can come up with. :)
Argh, I replied and I think it vanished into the ether! Anyway, thanks *so* much...you're too sweet. I did buy myself a new mic for Xmas, and then decided to move, teach a harp workshop and play a house concert all in the same month, so I'm a little overstretched. But after I move I am ON IT!! ;)
Thanks! :) I've messed about with recording on my computer a bit, nothing professional. Hopefully I'll get that organized soon. Re: the arrangement, it is very spare :) but I'm still having a heck of a time trying to transcribe it in Finale...that's what I get for doing everything by ear! *grin*
Oh, I hear you there--most of the songs I play I've learned by ear (but that's probably because my sight-reading skills are rusted practically beyond use). Still, I have fun dinking around in Finale every now and then.
What sort of wood is your Dusty (it is a Dusty Strings, right?) made from? It has such an interesting grain pattern!
hi ya molly, me again, i jsy really needed to take a break from some revision and i thought what not better than to watch your video agian. Although, this time it actually made me cry. keep up the good work, girl! xxxxxxxxxxxx
I do agree with DLH975, thy voice is perfectly suited to thy harp, and to this song. It was as if thou wert the lady, singing in rememberance of thy love. Truly beautiful.
It's a well deserved compliment. Im going to be aunt soon, and I was thinking of playing it to her as a lullaby.... your playing is peacefull and soothing.
Will you marry me ????

Any chance of getting this arrangement from you? I love the kind of 'sparkly' chords under the melody. I arrange stuff in a similar style.
