I think that The Spy Who Loved Me was the first time that Roger Moore really nailed it as James Bond. The Spy Who Loved Me is a great Bond film.
I don't know why but I love Moonraker, I think it is the bets of the Roger Moore Bond Films. It was also the first James Bond movie I watched with a different actor portraying James Bond.
My list of best bond actors: 1 Sean Connery: the first and the best he was the best bond!!! 2 Timothy Dalton: for me the only bond that came close to being the best really underated wish he did more bond films pity!! 3: Roger Moore brilliant charm to the role he was a good bond for his time!! 4 pierce Bronson overated bond nothing special was good in goldeneye but that's it!! 5 George lazenby was not bad deserved another film!! 6 Daniel craig nothing brillant average!!!!
I completely agree with most everything you have said in this series. You are a fair judge of the Bond films in my opinion. However, you should know that the scene on top of the cable-car was not done on a blue screen; it was done on location, and without safety harnesses. One of the stunt doubles even hung one handed from the cable-car for some time.
@FngMutz You should know that he isn't talking about the stunt doubles, he's talking about the use of blue screen when Moore and Kiel are in the shot.
Thnx for posting the series; I've actually come to this in the middle, starting w/ the Moore James Bond movies, and thought his flix were just no comparison to Connery, the "essential" James Bond. I've read that Dalton is actually the closest to Bond as he is in the original books.
Ahh yes, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker and For Your Eyes Only in my opinion is the Golden Age of Roger Moore's Bond. A View To A Kill is a superb Bond film as well, and extremely underrated, though because Octopussy wasn't quite as good as the three prior to it, couldn't add AVTAK to the golden age.
Fabulous reviews, you mention that you get a bit carried away and spend too long on individual films but I think that's a strength. I think it would be great if your earlier reviews had as much detail as the later ones.
Moonraker was indeed the highest grossing Bond film at the time but as the series has covered such a long period of time, box office takings become an unreliable comparison of success.
The most commercially successful Bond is Thunderball.
@mcentepede in 1979 we thought that space shuttles would be flying weekly! that we would put up solar-power-sats in orbit...and rotating cities in space...yes lasers are needed to shoot down fast missiles...but normal artillery machineguns rifles shotguns handguns work even better in an astronaut shootout firefight! (you don't even need phasers)
@mcentepede 1979 reagan vs carter...usa vs ussr cold war in space! we were building 4 shuttles...ussr building energia+buran+polyus...we were planning to drop 40 h-bomb warheads out of shuttle bays...putting directed energy laser battlestars in orbit etc...1979 birth of s.d.i.
@mcentepede the usaf space force assault on drax's city in space is the best sci-fi shootout in history!...huge and deep sci-fi themes run thru moonraker...utopian eugenics...corporate fascism...war in space...the 7 shuttles in the movie...artificial gravity from spin...sex in space...stealth radar jamming...laser directed energy weapons...you could write a sci-fi termpaper on moonraker
@mcentepede I bet moonraker dvd sales soar worldwide from sci-fi fans! (i just put my dvd in my player and am going to watch it right now!) I also sing the theme song in the shower!..."moonraker all systems are go!"
@mcentepede the sci-fi genre owns moonraker forever! it is from 1979 disco era and its groovy!...dig it man! groovy!...the space shuttles...space station...space marines with laser rifles are supercool!..."moonraker forever!"
@mcentepede (honestly "on her majesty's secret service" is my favorite 007 story) but moonraker will be watched 1000 years from now because of the space shuttles into sci-fi! it also has mst-3k value! we claim it for sci-fi...others don't have to watch it!...moonraker belongs to sci-fi fans!
@mcentepede I'm not saying moonraker is a great 007 film! but we treasure it for 1979 a superb sci-fi film that shows space shuttle launches on the big screen for the very very first time before anyone ever saw a space shuttle (uss columbia launch was in 1981!)...the girls are sexy too! /@ milwaukee
Melina wasn't that bland, and Carole Bouquet wasn't a model "with little acting experience" in 1981, she played in some important films before, including Buñuel's "That Obscure Object of Desire" and Blier's "Buffet froid".
moonraker is unique!...non sci-fi fans can't comprehend it! or enjoy it!...(it rivals masterpieces like the green slime and moon zero two!)...moonraker is fantastic!...
@ufogelfling1 MoonRaker was stoopid. Roger Moore was pretty much invincible in this flick...and so was Jaws. Jaws was like the Wile E. Coyote as he kept getting blown up then walked away and entered the next scene unscathed. You guys can't possibly be serious in saying this was a great James Bond film.
let's say in 1979 a sci-fi movie just like moonraker (but the main character is not named james bond 007) was made...it still would have been a nice sci-fi hit!...so within the sci-fi genre moonraker is a huge milestone being the first bigscreen space shuttle movie...2 years before anyone ever saw one launched into orbit! excellent on big screen!
moonraker 1979 is a sci-fi masterpiece!...it showed on big screen to americans how a fleet of space shuttles should work!...i saw it at age 15 with my father and it is one of my fondest movie memories!...sci-fi claims moonraker in its genre forever protecting it from critics! (hands-off!) moonraker rules!
I think Moonraker had a really good story that got held down by two things, one was the over the top space battle, that was too ridiculous and star wars-esque for my taste. The other was the guy who played Drax, they should have gotten Kevin Stoney who had been on Doctor Who a few times in the sixties to play him, much more charismatic as a sci fi villain.
I really like the overall reporting on the films but, I do feel he is giving too much of his own opinions towards the films instead of letting the viewer come up with their own opinions to each film. “What one dislikes another might love”.
Moonraker was probably the 2nd worst film in the Bond series. #1 worst movie undoubtedly goes to Die Another Day. I'm kind of shocked that the author of these YouTube series was more critical of the Man With The Golden Gun than Moonraker. ....don't get that at all.
The Spy Who Loved me is one of the GREATEST bonds. Great THeme Song. Good plot(Although some what chessy stil..mor belivable then say moonraker)And Roger Moore does a good job.
I loved Moonraker, though it was a bit hammy, I thought it was exotic, which is something I want from a Bond movie and it was great, that Bassey provided the Bond theme again. I wasn't fussed on For your eyes only.
You're no doubt familiar with Blondie's theme for the movie which was dropped for the Sheena Easton song? I love the Blondie song far better.
Stromberg had webbed hands?! o_0 He's been underwater too long! Jaws was a great, menacing character, when he was introduced in The Spy Who Loved Me, but he was definitely cartoonish in Moonraker.
Jaws was not supposed to be in Moonraker. But this would be a simple re make of The Spy Who Loved Me. Drax and Stromberg had the same goal. Create a master race, but Drax, space and Stromberg, under the sea
