It takes 4.4 seconds from shot sound till hit sound. 1000 yards = 914.4 meters, speed of sound is 340.29 m/s so it already takes 914.4/340.29=2.69 seconds for the sound of the bullet hitting the target to return. leaving 4.4-2.69=1.7 seconds for the bullet to travel those 914.4 meters. So the bullet is traveling at 914.4/1.7= 533.8 m/s *3.6= 1921.8 km/h /1.609= 1194 miles per hour. The bullet should approximately be traveling at that speed I'd say :-)
yeah it sounded like he was shooting subsonic loads if that was a thousand yards figure sound travels at right around 1,100 feet per second id say his loads where around 1,050 to 1,070 fps just a guess
@Noobpatty Yeah 3 seconds is the time for the sound to get back to the camera, so you're looking at around a 1 second flight time for the projectile giving you between 2.500 - 3000ft/s average velocity, which is about right for a rifle calibre.
Amazing. Get a great gun like the GAP and a great shooter together like LL and you can hit targets at 1,000 yds with a tiny little 18 inch barrel. That is way cool.
have a question if you can help I want to buy a remm 700 and what do I need to do to make it atleast comfortable at 600 yards is it the rifle set up or is it the scope like consistdent shots at 600 yards thanks
Inspires me to get that 20" barrel boltaction rifle in .308 caliber(most precision/sniper style rifle barrels are 22"-26" in lengh).
There is a rifle that has 17 inch "assaultrifle" lengh and that is the old West German design,"G-3",and fires the full-power 7.62mmx51 Nato(aka .308).
@pveg65 Dude, tracers are not match bullets... you think you can pull off that kind of accuracy with a tracer... you must not understand ballistics too well.
If I wanted to waste shots - I would shoot surplus junk, and not match loads.
@pveg65 If you look at the last shot on the smaller target you can see the hit after about only 2 seconds. The rest of the time it takes to hear the shot is the sound traveling back. And I agree with you that being able to see the bullet in flight is cool. On certain days, when the conditions are right you can see a vapor trail.
@pveg65 Most of that "5 seconds" was the sound of the hit traveling from the target to the shooter. Not the bullet traveling to the target...Just sayin'
@pveg65 You don't want to run tracers through a barrel like that, they'll eat it up,it was all fine and dandy when I ran tracers through GPMGs and M-16s when I worked for uncle Sam,they were free to shoot, but even with mil spec chrome-lined barrels, tracers still take their toll and you've got to stay on top and give those barrels extra attention after running tracers,SHLowlight is also right about tracer ballistics,I don't even run ball through mine, google proper barrel break-in
What a nice and helpful answer this is for somebody (@pveg65) who probably doesn't actually know much about match grade ammunition, ballistics and barrel wear. Too bad SHLowlight had to go off like some kind of socially maladjusted prima donna douchebag in his response.
While SHLowlight is a much better marksman than I may ever be, he's not enough better than lots of other great marksmen to be such a self-absorbed and churlish cunt.
This is true shorter barrels don’t have as much play from the shooter moving around. For example if you have a 26 inch barrel you are increasing the sensitivity for how you need to hold. The bipod becomes further and further back and acts as a balance point. The closer the bi- pod to the end of the barrel the more stability you have. to bad you cant mount a bi- pod to the berrel without affecting the free-floating job.
fkn sick! K Factor trick thats for sure! :) nice longshots ! i could never do that the first shot, i'd have to go through 60 bullets or more until i'd do it right! lol
Great video!!!! I know for a fact that it is possible to shoot a 1000 yards because someone i know has a reminton 700 with 18 inch barrel and we would shoot often at long ranges.
I followed this link from the "Rifle Dynamics" face book message /"Guerrilla Sniper Rifle"/Nevada Shooter's fourm, does George build for Rifle Dynamics?
What kind of platform did you start out with, and if you don't mind me asking, what was your cost?
@OakIslandBandit I don't know anything about Rifle Dynamics or whether or not GAP builds anything for them ? I didn't even know they linked this video, which is fine...
The scope is a NF F1 3-15X - the rifle was a simple Remington PSS when it started.
The Gladius is available from GAP I believe they cost a bit over $3k
One more thing. Lowlight makes this look easy. The GAP rifle is roughly 4k plus another 1500 or so in glass, plus this guy gets to shoot all day for a living. Reaching out to 1000 yards plus with a .308 and an 18" barrel is not an easy feat, but doable wiith the right equipment, and most important the right shooter. I will be anxiously awaiting the 2010 SH build. I am saving my pennies for whatever SH and George come up with. LL, any timeframe when the 2010 will be announced?
I cannot believe the responses from people who are questioning the stated range. This is one of the most recognized ranges in North America. SF Operators, Gov Agencies, and the private sector come here for training and Lowlight's reputation precedes him in the long range community for his outstanding commitment to bring valuable info to a COMMUNITY of long range enthusiasts. The saddest part is the ignorance of physics and basic math, (est. time of impact + sound waves being transmitted back.
TFRE3927: I love my 700 LTR if you haven't tried the Fedearl 168gr Sierra match kings in it you are missing out. My rifle prints .1-.25 moa consistenly with these loads.

I get those people saying my shots aren't the distance I claim they are, and my shots aren't very far at all.
Isn't it odd how they can't do any math or even time the shots to come to these conclusions? It is just "a feeling" they have or "it doesn't look like it."
That they are not embarrassed for coming to these conclusions with zero data to support them, is a testament to their lack of knowledge of the subject.

@joealonso89 If you figure out the arch of the bullet you can zero your rifle at a shorter distance. For example, you can zero a M16 A2 at 30 yards and it will be accurate for 300 yards.
Don't forget optic height is a major part there, at 30 yards the bullet hasn't risen its highest yet, I know I sighted a rifle at 50 yards to get a grouping after just putting a new scope on it and backing out to 100 yards it was hitting high.
seriously dude i see how the truth hurts you.and i'm sorry lol. besides i did not all together say that you didn't ,i only questioned it.you should wipe the tears and read what i wrote just one more time .you might not like it but... "its just my opinion"
You guys who keep trying to say it's not a 1000 yards are pretty funny... especially the guy who shot 1000 yards 100x in the military but doesn't know about time of flight or that this range is internationally known and a regular stop for many in the military. it would be pretty stupid to lie about it.
But keep guessing because it makes me laugh... and I appreciate good humor.
@SHLowlight He mate, sweet vid - you're making me feel really good about getting a LTR with a 20" barrel. Goes to show the crap that can be spinned by theories of other ppl comparing sizes of their.. barrels.
I tried to find info in the posts if this is a 3.5-15 or 5.5-15 NXS - which one? I'm thinking of putting a 3.5-15x56mm on the LTR so just wanted to know what you're using. I know military use 10x to shoot that far but you looked very comfortable with that scope.
There's no doubt in my mind that's 1000 yards, I wouldn't doubt if it was even further! Anyhow good shooting my friend, especially with an 18" barrel! nice rifle too ;)
1000 yards ?eh im not sure about that ,doesnt look like it,ive shot out to 1000 yards 100 times or more in the service and just by experiance it was a hell of alot further looking than that.you can do anything with the computer now a days as far as making you look and sound like your the man.now im not saying he didnt.its just that as many times ive had to do it, it just doesnt look like it,sorry, just my opinion
You obviously don't know what 1000 yards looks like. The range he filmed this at is shown in other youtube videos as well, look up the episode of "tactical impact" with Larry Vickers on 338 lapua magnum rifles. They shoot from the same tower, at the same berm and state it is 1000 yards.
is that a nightforce 3.5-15 or 5.5- 22 power? is that you in the byers range video? are you a member at crci? if so im in the process of becoming a member and your profile says your and instructor, private lesson? because i would be very intrested.
Yeah I see what you mean bro! At first I was thinking 500yds. But the sound is a dead give away. Plus its pretty flat out there. Looks like west Texas Iv seen things at afar in west tx and went to walk towards them to find out it was a lot farther away then I first thought just looking. Sweet rifle man!
nice shooting bro. i was curious as to if the yardage was infact 1000 so did some calcs. 4sec shot to clank. sound is 375 yards/ sec gives 2.6 sec @ 1000 yds + given ur muzzle velocity on other comments 858.3 yards per sec gives 1.4 sec of flight time. right on man.
2575fps with that lot of Cor Bon 175gr, I have gotten as much as 2605fps with factory 175gr ammo. I can get more if I use 170gr HPS from Lapua, and you can get more with a 155gr load. Anyway you slice it, from 2575fps up...
Get a savage, Its a good Platform.. Its more skill than too. There is a guy on youtube shooting a $90.00 rifle (mosin Nagant PU) at 900 yards. Brand loyalties only go so far.
I was thinking about getting the savage 10 but now that I have seen this vid, I would like to see a heads up against the two. Do it if you can. Great video!!
@netstepb you're kidding right ? Nothing wrong with starting out with a Savage, but this is $3000 custom rifle which just happens to be built on a Remington action. The Savage doesn't come close. I have a tricked out Savage, about $2500 worth in it. It started out as a 10FP but is not a custom 6BR, still tactical looking but not tactical at all. its good because it is has a good barrel, but it all ends there.
Why do people think an 18 inch barrel cannot perform? As long as the round has stability I don't think the length means much... Perhaps lamer barrels need longer lengths for imperfections in grooving?
I'm guessing here, mind telling me what the hell they are saying? Probably the same crew that think contrails put out by jets are mind control...
not mind control, weather modification and NASA call them Aerosols, they consist of aluminum oxide and barium salts and sometimes So2. NASA has been experimenting on controlling the green house effect due to "so called Co2"
No, there are people who think that contrails have thought control agents in them, to make the public less agitated. I wish I was joking, but I had to hear some nut ball explain it to me.
As a pilot, I thought it was pure gold, I told him you got us, we put 1 cup of Thought Control Agent 4 in per 1,000 pounds of fuel, but you didn't hear it from me.
never heard that one...funny, but the only thing really harmed by barium salt is the honey bees. this chemical harms the insects immune system. I am a bee keeper and make it my business to know the effects chems have on honey bee husbandry. the major threat to bee's is pollen from GMO corn. GMO BT corn kills the hives next to fields that have this planted.
but mind control that sound like BS, so i agree. mind control is done by media like CNN, ABC, MSNBC and CBS not chem's.
@Jethro212 I think the longer the barrel the higher the muzzle velocity so the bullet stays supersonic longer and can reach longer distances. I'm not sure if it really helps accuracy all that much when you start getting that long, but I could be mistaken.
Ya, Ive used both mils and MOA. Matters on what your used to and what your scope reticle(for me PSOP/Nightforce mildot) is. Great shooting anyways, I've seen an 18 inch HK91(PTR 91) shooting 900 yards with a 12 inch goruping, people do underestimate 18 inch barrels.
It takes something like 1.6-1.8 seconds for the bullet to reach the target. A longer barrel will increase the muzzle velocity somewhat but it will only decrease the bullet flight time by a fraction of a second.
Regardless of the velocity of the bullet it takes about 2.7 seconds for the sound to travel back, to the microphone, from the target after the bullet strikes the target.
Lowlight, I read in your profile you're in Denver or thereabouts correct? The elevation would definately help out getting out there , but regardless, I knew that a 18" would get there. BTW, I wish that I had a range here in MO that I could get to shoot steel out to 1K yards.
I have no clue what you are saying about 1 MOA ? One MOA where, I'm not using any MOA, I shoot with Mils, I used 12 Mils to hit that target and I used 1 Mil of Wind, which I held, not dialed. (When I said a tick over center, I dont mean holding hight I held a bit more like 1.2 mils) Its a standard based with a standard scope zeroed at 100 yards
MOA=Minutes Of Angle. By Mils I'm assuming you're refering to your scope's reticle (Mil Dot or TMR?) How're are you shooting 1000 yards without dialing in for that range?
I know what an MOA is, but i am not using MOA, my scope adjusts in Mils, the same as my Reticle. I don't use MOA as mils are easier. I am dialed, I have 12 Mils dialed in for elevation, and I held 1 - 1.2 Mils in the reticle. My scope turrets and my reticle match 100% so I can use either just as effectively.
For me it's just an easy way to do it, in my opinion it has no bearing on accuracy or shooting methods, it's just something we do. Now someone else may have a superstition on why they single load, but I just figure its simple and easy. I may load a magazine up, then single load after it just all depends on the situation. I always load the magazine when shooting multiple targets, or moving targets, but doing something slow fire it doesn't matter much.
The bullet should approximately be traveling at that speed I'd say :-)

if you dont think this is a 1000 yard shot, you are an idiot and need to go back to xbox live
Sound delay is the give away. 1000 yard shot for sure.

is that a nightforce 3.5-15 or 5.5- 22 power? is that you in the byers range video? are you a member at crci? if so im in the process of becoming a member and your profile says your and instructor, private lesson? because i would be very intrested.

How much are you having to come up for that, what is the twist-rate and load?

@pankake2301 You and me both. Nice shooting SHLowlight. What state are you in if you dont mind me asking.
XFoolXProofX 10 months ago
Ya, to the untrained, I can see where it might not appear to be a 1000 yards.... but believe me, it is.
Sound is a dead give away, the delay in the sound. Remember the video is zoomed in, so that makes it appear closer than it really is.
finally, its a training facility visited by many a month, if I was making it up, some one would know and have already commented.

SH is a Beast if you are not familiar with Sniper's Hide its probably a good time to go back to plinking with the .22

Yeah I see what you mean bro! At first I was thinking 500yds. But the sound is a dead give away. Plus its pretty flat out there. Looks like west Texas Iv seen things at afar in west tx and went to walk towards them to find out it was a lot farther away then I first thought just looking. Sweet rifle man!

you cant shoot an 18" barrel at 1100 yards
Sturmmann 2 years ago
nice shooting bro. i was curious as to if the yardage was infact 1000 so did some calcs. 4sec shot to clank. sound is 375 yards/ sec gives 2.6 sec @ 1000 yds + given ur muzzle velocity on other comments 858.3 yards per sec gives 1.4 sec of flight time. right on man.
skyski80 2 years ago
Man if this rifle is at Rifles Only when I go there... I may see about renting it for the class. Always a pleasure watching your vids Frank.
peppersnatcher 2 years ago
Do you know what kind of muzzle velocity you're getting with that rifle/load?
REDGUNRIDER 2 years ago
2575fps with that lot of Cor Bon 175gr, I have gotten as much as 2605fps with factory 175gr ammo. I can get more if I use 170gr HPS from Lapua, and you can get more with a 155gr load. Anyway you slice it, from 2575fps up...

Netstepb,
Get a savage, Its a good Platform.. Its more skill than too. There is a guy on youtube shooting a $90.00 rifle (mosin Nagant PU) at 900 yards. Brand loyalties only go so far.
scottpd1404 2 years ago
I was thinking about getting the savage 10 but now that I have seen this vid, I would like to see a heads up against the two. Do it if you can. Great video!!
netstepb 2 years ago
@netstepb you're kidding right ? Nothing wrong with starting out with a Savage, but this is $3000 custom rifle which just happens to be built on a Remington action. The Savage doesn't come close. I have a tricked out Savage, about $2500 worth in it. It started out as a 10FP but is not a custom 6BR, still tactical looking but not tactical at all. its good because it is has a good barrel, but it all ends there.
SHLowlight 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
my buddy got the savage 111 in 300 win mag and it shot a .3 moa @ 300 yards out of the box. $1500 retail.

Jethro212 2 years ago
not mind control, weather modification and NASA call them Aerosols, they consist of aluminum oxide and barium salts and sometimes So2. NASA has been experimenting on controlling the green house effect due to "so called Co2"
mechanicalbu11 2 years ago
No, there are people who think that contrails have thought control agents in them, to make the public less agitated. I wish I was joking, but I had to hear some nut ball explain it to me.
As a pilot, I thought it was pure gold, I told him you got us, we put 1 cup of Thought Control Agent 4 in per 1,000 pounds of fuel, but you didn't hear it from me.
Jethro212 2 years ago
never heard that one...funny, but the only thing really harmed by barium salt is the honey bees. this chemical harms the insects immune system. I am a bee keeper and make it my business to know the effects chems have on honey bee husbandry. the major threat to bee's is pollen from GMO corn. GMO BT corn kills the hives next to fields that have this planted.
but mind control that sound like BS, so i agree. mind control is done by media like CNN, ABC, MSNBC and CBS not chem's.
mechanicalbu11 2 years ago
@Jethro212 I think the longer the barrel the higher the muzzle velocity so the bullet stays supersonic longer and can reach longer distances. I'm not sure if it really helps accuracy all that much when you start getting that long, but I could be mistaken.
zZrEtRiBuTiOnZz 1 year ago
what was your moa adjustment for that range, and what do you keep your precision rifle sigthed in at?
thecombatmaster 2 years ago
the rifle is zeroed at 100 yards, and I use MILS not MOA. I used about 12 Mils which if you X 3.43 gives you about 41 MOA to 1000 yards.
Apparently a large number of Youtube viewers don't understand the concept of using Mils instead of MOA.
SHLowlight 2 years ago

Sure that sounds good, but I shot this at Rifles Only in Kingsville TX, elevation on the tower, 78ft above sea level.
SHLowlight 2 years ago
Lowlight, I read in your profile you're in Denver or thereabouts correct? The elevation would definately help out getting out there , but regardless, I knew that a 18" would get there. BTW, I wish that I had a range here in MO that I could get to shoot steel out to 1K yards.
itmcomputersdotcom 2 years ago
I stand corrected.
itmcomputersdotcom 2 years ago
agreed, MO has no long distance ranges. hell if you find one, let me know
gammathetasbear 2 years ago
Just 1 MOA above the target? What kind base is your scope sitting on, and what was your elevation zeroed for?
whutdacrap 2 years ago
I have no clue what you are saying about 1 MOA ? One MOA where, I'm not using any MOA, I shoot with Mils, I used 12 Mils to hit that target and I used 1 Mil of Wind, which I held, not dialed. (When I said a tick over center, I dont mean holding hight I held a bit more like 1.2 mils) Its a standard based with a standard scope zeroed at 100 yards
SHLowlight 2 years ago
MOA=Minutes Of Angle. By Mils I'm assuming you're refering to your scope's reticle (Mil Dot or TMR?) How're are you shooting 1000 yards without dialing in for that range?
whutdacrap 2 years ago
I know what an MOA is, but i am not using MOA, my scope adjusts in Mils, the same as my Reticle. I don't use MOA as mils are easier. I am dialed, I have 12 Mils dialed in for elevation, and I held 1 - 1.2 Mils in the reticle. My scope turrets and my reticle match 100% so I can use either just as effectively.
SHLowlight 2 years ago
So you adjusted your dials for 12 mils, and ALSO held 1 mil above in the reticle?
whutdacrap 2 years ago
No, 1 mil was Windage, the 12 Mils was elevation. I dialed on my elevation, and held my windage.
I didn't hold any elevation, it was point of aim / point of impact for that, the windage is where I held the reticle.
SHLowlight 2 years ago
Gotcha, well good shooting!

What contour barrel it is ??
jazon9 2 years ago
For me it's just an easy way to do it, in my opinion it has no bearing on accuracy or shooting methods, it's just something we do. Now someone else may have a superstition on why they single load, but I just figure its simple and easy. I may load a magazine up, then single load after it just all depends on the situation. I always load the magazine when shooting multiple targets, or moving targets, but doing something slow fire it doesn't matter much.
SHLowlight 2 years ago
I noticed in a lot of videos where people are shooting for long range accuracy they single feed the rounds by hand. Why is that?
disturbedone5009 2 years ago
Man great shooting! Seems like it took a bit to get the round to the target what was surprising to me.
digitalX198 2 years ago
Factory - the boxes are sitting right there in the video.
Cor Bon or Black Hills, in this video I am using the Cor Bon Sniper's Hide Version which is just a 175gr SMK Load.
SHLowlight 2 years ago
Which ammo you use , factory or handloads ??
jazon9 2 years ago
impressive. Nice shooting
396Diesel 2 years ago 2
It depends what ammo I shoot, but figure about 50fps less than a 24" or 26" barrel regardless. not much difference at all.
I shoot different stuff all the time, anything from 2600fps to 2800fps if I use the HPS ammo from Lapua.
On this day the Cor Bon load I was using goes about 2605fps.
SHLowlight 3 years ago
What speed do U get out of that barrel with your ammo?

I know John Tacke from Bartlien barrels. He was my neighbor when I used to live in Wisconsin. Just a great great guy. He probably cut this barrel.
