I live next to the factory in Dresden, Germany, also some Rolls-Royce Flying Spur are built in there. The car is probably produced to uplift the trademark image of Volkswagen (owner of a lot of brands as also Bugatti and significantly also Porsche). And of Audi, the brand with the now best image in Germany. (slightly in front of BMW and Mercedes)
@ladresde Update your informations. No Flying Spur has been assembled in Dresden in the last five years. Since the end of 2006 only the Phaeton is finished there. And by the way, it is BENTLEY Flying Spur, not ROLLS ROYCE (which is not even part of the Volkswagen AG anymore).

While guy in the video goes over the car and keeps bringing up Audi, I think it is important to note that this car is the platform for the Bentley Continental.
For the money this car is, in my opinion, superior to the Audi A8L and the Mercedes Benz.
You have to actually drive one of these cas to fully appreciate what it has to offer in the luxuray car market.
@Metalguy696 In Romania a used one cost 11.000 euros.(13.000 USD) The price is for the 4.2 gasoline engine. If you are looking for a 3.0 TDi the price rise at 15.000 euros.
Volkswagen by all accounts built an excellent car with the Phaeton but then they made a huge marketing blunder by calling it a Volkswagen. When Toyota decided to create a luxury brand they didn't call it the "Toyota Lexus" and stick a Toyota logo on the front end. It was just called "Lexus." If VW had simply called this car the "Phaeton" as a new brand it would have been much more successful. Lexus didn't get stuck with such a handicap and they've sold millions of units by now.
@JackKangaroo1 It is essentially an Audi A8 anyway. I think they were filling a niche. Take the Golf / Leon / Fabia, A3, Beelte. All the same car / engines parts etc.. but all bought by different people wanting different things... getting the same thing.

I'm an American and what I've seen of German cars leads me to believe that Audi is actually the best of the bunch. I think the A8 is superior to a 7-Series BMW or an S-Class Mercedes. The Phaeton is even in Europe a very rare and special car. It's better than an Audi A8 or an Mercedes S-Class, and sometimes cheaper. but nobody wants it. My father used to drive a BMW 730D, everybody looked at us when we drove down the boulevard. Two years later, in a Phaeton Diesel, nobody noticed us. That's the best of this car, it's superb.
their are vw's that are nicer than that car, if you don't look out for the most expansive. the Phaeton is not really vw style and kind of dispensable.

@BiggNEO They still sell it in Europe, but stopped selling it in the US because they sold so few last time around.
In 2006 they discontinued the car for the US market because they only sold like 800 units (perhaps even less according to some estimate).
So unless they reprice it or come up with a new marketing strategy, it will probably do bad again. For many people it was overpriced W with out the cachet.

This is an amazing vehicle! I took me two year to find a phaeton on used car lot. I had to drive it. It was an amazing experience. This is the number one car on my to buy list. Which will hopefully be summer 2012.
btw. I haven't met many people who know more about cars than I do. Whenever I go to car dealerships and I have questions about the cars (that I already know the answer to) they never seem to know. ;) I have been 'studying' cars since 2001.
However, Bentleys are supposed to be sporting, so the Flying Spur should be as sporting as it is. It fits the brand's mission. The A8 is supposed to be a sportier take on the large car as well, so the VW's role as the cushiest is fitting.
But you have the experience with all of these cars, not me. :)

No, they have not ....they still sell it in Europe and it is going strong. I guess more and more people are "discovering" the Phaeton. Plus, they have a 3.2 L engine there and it is a diesel....35-40 MPG. They did discontinued it here...which is a shame.

It was engineered under the orders of Ferdinand Piech-former CEO of VW Group. It was his "swan song". This car is substance - not a badge. Something most americans will never understand. @BiggNEO They still sell it in Europe, but stopped selling it in the US because they sold so few last time around.
In 2006 they discontinued the car for the US market because they only sold like 800 units (perhaps even less according to some estimate).
So unless they reprice it or come up with a new marketing strategy, it will probably do bad again. For many people it was overpriced W with out the cachet.
I thought it was a good looking car.

This is an amazing vehicle! I took me two year to find a phaeton on used car lot. I had to drive it. It was an amazing experience. This is the number one car on my to buy list. Which will hopefully be summer 2012.
btw. I haven't met many people who know more about cars than I do. Whenever I go to car dealerships and I have questions about the cars (that I already know the answer to) they never seem to know. ;) I have been 'studying' cars since 2001.

However, Bentleys are supposed to be sporting, so the Flying Spur should be as sporting as it is. It fits the brand's mission. The A8 is supposed to be a sportier take on the large car as well, so the VW's role as the cushiest is fitting.
But you have the experience with all of these cars, not me. :)

No, they have not ....they still sell it in Europe and it is going strong. I guess more and more people are "discovering" the Phaeton. Plus, they have a 3.2 L engine there and it is a diesel....35-40 MPG. They did discontinued it here...which is a shame.

Sir, you are not doing justice to this car. You should have learned a bit more about this automobile before making the video. This is a piece of art. It was engineered under the orders of Ferdinand Piech-former CEO of VW Group. It was his "swan song". This car is substance - not a badge. Something most americans will never understand. This car is hand built in Dresden at VW's "transparent factory".Anybody who does not know about automobiles is fast to deny it because it is a VW.
