@chocks01 ROFL! Wonderful! Ahhh, Mr. Levin and his "Funk Fingers"... but may he NEVER shorten his use of this particular touch of magic. Great track, indeed! Heartwarming, uplifting and magnificent - to say the least - THANK YOU, Tottiescot for posting this treasure. Peter Gabriel FOREVER!
This is by far my favorite version of Red Rain. Peter Gabriel is so talented. I want to see him live more than ever after watching this. Thank you so much for posting this awesome video tottiescot.
@Starlitblond , Honey, Budapest in in the cpatiol of the country of Hungary in eastern Europe. Did you ever study geography like maybe in the fifth grade? But, I do agree this concert was awsome.
Tony Levin, Bass,, is using the Funky fingers to create a "percussive" effect. This was originally used for the recording of Big Time, also by Levine.
I saw the final Floud tour and as massive as the shows were, the fact that the music was never overshadowed by the effects led me to believe that that was as far as a show could be taken & nobody would ever get close.
Then I caught this PG tour... And it was real close! Seeing Peter change over the years with this calm, wise professorial sort of vibe. Perfection! The band, as always was stellar & his choice of Blind Boys of Alabama as opener: Genius!
What an amazing song. This is one of those crafted pieces that touches on a personal level in a way that is felt more then can be expressed in words. At least imho !!
I'll second your kudos on Tony ... any idea what those extra long finger thingies he's got on his right hand are? finally - a good close shot at 5:00, where they look like drum sticks (!)
What a great video! It's nice to see a more recent show. Peter Gabriel can still deliver a very powerful and moving performance. Thanks for posting this!
Agree with comments from REELBIGAL, it is a pretty good clip, but doesn't have the "punch" and energy I've seen in other versions (check out the Peter Gabriel "Red Rain" on Letterman version - I feel its much more emotional & lively).
I've caught countless shows since I was a kid in the 70s, some good, some not so good, some very good, and a few truly great. This tour was truly great. That his all-star band would play so flawlessly and inspired isn't so shocking.
But we were sitting 6 rows away at eye level and could see just how much the musicians were enjoying themselves. The laughter & interaction helped create a truly magical show. I've NEVER seen ANY band have so much fun!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this song reminds me of the time there was red kool aid dripping from the ceiling after my brother slipped and fell while carrying a fresh pitcher of it
An incredible piece, I personally think that it lingers far too much in the instrumentals, giving a more jazzy feel to the song. It doesnt suit it. Despite this, the song in the main parts of the song the music is so powerful, it takes your breath away. It really adds something new to the song, and makes me envyous to know I didn't see it live. A true masterpiece. I will ensure it has its chance to shine in the near future.
I think this performance showcased Gabriels voice with some of the best musical talent out there ... Tony Levin and the drummer not sure who he is but appears very disciplined and Peter always has a way of picking great musical talent for his band.
A prior comment mentioned Peter appeared board ... well once you are a master and have mastered an art and stay focused it can sometimes appear as boredom to an observer... it appears to me that Peter takes his music very serious. He keeps maturing .
I beg to differ with the the self proclaimed critics. The audio and video quality of this video is superb. Having seen Gabriel
several times I find this to be truly excellent. Mostly do to the refinements in the arrangement of this rendition. Gabriel's phasing of the melody shows he has grown musically. Also, compare the grand piano patch (in the outro) of this version to the original sythesizer, there is no comparison! This is more refined and pointed.
Man, Tony Levin is really throwing it down on this video...his bass playing is uncomparable...as a bass player, I just cant comprehend how he could use those funk fingers and never miss a note, especially with all of the techniques he uses..I need to feel the strings with my actual fingers. He is truly a bass master.
Although i am amazed by the creativity and skills of Mr. Manu Katche, i do think that sometimes he plays a bit too much in the songs. This version is much more plain and simple, but i think it gives a deep character to the song , where the main leading power is the voice of Mr. Gabriel.
Gabriel is an amazing live performer -- the SO tour was ridiculous it was so good, aurally and visually -- but this is weak. Tony sounds bored, and, sorry, Ged Lynch is not in Tony's league. Listen to him and a truly great drummer, Manu Katche, duel it out on the 'Secret World' version of this same song.
this tour was completely different.I guess Ged Lynch is the drummer here your talking about,he is the perfect drumer for a show like this.he is very disciplined and on the beat since there is tons of sequencing going on so peter needed a drummer who could perfectly play to a click track.
I do notice that Peter sounds just a tiny bit bored here. Seeing Peter Gabriel for the Secret World tour when he was at the top of his game would have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nevertheless, this is still fantastic.
Thanks for posting this. I missed this part of the video when it aired on HD somwhere. It's a long way from Genisis to the Rain falling on one's skin.
Hey, I noticed the drummer, I think, I'll have to watch it again. Peter Gabriel reminds me of my boyfriend, he's always shaving his head because he doesn't like the way his hair looks when it is growing out. Oh, I think it's called balding. I love him either way.
Peter Gabriel is the greatest musician ever born, I get convinced every time I listen to his unique music, which awakens thousand emotions, makes my day........
just got this dvd,the whole thing is amazing from the band to the lighting and of course the songs,it's one of those concerts you wish you'd have been at.peter is unique
