I'm tired of that old chestnut about Van Gogh and Beethoven etc not being understood in their own time.Is this meant to somehow vindicate anyone that is obviously not that good?
@Flowmotion1000 I totally agree. By the way, great painters held Van Gogh in high esteem, and who criticised him never considered him cynical, greedy or talentless. Even Michelangelo was attacked by some of his contemporaries, but nobody ever said he wasn't a serious painter! Please, let's not compare these giants with the likes of Tracy Emin.
@Flowmotion1000 I totally agree with you. As to Manet and Van Gogh, they built on the great traditions of art and extended the boundaries of expression in original and exciting ways. Contemporary art, very specifically, in the person of Duchamp, set out to destroy and eliminate the idea of Art. The idiots that followed, thought he was making a new art and duly took refuge in an 'Art Form' that has no standards and no way to gage whether it is good or bad.

@MrsJosephMerrick Well, you were having a go at Emin for not being able to draw. You said you thought that was important, which is fair enough: craft skills are important in artistic expression.

I think the tent is a great work of art. It makes you think about the moments in your life that were filled with love and closeness to another human being. What deeper purpose could an artwork possibly have? Not all her work is great, but this tent alone is a great idea and just watching this really touched me. There is an arrogance, ignorance and apathy towards modern art which I find very irritating. If you are frustrated with it, feel free to buy a canvas and try to be the next Da Vinci.
Good is where you find it, this kind of self consciously arty stuff i call Institutional High Art. Its supported and propagated by individuals and institutions that are seeking ennoblement, they're looking for something special, something that has value. That's why it has to be priced far beyond its material worth, the money is symbolic of the value they hope to attain. They remind me of the faithful giving money to the cynical money changes to offer up a burnt offering in the temple.
I actually love modern art, but I think the problem (and Emin is part of this) is that the serious art establishment now values gimmicks and "fresh" ideas over basic quality. Modern art from its beginnings with impressionism up to the 1970s always had a sincerity in which the artist took a valid idea and learned to articulate it, which I think is the definition of good art. The more contemporary stuff (YBAs) is way too much about shock value.
@NotNamedJones The problem is that the focus of Art has shifted from being an expression and embodiment of humanity, to a purely commercial exploit of the zeitgeist of the moment. Even the god of the YBAs himself, Damien Hirst, said that his work (and the contemporary art scene in general) is all about marketing, and that meaning and aesthetics are secondary. With this kind of weird--if not downright faulty--logic as the driving force, it's no wonder a lot of so-called modern 'art' is such crap.
This woman's feeble half-hearted and thoughtless concepts embody everything miserably inbred and self-loathing about modern art. Dystopian postmodernism is driving modern society off the ledge. Pathetic.
By slept with it doesn't neccessarily mean sexual. I think she's cleverly played on societies hypocracy. she was in the right place at the right time with the right backers. same as damien hirst not a good artist at all.... a good buissines person. just an old slapper
Fuck off you silly bone idol bitch, everyone knows that she made it through a couple of celebrity contacts. Talentless working class scum bag who is pretending to be elite, no matter how much money she has you cant buy class or talent
She isn't Modern Art and her worth has nothing to do with the worth or validity of anyone else's product. She's just bad. A poor artist. Predictable and under-thought and cynical. Baquiat is great. Serra is superb. She's bad. Not between her and Sistine Chapel or her and DuChamp. And no, art isn't "anything" you say. She's proof of that.
First, Art is for the artist, if the viewer engages with it great, if they do not, so what. Second, Art can be anything( see M Duchamp). Both Manet and Van Gogh were derided in their own lifetimes for not being 'acceptable'. Third, Art is about feelings, what the artist feels about the world about them.
Most comment about contemporary art originates from the tabloid press and half listened to reports. Before you speak go see the work and put it in context. Then have your say.
@TheAndrew633 If Art is simply for the artist, what is the point of putting it into a public arena and inviting the public to engage with it. You are really confirming the view that contemporary art is totally self indulgent. It insults the public by implying that if they don't like or engage with it, then they are lacking in some way. The hubris and stupidity of that widespread idea within the contemporary (non) Art world is breathtaking.
"I could have done that" followed by "Well, you didn't"
What is this, who can grab the mediochre idea first?
Well, I look at the Sistine Chapel and say "I couldn't have done that." That's why I look on it in awe and why I don't look on Emin's work at all if I can help it.
It isn't only a waste of your own brief time to tour cold white "galleries" looking at crap, it shows great disrespect for the great artists whose sublimely beautiful work we could look at instead. Fill your life with beauty
@eltonjohntribute The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel could be called mediocre since the subject matter isn't exactly original. I'm not calling it mediocre myself, but my point is that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. The Sistine Chapel profoundly affects many people, just as the works of Tracey Emin and other modern artists do to others. THAT is the point of art. Now you don't have to like modern art, but to deny that others find it beautiful is ignorant and insular in the extreme.
She's like a horrible kid in a playground having an extended, sweary temper tantrum. Fortunately for her, a lot of idiots are willing to pretend it's good, profound art and give her a lot of money to do it. Pathetic, and risible.
Tracey Emin is crap. What's to respect about drunken sweary scrawls on paper and grotty 'confessional' exhibitionism. She's like some disturbed mental patient who has been fortunate enough to have been awarded a massive Care in the Community grant.
Tracey could flog sand to an Arab perhaps even do a dump on a canvas and convince some ''arty twit'' that it was art .......... oh I forgot she's done that already eg her masterpiece ''My first fag and shit of the day '' She is a Genius ?
Just as a banknote is really only a piece of paper and not worth anything, just as gold has no practical use for most people, yet these things, and postmodern (conceptual) art are really forms of currency. After all, once you have the concept, there is ctually no point in creating the art. To create art also needs to be justified, and if the art is no more different or special than the generic concept then its creation has no value at all. It becomes a banknote.
Tracey is a cheeky little thing, with a funny little crooked smile and loads of charm in a funny way.She would have fitted well into Fagins gang as a female ''Artfull Dodger'' she posseses the gift of fooling naive so called ''educated '' people into believing anything she wants !! She could sell invisible coats to the wealthy and foolish alias Hans Christian Anderson ''The emperors new coat '' ,keep fooling them Tracey hehehe
Tracey Emin first came to public notice in 1997 following a late night live channel 4 discussion show in which she was completely drunk .She abused all her fellow guests on the show ,then suddenly got up and left stating that '' I wanna be with my mum'' and finishing with the words ''I dont give a fuck about it ''
It isn't art. It's a public self-indulgent daydream. Art is where you create something other people want to relate to and be touched by. Emin's work repels people. How is that art?
I don't care who buys the stuff or how much for. They must have too much money to start with and at least TE has found a clever way of relieving them of their excess wealth. You must admire her for that.
I don't like the work or want to see it. It's not really "work" is it? That's an insult to people who work.
YOU dont make the definition of art, dumb fuck, the artists do. You dont create something OTHER people want to relate to. You create art because you need to. Its in your soul and in your blood. A real artist could give a shit if other people "relate" to it or not. If they do and find the information useful, great. If people dont the artist moves on (or already has) to their next project. Fucking grow up and get some REAL education about the creative process and the people who practice it.
You make me laugh. I studied at the same Art College as Tracy Emin and got a first class degree, so don't tell me to get an education. Get one yourself.
So why does art only matter if people can mass produce it and stick it on their walls? Or are you saying that it has to be over a hundred years old to matter? I hate to break it to you but art hasn't remained static.
Conceptual art was started by Duchamps when he entered an inverted urinal into a competition, calling it "fountain" and signing it "R.Mutt."
When it won the competition he said that he realised Art was dead.
Whoever continues the project does so on these terms. The context of art must be its history, either supporting or rejecting it. Conceptual art continues to support Duchamp's self-confessed failure and, accordingly, that of Art, prolongs its own death with work such as Emin / Hirst.
@aaronfromhastings Small problem.........the urinal was rejected from the exhibition and didnt win anything.............but in its context brilliant!!!
Well for a start, something that doesn't look like the result of a naughty schoolgirl getting ratted on lager while her parents are away, trashing the house and scrawling random, illiterate drunken sweary slogans on grotty bits of paper. Some profound things/artists: Shakespeare, Joyce, Dostoyevsky, Lawrence, The Singing Detective, The Pianist, etc
i think her works quite honest, confronting who she is directly. Thats quite a hard thing to d. Mabey you don't like the mediams she uses to express her work with.
we are in a time of contemporary art wether you like it or not. now if you want paintings like that of the classical era's go ahead and do it.
Oh wait you can't. I love how bad your arguments are. 'Thats not art i could do it.' I dont think you can and you can say you can but, you have not therefore it is the most pointless argument ever. i could paint like countless artists but oh, i dont .
Er, actually I do it - I sell my work to people that want to buy it for what it is (not what it 'represents'). I work hard to sell my art, and despise the likes of Emin who earn millions just because they are trendy and hide behind the notion that the general public doesn't understand what they do.
Why isn't it art - and who are you to judge?? And what, exactly, do you mean by 'my kind' - do you know me?? If not, then don't be so bloody judgemental - I commented on Tracy Emin for what she is publicly and for what (little) she offers. "Path to Enlgihtenment" - what a joke. She is a manipulative bullshitter, who caught the attention of a few people with more money than sense - just like Damien Hirst..
No Idon't know you but I know the type of person that can actually say that about the way someone looks - so you have a breed, unfortunately! No she isn't a BAD person, Damien Hirst is more of an idiot than her, her tent was a good idea! Yes the unmade bed was stupid, but hey, we aren't up there so who are we to judge anyway?
I never said she was bad - just that she is ugly and her 'art' stinks - I am entitled to my opinion. We can judge her 'art' in any way we like - it is public property. The unmade bed was a media trick to trigger sensationalist reaction (as I've already said). I have judged her art and consider it worthless. I'm a trained and successful artist myself, by the way, and this is in no way fuelled by jealousy.
Everyone can draw something and call it art, but very few should. Stop seeing art as paint, see it as a language of signs. A language only a few are willing to learn, and even fewer willing to speak.
Whats the emotive content of a tent with sexual partners stiched in it? Instead of painting a picture for you, you're being imaginative for her. In a subtle way, she reversed traditional process. That aint a good thing.
The point is that it isn't just sexual - its a silly trick to sensationalise. Most people assume she means it in the sexual sense, but it includes people she slept with in her childhood ie as in sleepovers and cuddling up to her parents in bed. She knew it would be provocative and people would jump to the wrong conclusion, just as you did, and generate loads of publicity. Pure sensationalism.
However people keep saying, "yer i could have pissed in a bed"
as 'how fast we burn' sai yes but you didn't
Moreover if you did, why?
Anyone can piss in a bed but its the reason that is art, she lay in her bed for days without moving because she was depressed. Her art is increadiably thoughtful but very subtle.
I used kantian maxims and predicted the date artists couldn't draw and paint anymore, let alone use imagination.
What places her above someone using traditional media to make awesome things? There's depressed people everyday who don't feel the nagging need for attention, yet she "made it incredibly thoughtful but subtle".
I know "the message". It's shallow, you can't relate to it, YOUR imagination does the job for her. Shes a celebrity, like paris hilton.
so if anyone can do it why havn't you done it its not just about skill its about the idea and the thoughts behind it yes anyone can piss on a bed but that dint make it art there has to be a thought process along with it they havnt 'hijacked' art at all art has changed throught the ages you say that not everyone can produce work like Turner etc. i bet you they dont produce all there work they come up with the idea and tell some one to do it so is that therefore there good art or there good idea?
That's bullshit. I haven't done it because I'd be embarrassed & ashamed to churn out that crap. I was doing that sort of hamfisted junk at infants school. It's deeply pathetic & anyone who think's it's art is extremely misguided.
Everyone CAN paint the Mona Lisa, with considerable practice and an understanding of rennaissance techniques anyone CAN paint it , because all it is is ugly shallow beauty. Mainly of the ugly brown type. Now not everything is great art to everyone, but everything IS art. To me the Mona Lisa is a glorified crafts project, but to some like you it is the pinnacle of art. For me that is Stella or Rothko.
Don't be silly. Not everyone could paint the Mona Lisa & if they could, it'd take a years of practice. Pissing the bed like Tracy Emin is within everyone's capability with zero amount of practice. You've been brainwashed by the luvies, mate
Thats just it isn't it? Everyone CAN do art. To elevate art to something that only a select few can do, makes it a less universal experience for all. You are looking to artists to create things that you can't. Why should that matter in the grand scheme of things? I mean if a child paints a painting of his/her parents and one of them is depicted as an evil monster it IS art in the sense that it expresses human fears and trauma. But according to you since "anyone" could do it it isn't art. Silly!
No you're being silly. If a pissed bed is art, then everything is art. A wiped arse, a flat tyre, a broken tooth, dropped litter. You clearly don't have the ability to seperate art from mindless expression.
To chandru 1103 ,To compare Tracey Emin to ''Leonardo Da Vinci'' the genius painter ,scientist ,inventor etc of the middle ages just shows how gullible some people can be in their statements and judgements !!
Ok, I'll paint a fire extinguisher green & place it next to a Mars Bar & a burning candle & I'll call it 'The conflict of God & his inner thoughts'. I want 500 grand for it. Cash please!
People like Emin aren't artists, they're just exhibitionists. Anyone can be an exhibitionist but not everyone can be an artist. These people have hijacked art.
True. However I like Tracey she is interesting. Exhibition has become art which is a shame. It take years of work to be a great sculptor or painter. Tracey has talent but it is not Vermeer.
I don't think she has a shred of talent. Anyone can do everything that she does but no many people can produce work like Turner, Franz Marc & Chuck Close etc. Emin is just a tabloid luvvie. He's right, they've hijacked art.
Look at her movie 'Top Spot' and how similar, very similar, the story is to a best selling 2002 local novel by Karen Louise Taylor titled VIRGINITY "is that it?" Now a 2009 BAFTA submitted movie is that it? Directed by Lord Philip Brett Sinclair
HOW CAN PEOPLE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY??? HOW IS THIS FAMOUS??? HOW??? That painting was not even a painting. It was a smudge. It was a circle with poo next to it. OPEN YOUR EYES, PEOPLE. SHE'S RIPPING YOU OFF!!
You're completely missing it... completely. What is considered art changes throughout the ages. Take the impressionists - people had the similar ideas as you on their paintings when they were first exhibited, as in they thought they were shit, but that view point changed - and when we look back now we see that impressionism was an artistic movement. People seem to be in an awful rush to label something art or not. Makes me feel sick.
Thank you kindly. For once someone shovels a good art history reference right into the faces of the nay-sayers. If people would just stop looking at things to tell whether they are "art" and started looking at the works on the basis of success of the work to convey its message than Contemporary work would be more valued by the general public.
Conveying a message isn't difficult. It isn't art either. Since when has art been solely about making a statement anyway? I'm sorry but infant school collage & a pissed bed isn't art. You've just been brainwashed by the luvies.
Tracey is a twat. I realized that when I saw a picture she'd drawn of her gash from behind. That's true class. She's a true lady. That tent is like something a high school would do as a joke. It's shit - she must know someone important - her work is worthless shit. She's f***ing someone important in the art world.
ive pissed off artists in the past :) once went to put up a painting for a show! the theme was getting reactions out of people :) so I owned everyone! I painted a matchstick man on a canvas in like 2 secs! handed it over! artists took offense :) said I was not taking it serious! my response was that I casued more of a reaction than any of the crap other people had, didnt need to try :) BUT!! I got rejected!! :) I laughed
I'm an artist! went to uni etc! and I always put a middle finger up at this shit!! always refused to go to see Turner Prize bollocks!! Ive met artist who come up with this type of crap and then have some big story behind it!! talk to others like their so above everyone? as for me :) I don't sell myself out to be an attention seeking cheap artist! thats going to get the media all crazed!! desperate art isn't my thing :)
I hate talentless people who believe they're talented only because they've been plucked out of obscurity by a handful of fat-bellied suits needing to champion a few graduate fart students so as to justify the huge arts funding seeking media attention so as to perpetuate more funding for a symbiotic subvention of crap soup hello major exterminate exterminate! I am a Dalek!
I don't understnd why everyone nowadays is a cynic. Why the fuck do people feel the need to put art in a box. Art is expression, this is her expression. It doesn't HAVE to be a boring landscape painted with fine brushstrokes that took a bajillion hours to make, It's anythjing that evokes emotion. And for her, this does. And to UltraBeans, she already said it wasn't all sexual it was about INTIMACY. Ignorant knob end. Done :) Xxxx
How do you know this is her expression, though? I'll go "conspiracy-theory" on you, and say how do you know that Tracy Emins is not just a really good confidence trickster?
-Since what she's doing inhabits no talent whatsoever. It may evoke emotions in her audience, true, but in terms of artistic accomplishment-she has none.
I don't think it'd be hard at all to pretend this. There've been so many conmen in the art world, it's not even funny. And It's not difficult to lie or act.
Each to their own, of course. I can also understand why people respect her. But to me, art will always have to have that aspect of manual dexterity. Even in the performing arts. If you're watching ballet & some guy stumbles on stage & does a forward roll-you wouldn't exactly compliment him on his dance skills. Same with this kind of art.
not all people enjoy sentimental or melodramatic art. This is fine. I love it. It takes a girl back to the sexual angst of being a 14 year old girl who was a little too curious. That's what I feel when I look at her stuff. Her work has nothing to do with talent really, but with feeling.
all these fellas she shaged must be blind right, she is a dog,no sorry if i had a dog that looked like her i would have the poor thing put to sleep.

@TheAndrew633 these people have lost their idea of beauty, there must be beauty in everything. even in horrific things beauty is an ideal
vitaminD11 2 months ago

Fill your life with beauty
eltonjohntribute 1 year ago
@eltonjohntribute The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel could be called mediocre since the subject matter isn't exactly original. I'm not calling it mediocre myself, but my point is that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. The Sistine Chapel profoundly affects many people, just as the works of Tracey Emin and other modern artists do to others. THAT is the point of art. Now you don't have to like modern art, but to deny that others find it beautiful is ignorant and insular in the extreme.

That's an insult to people who work.
eltonjohntribute 2 years ago
YOU dont make the definition of art, dumb fuck, the artists do. You dont create something OTHER people want to relate to. You create art because you need to. Its in your soul and in your blood. A real artist could give a shit if other people "relate" to it or not. If they do and find the information useful, great. If people dont the artist moves on (or already has) to their next project. Fucking grow up and get some REAL education about the creative process and the people who practice it.

"Emin's work repels people. How is that art?" Well that seems to be your point of veiw but you don't speak for everyone.
almanacofsleep 2 years ago
Then let me be blunt.
Van Gogh and Monet lived more than a century ago and people have copies of their paintings on their walls to this day.
Or how about the 2000 year old Lacoon sculpture? No-one can see this and not be awed by it.
I have "Starry Night" right here by my desk. Show me one person who has a photo of Emin's tent on their wall, or who would even want that.
aaronfromhastings 2 years ago
So why does art only matter if people can mass produce it and stick it on their walls? Or are you saying that it has to be over a hundred years old to matter? I hate to break it to you but art hasn't remained static.
almanacofsleep 2 years ago
Conceptual art was started by Duchamps when he entered an inverted urinal into a competition, calling it "fountain" and signing it "R.Mutt."
When it won the competition he said that he realised Art was dead.
Whoever continues the project does so on these terms. The context of art must be its history, either supporting or rejecting it. Conceptual art continues to support Duchamp's self-confessed failure and, accordingly, that of Art, prolongs its own death with work such as Emin / Hirst.
aaronfromhastings 2 years ago
@aaronfromhastings Small problem.........the urinal was rejected from the exhibition and didnt win anything.............but in its context brilliant!!!

we are in a time of contemporary art wether you like it or not. now if you want paintings like that of the classical era's go ahead and do it.
Oh wait you can't. I love how bad your arguments are. 'Thats not art i could do it.' I dont think you can and you can say you can but, you have not therefore it is the most pointless argument ever. i could paint like countless artists but oh, i dont .
stew102030 2 years ago
Er, actually I do it - I sell my work to people that want to buy it for what it is (not what it 'represents'). I work hard to sell my art, and despise the likes of Emin who earn millions just because they are trendy and hide behind the notion that the general public doesn't understand what they do.

no, but the difference is is that she's different to your kind she is on a path to enlightenment, you however have a long long way.
IndieRockerJadiee 2 years ago
Why isn't it art - and who are you to judge?? And what, exactly, do you mean by 'my kind' - do you know me?? If not, then don't be so bloody judgemental - I commented on Tracy Emin for what she is publicly and for what (little) she offers. "Path to Enlgihtenment" - what a joke. She is a manipulative bullshitter, who caught the attention of a few people with more money than sense - just like Damien Hirst..
artocrat2009 2 years ago
No Idon't know you but I know the type of person that can actually say that about the way someone looks - so you have a breed, unfortunately! No she isn't a BAD person, Damien Hirst is more of an idiot than her, her tent was a good idea! Yes the unmade bed was stupid, but hey, we aren't up there so who are we to judge anyway?
IndieRockerJadiee 2 years ago

That aint a good thing.
kazinscky 2 years ago
The point is that it isn't just sexual - its a silly trick to sensationalise. Most people assume she means it in the sexual sense, but it includes people she slept with in her childhood ie as in sleepovers and cuddling up to her parents in bed. She knew it would be provocative and people would jump to the wrong conclusion, just as you did, and generate loads of publicity. Pure sensationalism.
artocrat2009 2 years ago
@kazinscky Sleeping partners...........not sexual partners!!!!
TheAndrew633 1 month ago
Obviously to subtle for you to notice, or pay attention too.
stew102030 2 years ago
You've got your 'to' and 'too' confused.
It isn't subtle, it's talentless garbage. Emin is nothing but a crass drunkard. She certainly isn't an artist.
moodini99 2 years ago
explain what is art though?
it is a personnal responce to something right
one mans rubbish is another mans gold
so art is or is not depending on a person.
However people keep saying, "yer i could have pissed in a bed"
as 'how fast we burn' sai yes but you didn't
Moreover if you did, why?
Anyone can piss in a bed but its the reason that is art, she lay in her bed for days without moving because she was depressed. Her art is increadiably thoughtful but very subtle.
stew102030 2 years ago
I used kantian maxims and predicted the date artists couldn't draw and paint anymore, let alone use imagination.
What places her above someone using traditional media to make awesome things? There's depressed people everyday who don't feel the nagging need for attention, yet she "made it incredibly thoughtful but subtle".
I know "the message". It's shallow, you can't relate to it, YOUR imagination does the job for her. Shes a celebrity, like paris hilton.
Choose your next words carefully.

Good art is work that takes skill to achieve. Anyone can piss the bed but not everyone can paint the Mona Lisa.
digbycurrents 2 years ago
Everyone CAN paint the Mona Lisa, with considerable practice and an understanding of rennaissance techniques anyone CAN paint it , because all it is is ugly shallow beauty. Mainly of the ugly brown type. Now not everything is great art to everyone, but everything IS art. To me the Mona Lisa is a glorified crafts project, but to some like you it is the pinnacle of art. For me that is Stella or Rothko.
chandru1103 2 years ago
Don't be silly. Not everyone could paint the Mona Lisa & if they could, it'd take a years of practice. Pissing the bed like Tracy Emin is within everyone's capability with zero amount of practice. You've been brainwashed by the luvies, mate
digbycurrents 2 years ago
Thats just it isn't it? Everyone CAN do art. To elevate art to something that only a select few can do, makes it a less universal experience for all. You are looking to artists to create things that you can't. Why should that matter in the grand scheme of things? I mean if a child paints a painting of his/her parents and one of them is depicted as an evil monster it IS art in the sense that it expresses human fears and trauma. But according to you since "anyone" could do it it isn't art. Silly!
chandru1103 2 years ago
No you're being silly. If a pissed bed is art, then everything is art. A wiped arse, a flat tyre, a broken tooth, dropped litter. You clearly don't have the ability to seperate art from mindless expression.

-Since what she's doing inhabits no talent whatsoever. It may evoke emotions in her audience, true, but in terms of artistic accomplishment-she has none.
flipmanja 3 years ago
Like i said everyone's a cynic.
Don't you believe it would be hard to pretend all of this? Because maybe it isn't to your taste, but it has soul, even if only to her.
And to fake that? well she must be an incredibly intelligent woman, and one very good actress.
She has integrity, i'm not sure what you mean by accomplishment because as far as i'm concerned to has.
But ahh well. I can understand why people dont respect it, get it or even like it. But it evokes reaction Thats what it's about.
MaddiMcMurray 3 years ago
I don't think it'd be hard at all to pretend this. There've been so many conmen in the art world, it's not even funny. And It's not difficult to lie or act.
Each to their own, of course. I can also understand why people respect her. But to me, art will always have to have that aspect of manual dexterity. Even in the performing arts. If you're watching ballet & some guy stumbles on stage & does a forward roll-you wouldn't exactly compliment him on his dance skills. Same with this kind of art.
