Interestng video....never the less, somewhat misleading if we take the man at his word...'Barren and poor'????......forgetting the latter for a moment, who could ever describe Ireland as barren, even as he is taking pictures of a lush and verdant valley? And 'untouched'? Perhaps compared to an urban environment but the traces of people past and present are everywhere, fields, fences, walls. Who does he think tends the sheep? Ireland is beautiful but it is not Eden!
Thanks for your comments, and fair points made. You are right, when Helnwein was commenting on a barren landscape, we saw exact opposite. However, we can all be limited by language at times. Perhaps the comment could be about the landscape the author inhabits.
@Thelittleonesaid Barren is actually a mis-translation by whoever did the subtitles. He uses the German word "karg" which correctly translates into "scraggy" or "sparse".
Wonderful watching this, I cycled around Cork and Kerry back in 1979, and these would be my thoughts, the same as spoken in the video. afterwards I spent the next few years painting landscapes.
wow this is great....Cyril looks like Robert Plant in song remains the same.

@Thelittleonesaid
"Untouched" should be correctly translated as "unspoiled" here(which is what Helnwein actually means).

That is interesting to hear that you found the landscape inspirational as well.
