THIS IS NOT JAZZ!! There is not any "jazzy" approach to that tune. because the setup looks like a typical jazz guitar trio, it doesn't mean that it actually is. Alex could be a very good metal guitarist indeed, but he has not at all jazz phrasing in his improvisation. it's just heavy metal licks with a clean sound. no jazzy reharmonisation either on the tune.
So how someone calls it a jazz version of fade to black? the drumming again is great but too much. Jazz drummers don't play like that. The whole thing is just a heavy metal tune played with clean sound. That's all. Surely THIS IS NOT JAZZ!
Not even close to jazz fusion. He does "jazzy" versions of rock/metal songs when he is not shredding w/Testament. Sometimes his covers of classics are unrecognizable. This is not one of his better attempts and the cameraman sucks balls. What is w/the drummer? Someone one needs to fuse your skull back together. Jazz fusion was defined in the late 60s and 70's and was pioneered by Mclaughlin, DiMeola, Cobham and the like.
@eqsmooth They are "unrecognizable" because there are long passages of improvisation and rhythm alterations to the original arrangements of the songs. I'm well aware of Alex Skolnick's other musical ventures, much like most people who enjoy this project I'd assume. I know that this is obviously not from the original jazz fusion generation and the reason the "cameraman" isn't professional is because this isnt a hired cameraman, but clearly some guy just recording on his handheld camera.
@eqsmooth So you go from being close-minded and snobbish to downright antisemitic? You don't seem to be of any worth when it comes to defending your point of view...
@JaketheSnakeESP Anti-semitic? WTF? Let's leave it here. You are losing your mind. I love Skolnick, this particular performance just isn't very good. he's entitled to have a bad day and so are you. On the other hand, Jeff Beck never has a bad day. Give him a listen.
@eqsmooth I thought you were referencing the fact that Gene Simmons is Jewish with the "take all your money" comment. My mistake. Jeff Beck is amazing, and I'm not quite sure why changing the subject matter from the genre that AST plays to Al's particular performance here, but you're right. Let's just leave it here.
@eqsmooth That's because this song is by Metallica and Metallica sucks. So what more can you do from said crappy band? Alex is one of the best for sure that Metal and jazz have to offer.
@eqsmooth Again, just because this isn't from the original group of musicians including DeMeola doesn't mean that it isn't "real jazz fusion", because Skolnick clearly didn't begin this trio in the 60s. No need to be such a critical douche because this isn't jazz fusion as you know it.
@JaketheSnakeESP i totally disagree my friend. Fusion, in the true sense of this style that was born in the 60s and became more popular in the 70s, was a rock sound with a jazz approach, which means improvisation, rhythmical aspects like syncopation and "jazzy" harmony, a lot of times not typical functional harmony that we find in jazz standards, but more modern "colorful" harmony...
...And let's say that there is a rock sound in Alex's video, which i don't listen it anyway, but for sure there is NO "jazzy" approach. NOT FUSION! Allow me to say that you don't know the things so well, otherwise you wouldn't have replied like that. Again to my opinion, it's a failed attempt of a rock-metal guitarist to sound "jazzy". Whoever knows what jazz is, and better whoever actually plays jazz will agree with that... Keep on playing! :)
@PanosIliou I don't feel strongly enough about it to keep arguing, lol. Jazz or not, I like Alex Skolnick's stuff (although this isn't his best work with AST in my opinion).
I'm just glad you voiced your opinion respectfully, haha
@c197373 It's Jazz dude, when he left Testament for a bit he learned like all theory :P and became a jazz guitarist now he does both, listen to Formation Of Damnation

@PanosIliou It's jazz fusion... a little bit of rock combined with a little bit of jazz to make something similar, yet different. Don't be a snob...

Keep practicing. Perhaps someday Gene Simmons will discover you and steal any money you might have left in the bank.
