Many people go on the Dr. Phil show feel like they are victims or beaten down because Dr. Phil takes sides. That's not what psychologists are suppose to do either. Psychologists are suppose to mediate and help resolve issues not take sides.

@steffen54321 Actually, Phil did a great job with that brain tumor comeback. You don't have to go through a certain "behavior" to know about it. If that's the case you might as well fire the majority of criminal analysts, psychiatrists, and human development researchers, because apparently, according to Mr. Thomas there, they would have no idea how to handle behaviors of which they've never had to overcome.

And it's exactly as you spell it. Key sentence, "know about it," not "know it." A tumor's a tumor. While every person's psyche is different, we're mostly the same concerning our physical layout. Thomas is unique "just like everyone else," and is the only one to truly know how he feels.
I don't agree with Thomas when he says he wouldn't know (anything) about it because he hasn't overcome it though.

@billhicks8 Can that be backed with solid fact? The scientific method experts use nowadays are based around the same method thats been around for decades. You see an illness, test it, diagnose it. If what you say is true then little to no medication, treatments, or counseling can be justified whatsoever, but that isn't the case.

'Solid fact' is actually something that evades clinical psychology quite often, otherwise it's tentative, and descriptive rather prescriptive at best.

One of the first things that needs to be taken into account is the placebo effect of course, and if an accusation of such is levelled in relation to psychology and it's effectiveness, especially regarding the 'talk therapy' sessions we are to regard as the distinction here when thinking of 'Dr.Phil' therapy, then I think we can see the level of subjectivity at play here rather than the mocking assertion that some objective, discerning treatment is composite in this

I think Thomas should of kept his mouth shut, seen what Dr. Phil would say and then accepted the help Dr. Phil would give him to help this behavioral problem, and not interrupted the process trying to be a smart guy. He went on the show to get help and not look like the hero standing up to the guy you guys all hate.

Especially with the Dr. Phil fans following everything what Dr. Phil says because it does get a little annoying when the crowd claps for him too often. He isn't always 100% right all the time. But in this video, he was trying to help Thomas but at the start, Thomas wasn't letting him.

i'm not a Dr Phil fan by any means but he's right in this instance, he doesn't need to experience the disorder in order to treat it. He has to experience to understand the embarassment or what it feels like to have that disorder, however he doesn't need to experience it to understand the psychological mechanisms that trigger the disorder and correct those mechanisms. Of course i don't think Dr Phil is qualified to do that cause he is a Lehman psychologist but still the point he makes is right.
