  • I don't think this is something the girls want to do. I think they do it because it is a tradition, like footbinding in china. It even showed how it dug into the neck. It may not be painful but it must be uncomfortable. Also, it forces the head to be up so they can't look down all the way unless bent over. I think it's beautiful, but it certainly doesn't look comfortable and I would not sacrifice the movement of my neck for this.

  • this is one of the few cultural modifications i think look beautiful. though it looks a little strange, i love the way the long neck looks

  • It's insane how beauty changes when you look at other cultures.

This is one of the less painful things i have seen done in the name of beauty.

  • omg arbiter.

  • Some of these commentors... Did you even watch the whole video? Obviously it is not painful to any of the women you see, nor is it causing this girl harm to remove the rings.

Compared to the ridiculous extremes that some Western women go to to fit our culture's view of beauty, this is nothing. It certainly looks less painful than having your shins broken and stretched to gain a couple extra inches in height, and less dangerous than botox.

  • I think this is cool, I always wanted to have them

  • Crazy, many so-called "American" traditions are foreign in origin. The only real, true American traditions are those of Native people like myself. I consider some Euro-American customs odd--like the boring appearances they think look good, being tall and thin as being perfect, and the emphasis on tan skin but light hair (that makes no sense to me.) The tall and thin issue especially drives so many American girls to starve themselves, so don't tell me Euro-Americans don't have evil ways.

  • to danagasta1 - Most American traditions that are real American traditions - not the few ones that came here after immigrants start running here - but the ones that development by those who built America that's why we are called AMERICA! But some crazy demonic traditions by whites in America was white women doing horrible things to make their waist line too small they even start having ribs taking out to get those small waist - but those too small waists are ugly!

  • the only bad thing is that the united states is actually in debt with many countries and has aid from so many other.....we dont have the crazy ass customs but we have the debt........

  • E.T PHoNe HoMe

  • can their neck grow lyk a giraffe's,,,???

  • Yup...What i said is true.

In Thailand, Women use those rings to show beauty and because its their culture, there is also one reason they use those rings. When a woman is married, they cannot cheat on their husbands. If they do, as a punishment, Their husbands have the right to remove the rings. After a while, Their necks cant hold any longer and they break cuz they it cant hold the weight of their heads. The woman will suffocate and die.

I asked my teacher, and my stepfather. Its true...

  • its looks so painful, omg

  • i think wearing that make them look ugly.

  • providing the women are 100% making the choice to wear these rings I don't see the problem.

Its no different to body modifications we have in the western world to increase beauty- like breat augmentation etc.

However if this is some form of female oppression I would generally be against it. The whole thing about women dying because their rings were removed is rubbish. If the girl took her rings off for that video I presume she has the right to choose to do so, and simply chooses to wear them.

  • @kittysparkleeyes but the way that some people are put to obsessions about their bodies caused mainly by the media in the western world is also some form of oppression

  • chinese girl use to wear shoes that is small size ,but have been abolished

  • I'm aware of the small shoes that chinese girls use to have to wear, but that was still part of the culture. It wasn't done to torture the girls and in many cases the girls wanted to do it because smaller feet were more attractive. While these women do suffer, to them it was socially acceptable.

  • the culture torture people ,the girl cry you know when they grow older as it is more painful,

    it crush the bone.

i know because i am chinese and i see the movie they tell the story

they dont love it but it have been train from their mind that they have to wear ,they is no objection

  • this is hell

    where is human right

  • You should look up something called cultural relativism. This is no more strange to them as an American males circumcision is to us. You can't judge other peoples cultures based on our own western culture.

  • i am not saying i am not respect that "neck culture"

but what is suffering to them have to be stop and abolish cause too cruel

just as the chinese trandition short leg have been abolish

this is human right , not about culture anymore

  • weird

  • I think the rings are beautiful, too bad that it deforms the body though.

Corsets, Foot-binding, High heeled shoes. Almost every society has some sort of idea of beauty that affects the Woman, and it usually affects them painfully or unconfortably. Wierd uh?

  • DivineReaper: My guess is you come from a people who don't express or preserve traditions. That's why society is the way it is--because people have no sense of who they are anymore. Just one giant melting pot.

  • Ya, actually she seems ok. But the scar and the pain from the ring's weight... aw.

Not like this tradition have to be abolished or something, it's a cultural heritage anyway. Let it life away.

  • she looks pretty

  • the only thing that gets me is that it looks painfulllllllllll

  • You should be more open minded. There not retards, its tradition, there customs. If you cant handle difference in the world, then dont watch and stay tightly shut in your small confine box.

  • assholle your a dick.i know its a tradition i know.but they are waisting there life doing stupid thing becuase their granfather did it i mean ur just waisting ur life doingsomthing that is never supost to be done.for what reason.there is no reason behind it if u think hard ull know what am saying its just not right to waist ur life doing something because ur father did.its like a sado counting numbers all his life because his grandfather did aswell.get it.its basicly the same.there is no perpes

  • sigh how many curses and words did you spell wrong?

If your going to try and make a point, the least you can do is intelligently reply instead of just sinking yourself even more. How are they waisting there life because of something they believe in? In life we learn from are parents, are culture, are surroundings. That is why they do it, because for them its a way of life, not something to be looked down upon. You find it "stupid" because you simply are not custom to it.

  • Retard i can only write 500 word so i had to shorten thing to make it fit.... I know what you mean and i know they do it because they think thats somekind of special thing or tradition. and i dont care i just wrote a comment based on my owen opinion so if you think that way thats fine by me....i can't be bothered to argue with you....so ceya^^

  • A heads up I'm not arguing, I'm stating my opinion same as yourself. Your the one with the useless name calling, wow as if retardation is something to joke about. Your the one saying everything is stupid, and if you were trying to save up space you wouldn't write own, (owen). I dont believe in arguing on youtube, I simply state my beliefs and see how other people feel about it. Not name call, or claim what others are doing is stupid. If you read what I wrote, you would see nothing is offensive.

  • dude when i said i cant be bothered to argue i actually ment to talk to you anymore.and if you think stupit its offensive well you have some kind of problem because for me stupit doesn't even begin to tell me what offensive is...and please dont writte back.... and if u have a problem with my spelling, its just i dont concentrate for 3 hours cheking my spelling and seeing whats wrong...

  • I think they're Beautifl.

  • A little scaring... that's all? I thought it would be some awful skeletal deformity.

  • No, in this case they're just showing what it's like..

  • That's one way of getting taller.

  • i'm sorry but i thought they weren't allowed to take them off?

(except for the circumstances that the video stated)

  • The rings don't actually stretch the neck, it pushes the shoulders down, giving them the 'longer' neck appearance.

  • So.. I guess she was caught commiting adultury? Why she took it off? She is cute though.

  • if she is caught doing adultury she would've been seen as a outcast. Not something to be happy for.

  • yup fat ass

  • they would think you're tradition is terrible

  • Thats amazing: I expected her neck to be really skinny and floppy:) It doesnt actually stretch the neck: the rings push the collarbones and shoulders down, making the neck appear longer.

  • another example of the weak character and attitudes of women in some countries that allow men to dominate them and rule them...

    SAD

  • Very sad, you have reason

  • The Karen are matriarchal. In other words, the women are the heads of the families, not the men. You're entirely wrong.

  • desert arabs do it it's called jelqing (sp?) I downloaded the 'how-to' info once, but never tried. It's something handed down freom father to son

  • oh dude why did you look for it in first place?

  • This is just one view of another culture and i dont feel bad or sad for the girls and women that do this, because its an expression of beauty to there people and apart of their culture. People outside of it may think that its cruel but people have different views when they are not apart of the culture and have a negative view sometimes. Its just apart of their way of life and culture.I respect these people

  • it's not safe to take it off...

  • no and as i know now they are told of the conqucences of starting the process. I hvae nothing against it, i dont personally take a great liking but it is their unquie way they just need to know what they are actually doing to themselves physically.

  • my dad needs one of those. he barely has a neck

  • haha my sister needs some too

  • what the F seriously.

  • (why)tf is "nudity" under the tags?

  • Because...it showed her neck!! :P

  • interesting

  • hehehe

  • wow

  • furchtbar, das erinnert mich an die bandaierten verkrueppelten fuesse!

  • her neck looks nicer without.

  • Great. So interesting!!

  • that must be painful

  • having your neck gouged is pretty much suffering to anyone, that doesnt mean its negative. The whole experience over all might not be suffering, but getting scars like that probably is

  • there wasnt any change

  • I agree that to us it might look like suffering, but as long as she interprets them as not, we can only respect her culture thus.

  • SHE LOOKS BETTER WITHOUT THEM.

  • I think she looks nice with them as well.

  • I think she does too, she's pretty either way

  • Yes she is pretty - I always thought that these women actually had their necks broken so it would stretch - thankfully I was wrong!

  • interesting but i think it's wrong for it to be labelled "suffering"..coz it's their culture and it's not suffering to them.

  • i agree

  • Suffering is suffering, no matter the culture. However, I don't think this looks like much more suffering than having to wax your legs every 2 weeks, pluck eyebrows, or even wax your upper lip, which is what we do in our culture.

  • Spiderofdoom, I totally agree! Look around you everyone, welcome to an age of Breast implants and reductions, lyposuction , Penis enlargement Pills , Piercings, and Plastic surgery. What right have we to judge them?

Altogether I think the Human race itself is seriously wrong, no woman or man is ever comfortable with who they are or the skin we're in.

  • People in all cultures suffer for "beauty" (in the eyes of beholders).

I'm sure some cultures wonder why some women torture their feet with high heels, inject toxines into their face, and starve themselves half dead to look thin.

  • I can't think of the name, but I know in one culture that sees obesity as beautiful and thinness as...replusive. XD

  • i know that exists in africa well in some parts atleasts but now a days i hear the mindset is also dying there. I remember learning that, i forget the name of the country in africa they were speaking about specifically

  • just add its not really obesity but rather bigger woman, they look for a woman with child birthing hips.

  • Ouch. :/
