  • That's one terrific layout. Great video, too.

  • dear santa...

  • maybe because they cant pronounce "sheboygan"?

  • The 18 dislikes are only jealous cause they may not play with it.

  • .... ok i really want that 4-8-2 (the steam engine to the non railfan)

  • can i run a dcc train on a dc layout

  • 18 people cant build a model train

  • why are there 18 dislikes?

  • Your model buildings, esp. the church, are great. Are they all scratch built?

  • This is a great layout.

  • Quite a nice layout. I had dreams of building an HO railroad layout when my dad got our first HO train back in the late 80's. Now that I've got half a basement to work with, I may just work on it little by little. Sure it's fun when it's complete, but the real fun is using your imagination and ideas and watching your layout grow to your liking.

  • This video is a lie. Those trains are clearly fake.

  • I originally saw this layout in Model Railroader and I knew I wanted to visit it one day. I love the concept and the period, as well as the RR. Great job!

  • AWESOME

  • awesome layout,I know a guy who has the whole basement filled with trains, all computer controlled.....even has a drive-in movie theater, using a small lcd screen, hooked to a dvd player.......really great ideas......I could watch his trains for hours......most of his buildings are hand built.......he has the re$ources to do this though.

  • @jeepers2655 You should get pictures of that drive-in.

  • @jeepers2655 That drive-in theater idea is awesome! You should get some pictures or a video of his layout.

  • were is this located ????

  • Cooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllll

  • Awesome !!!

  • You spend 40 hours a week on this train layout?

  • @Trolleymoose Yeah!!! I wish I could invest 40 hours a week on my layout!!!! LOL!!!! I'm lucky to get 2!!!

  • There are two things that strike me about this train set:

A] Much thought was put into the layout. It looks like a real town. Some hobbyists just throw cheap looking buildings that don't go with each other all over their layouts, but not this layout. It looks real. In fact, this layout is so realistic that it looks museum quality.

B] The trains have a dusty weathered look that makes them look more realistic. Trains are supposed to be dirty, not have a clean, shining, out of the box look.

  • That is awesome! I love that roundhouse or turntable. The steam locomotive is great and the old building with the "Carillon"sign on the wall! I love weathered old buildings!

  • cool but wheres the graffiti.

  • @vespaT27 He says right at the start that its a model of the railroad from 1954. Graffiti really wasn't such a problem back then...

  • whoa, that's so awesome

  • didn't say how many years it took to get to that level.. most great ones in the past took on average 10 years or more. Very nice though, I like it, I would suggest drapery below to hide the benchwork, just me I guess.

  • Fantastic.

  • It truly is a 1954 setting - why? - cause at 2:03 the red signal lights are not working yet the car has still stopped - probably because in 1954 the driver would have looked for trains.

  • @gaming0wiz does ur dad have money to made a big shed so u can make one in it? or on ur room ceiling?

  • wow just wow and to think i had a nice layout!!!

  • Great job! Keep it going.

  • im 14 and i want to get into it my friends say its lame mainly cause im a skater but once they see how cool it is they change thier minds

  • I really like you video. I am just getting into the hobby and I am setting up kind of a long set up for me I think. My set up is about 16 feet long and 8 feet across. total of about 65 + track and I want to use DCC. Can you give me any idea of what kind of transformer I would need to operate that much of a layout. Thank you

  • @16887593 I can. Contact us at Roger's Railroad Junction on Youtube. We have monthly updates you'll get if you Subscribe to our channel. Let me know if you want info, contact me in my in-box and I'll answer any questions you have.

  • I love the lake tap bar and Old Style sign at the 1:13 mark. Great stuff.

  • great railroad. Thanks for sharing.

  • Excellent model work.

  • great layout!

  • This guy kinda wants me to start a new hobby =)

  • Great! It's a very nice movie!

  • Did u say u try to put in "40 hrs a wk down" with the trains? When do u work? I like trains and hobbies too!

  • great model railway system

  • Kids should into modeling!

  • "F" = Fantastic!!!

  • very nice i think your layout was published in model railroader magazine

  • Nice Layout Dude! Way to Go! We are the Cedar Valley Model Railroad Club and we just want to say gud job at building this spectacular layout. Great Job! :)

  • that's really something special! superb!

  • really neat layout...takes me back to my childhood.

  • i love model railroading

  • see how the train light blinks is that normal

    or what

    what controller do u use

and how do u get the track so straight cause i cant

  • @jmsschooner - He's using DCC (Digital Command & Control), just google it. If you want to get your track straight try placing a ruler or yard stick along the rail before you tack it down.

  • @jmsschooner - the "blinking light" simulates the gyrating beacon used on many diesels during the "first-generation" era. Google "Mars Light" or "Gyralight".

  • 40 hours a week? That might be a little too much for me.

  • Do you contact movie set contractors... as I really see the ART you've poured into this... and would wish you the very best in the future of your SET!!... please contact me for more information on promoting your designs. moneymax3001 all oer de net. google it..

  • oh my god thats what i wish i could have.i just have a 4 by 8 sheet of plie wood w/ a figure 8

  • nice layout your dad should really be proud of you

  • I used to be into that stuff, but I kinda got out of it since its so exspensive. But I stll want too. Maybe I can convine my dad to let me covert the upper side of our barn into one!

  • Very impressive !! Nice to see the trains running at a realistic speed.

  • Hmm...Let see, you spend 40 hours a week railroading. You work another 40 hours a week, and sleep 56 hours per week. Holy Cow! You have almost no time to do anything else. Better cut back model roading a bit., or stop eating or going to the bathroom.

  • @Trolleymoose Really? A whole 56 hours a week sleeping? Who the hell are you people? I am lucky if I get to sleep 35 hours a week myself. You must have a sugardaddy Trolleymouse.

  • AWESOME Layout!!!! Your viewers might enjoy seeing the latest in DCC engines at Railroad Junction site on youtube. I will be posting the latest DCC engines that are released EACH MONTH. Subscribe and get the monthly updates. I've subscribed to BLMA as well, as your videos and products I buy ROCKS!

  • So cool dude!!!!!!!!!

  • So cool

  • You're too modest! That's one helluva layout dude! The scenery is impeccable and the detail is incredible. Nice nice nice work! You seem like a really good guy. Again, congratulations on a superb job.

  • Really nice layout and great video

  • I have wanted to build a model layout but all steam enigines but woooo i stink at modeling i would need a pro to do it all for me!

  • Great video. It's only expensive in the beginning. It gets cheaper on the way.

  • Mediocrity.

  • the best part of the vid is @ 0:29 it speaks for its self

  • I hope you manage to get in your 40 hours a week at the basement layout.

  • do any of ya'll know who makes that steamer? i want it

  • ITS AWESOME

  • do you buy the design like grass, houses and stuff

  • do you buy the design like grass, houses and stuff

  • Che figata !!!!!

    E come fate a riprodurre i suoni???

In ogni caso è spettacolare stò plastico!!!!!

  • 5 STARS. Very well stated

  • EVERYTHING LOOKS SO REAL!

  • Guys, you complain about the cost of the hobby--ever hear of E-bay? And the price of a new model engine with dcc IS expensive for all the electronics and computerization. Start off smaller and with less expensive equipment. Start with 2nd hand equipment from E-bay. Read Model Railroader or Model Railroad Craftsmen and learn what you need to start. You aren't likely going to build a basement sized train lay-out your first week in the hobby! It took that guy in the video 15 YEARS!

  • bummer! hey, is this a 56 oldsmobile at 1:31 - the yellow/white one!?

  • no Its a Malibu 55 Chevy

  • XD It's expensive for the guy who looks at buying one of the newest steam locomotives on the market and sees their each about $200-$300 each. I love my trains but with my budget of 20 dollars every 2 weeks this 17 year old has to go with digital model railroading with Trainz because of money issues.

  • OriginalAlphathewolf

I know what you mean man. I make money as I earn it, and as lazy as I am, thats not very much. I buy cheap wood for buildings, sheet metal, and glue. That's all I need to make something new on my layouts. I'm gonna get some DCC stuff for my birthday though. Sound baby!

  • 40 HOURS A WEEK,,,,,THAT IS INCREDIBLE,,,,,,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK,,,,,,Pete

  • nice audio

  • This would make a great hobby! I'll bet it cost a fortune!

  • @Chicago10281 it is a hobby and yes it does cost a lot

  • Sorry man, but it doesn't.

It can if you want to,but it doesn't have to be. Of course, pending on what "a lot" actually is....

  • Again, this is a lifetime hobby and a lot of it has to do with detailing, not spending the most money. In the opening shots, about 15 seconds in, there is a modified Tyco building, some simple scratchbuilt buildings and an Atlas Lumberyard kitbash I built 15 yrs. ago. Today at a swap meet you can get that type of stuff for cheap and kitbash beyond what I did.

  • Okay, the money is not so bad---but this guy has a wife and a job AND he said he spends 40 hours a week down there. Where does this guy work that he has 40 extra hours to spend on this--and when does he ever see his wife. I love this stuff, though.

  • The main question I've heard asked in this regard is how many hours do you spend watching tv or on the 'net? Add that up, and by week's end, the hours can be suprising.

    Discipline & time management.

He'd rather go make something than tune in,sit down and switch off. I can spend just as long per week, but weekends can soak up a fair bit of time too.

Perhaps, it should be asked, where do you work that takes so much of your life from you ?

  • @moonrice555 - he never sees his wife. That's why he's so happy! Ha!

  • It is a great hobby. Very rewarding and it teaches a modeller a lot. I wouldn't consider it an expensive hobby, unless you want it to be. Stuff doesn't age like ,say sport equipment,or video game etc.. I'd be safe saying that for the cost of a few dvd's or PS3 games, you can get train gear that will last decades.

  • I have a question besides Is this layout real? haha. How did you get the trains and turtable to run so smoothly/? Ive been reviewing other videos on Youtube and yours is the first Ive noticed that runs flawlessly. Extremely well done.

  • @CSM Snake Thanks! I like to run at scale speeds or less. The engines are nothing but stock Atlas, Intermountain, etc. I use Wahl Clipper Oil on the tracks. Whatever film builds up helps keep the rail conductive.

  • This is a really a nice layout, but I got to wonder with all that work put into these model train layouts it's too bad no one has been able to duplicate the streets more realisticly to include myself. I used to help pave for a company before I started collecting trains. I guess thats why most streets in models are an eye- sore fore me.

  • dang im only 15years old and still making mine big i think i might need some tips on building my electric set i need some tips from this guy.

  • Dude, do you buy Model Railroader? It caters to beginners to intermediates.

There's also two excellent podcasts AND a most excellent online magazine MODEL RAILROAD HOBBYIST which is totally free..they just ask you to visit the sponsors sites, which isn't the hardest thing to do. What problems are you having?

  • nice layout

  • Hey sweet as layout (Y)

How do you keep your tracks so clean??

  • Absolutely Fantastic!!! Great job!!!!

  • my grandpa has been doing this in his basement

  • @archerbellgallagher u r right lol

  • WOW!!!!! im in the middle of my own layout and this one rocks i wish mine looked like that!

  • That's not a model you've all been duped.

  • I believe that they used pc based sotfware to controll this similiar to item number 170417820059 on ebay

  • Model train sets are the coolest nerdy thing ever.

  • i love model railroading, but prices are driving me away. hell, i used to get 2 or 3 cool athearn cars for the price of 1 today...and in this economy who the hell can afford it? 180 to 260 dollars for a new athearn gp15??? youve got to be kidding me!!!!!

  • great, and the fact that I'm close to it makes it even better

  • nice layout. and time line...speed on this video was great...makes it look so realistic !

  • the scale speed seems correct...too many layouts seem to forget that...I had a friend who worked on the Soo Locks and maybe more history I have forgotten but he had a model about circa 1910 on his wall...I wish I'd taken a foto but it looks much like yours...:)))

  • lol

  • This model train build is amazing. I bet he has added some things to it since then. I had a minerature train set. Just a track, train and chemical container, and box cars. Along with the station. It was small, and hardly ever used it as a kid. Sold it years ago.

  • What you build is close to perfect.

    Try : treinbaan 3000

  • very nice, great work

  • Looks great but your trains are moving waaaaaaaaaaaay to slow...just alittle faster will make it more enjoyable.

  • Wrong, they are being operated at scale speeds on a scale model railroad. You need to look for Lionel to see trains going waaaaaaaaayy to fast., meaning= toys.

  • They look way better when they are mozing slow like that.

  • @shooteraod Ya, like the other guy said they are running at scale speeds which make it more enjoyable.

  • Looks great!

  • Unreal! Probably one of the best layouts on uTube!! Everything here is perfect--good work!! I love weathered trains n buildings and rusty worn out track...

  • Interesting comments! I think the key is that model railroading is a lifetime hobby. You start slowly and accumulate equipment through the years. The buildings, scenery, and details are what a model railroad is about along with operating like the prototype. Yes there are some very expensive engines out there, but you don't need to purchase that type of stuff to enjoy the hobby.

  • It's true this stuff is expensive, hell the Canadian Pacific royal hudson I looked to find for an HO Scale layout I had planned was going to run me up 800 bucks.

  • i want one

  • Railroading is in my blood too, Im 13 and I love all aspects of modern and past railroading. Your detail is amazing in this layout. I have some of the same rolling stock that you have. Great job on it

  • im 11 and imm working on one of those expensive ones like this one but 4x8

  • Cool story!

  • are those hornby's

  • i can't believe they called that a trainset. i would find that insulting

  • love the close-ups, sound effects of the train, and details of the town as well. this video is really cool!!! please give us more vidoes and longer ones as well.

  • i'm 16 and ive got my dads HO triang hornby set thats around 45 years old now and i have it running well-pretty standard layout but some minor mods-electrics run perfect and i also have a robuilt O gauge which was built between ww1 and ww2 that i am trying 2 get parts for.- can't find anything in Australia

  • Ain't no myth son, model railroading IS expensive!

  • it's funny how this guys says he wants kids involved. We went to a show here in Milwaukee, and my boys would ask questions and each booth had a person that would say it's too complicated to understand. Then they wonder why the hobby isn't as strong.

  • Wear a mic?

  • This is both awesome and Legen...wait for it...I hope none of you are lactose intolerant becasue the next word is dary!

  • The structures look excellent. Good job!

  • Holy crap, u regular people don't get Model RAILROAD, not train set.

  • Really cool

  • ya awsome

  • I would imagine that dust would gather everywhere. Am i right? How would would a problem like that be taken care of?

I also have another question. How many engines can I put on one set of track with one transformer?

  • Dust really isn't too big of a problem. The room has a ceiling and nothing other than the layout and my workbench is in the basement. Anything dusty like sanding or cutting is done in the garage. As far as your set, it depend how much amperage your power pack puts out and what your locomotives draw. Most guys with a mid-level power pack can operate 3 units without problems. Most newer locos w/o sound draw less than 1 amp running. Good Luck!

  • this is superb!

  • that's huge! My brother's really big into model trains but he'll probably never do something thsi cool

  • You never know where this hobby will lead. Like most things in life, you meet different people who inspire you and it can turn into something bigger than you thought. Tell your brother to keep modeling. There are so many ways to enjoy this hobby outside of building a big layout. Thanks for the cool comments!

  • i love these things ive had my trains since i was 2 and loved them ever since

  • Way to go! I am 58 and have been working on my first layout. It's a lot of work, but extremely rewarding!

  • His layout is in the latest issue of Model Railroader

  • I suspect he may mean a power pack.

BTW were you associated with Pacific Scale Rail?

  • I am not. There is now additional video of the layout taken by Bob Wundrock. He does a great job! Just look for his stuff on youtube.

  • its awesome man i have a N scale set but my Feeder is broken and i would buy another 1 but i dont no what type to buy ???

    im so confused

  • Ike: a feeder is one of the wires that feeds electricity to the track; I don't think that's what you mean. May I suggest you go to the nearest hobby store or the nearest library, and get an economical, softcover book that introduces you to model railroading.

I spent a number of years in the MR business and have seen too many people wreck their equipment, waste money, and lose interest, all because they didn't know the basics of the hobby.

Look for inspiration from hobby magazines, too.

  • i have some vids of my HO scales too (not as complex as this) lol!~!

  • Very Cool.

  • Outstanding layout! My earsI recognized a QSI equipped unit with a Wabco "honk" horn sound. I very much like the well detailed work on the scenery and the code 83 trackwork on your mains! The level of realism is incredible. How did you paint those beautiful clouds?

  • if you look how thebige61 did it, i guess they spray painted it

  • Thanks! The clouds over Waupaca were done with latex based paint and applied using a stiff stencil brush. I didn't go around the whole layout with clouds to mix up the look a little.

  • Great advert for model railroadering.

    Nobby

  • amazing layout, is this Sheboygan, Wisconsin, because I bough lots of model trains off e bay from a man who runs J and D's Internet Railroad, it is a great store

  • J&D's is AWESOME! I bought a bunch of TankTrain cars from them. I was looking for a specific amount of cars, and after the bidding was over, I was able to buy more from them above and beyond what was offered on the auction. Yeah, I love the way they operate.

  • Thanks for the compliment, but the layout which appeared in "GMR" was a Soo Line layout built by John Proebsting who passed several years ago. This layout was built using his as an inspiration so in a way it has accomplished some of what I had hoped for. My layout and the ideas behind it are soon to be featured in a major model railroad magazine... mid-2009. Thanks for looking!

  • This layout appears in Great Model Railroads a few years ago...right?

  • amazing at 1:55

  • So detailed ... so accurate ... wonderful to see.

  • True.

  • The railroad is run with NCE DCC. The traffic lights are Walthers modified to look like 1950s lights.

  • did u use a digital control setup for that? i saw a remote which looked like the one that were using for our future setup...

  • how did you so make it so goo

  • thats nice he is right tere is alot of wiring to do.

  • hey great layout. are those the walthers cornerstone traffic lights?

  • That's really interesting. I bought the beginnings of a rail road set for my husband for Christmas. He's been ill and his family had trains, he didn't.

So, I've really gotten interested in it but am a complete know nothing.

Thanks for the chance to learn a bit.

I would appreciate any help you could give.

  • That is great. It really works well when everything is consistent with the time frame.

I am attempting to model the Soo Line between 1965-1985 in O Scale proportions on Atlas O 3-Rail Tracks. My big delay has been trying to get all the small sectional track pieces and put them in the right place to elimate kinks.

  • I have really learned alot with this hobby as well.

  • Thanks for the comments I am working on finishing the balance of the layout before 2010. Learning...I think that's why we enjoy the hobby.

  • Nice clean work; good sense of color that's so often lacking. It's being built with an artist's eye, and that makes a big difference. 5 Stars for you!

  • nice layout, love the little buildings.
