  • This is a great interpretation! I love it!

By the way, in the beginning how do you play your twos against threes so well? I'm having a lot of trouble with them.

  • @pknbgr111 A Happy New Year!!!

    Thank you for your comment.

I suggest you to practice hands separately a lot of times.

Then play with both hands together. I know it is quite difficult.

    Good luck !!!

  • wow! This is one of the best playings I've heard ever. Really just wonderful! i love this!!

  • @tooangelica Thank you for checking it out and your comment! I am so glad.

This piece is one of my favorite one♪ Thanks again~!

  • Very good!!! I'm 12 and I'm learning this. You set a great example for me. Thank you so much!!

  • @mcdomino24 Thank you for your comment.

I am glad very much if It will be help you some..

  • This is beautiful!!! Thank you for playing so beautifully and giving me an amazing example that I can look at while I slowly work through the first arabesque

  • @livi3935 Thank you for checking it out and your kind comment.

I love Debussy's composition. This two arabesques are beautiful and lovely piece.

I want to play it again in near future. Thanks a lot to you!

  • great part2! you play those two part perfectly! :D

  • @wrigleyx Thank you so much!!!, Fred. I know you posted some new videos.

I want to check them out, but not enough time now.

I do play on a charity recital (for pray for Japan) in May, so I spend to work hard these days.

I will play Clair de Lune by Debussy in the concert.

    Chihiro.

  • @pennehk i wish you a great recital, you'll be great for sure. Claire de lune is a wonderful piece. Have some good rehearsal Chihiro! i love well piano playing, that's why i often watch your vidéos, it's hard to find some well Debussy playing. i keep an eye on your work!!! Fred :D

  • @wrigleyx Thanks, Fred !!!

  • beautiful Chihiro!

  • @wrigleyx Thank you !!!

  • Merci beaucoup pour ce moment agréable ! J'aime beaucoup le fait que vous ne jouiez pas trop vite comme dans la majorité des autres vidéos, on prend ainsi le temps d'apprécier la moindre notes, splendide !

  • @flobione8 Merci, Thank you for your comment.

Even though I can't understand almost all your words,

I want to say you to thank you!

  • @pennehk OK sorry i translate it ! Thank you for this pleasant time looking at your video. I like the fact you play at a reasonable speed, not like in the most of videos on youtube ! In that way we can enjoy each notes..Amazing !

  • @flobione8 Hi, thank you for translating your words for me!!

I appreciate that. And thank you for your kind comment. I am really glad to see that.

    Thanks a lot to you!

  • He was a genius trying to do something different, from the dramatic excesses of the late romanticism!

I know who much work it takes to play this like you: the left and right hands have different irregular rhythms in the first piece. In the second piece I don´t know because I haven´t study it.

The melody of the first one is so nice... Ah! I have heard it many times and always sounds new, in your hands is quite unique!

  • @uutbchh Thank you, Ray. I do like set pieces like this arabesque, Two poems by Scriabin, Two rhapsodies by Brahms, like that.

My hands are unique ??? hahaha.

  • Just lovely . . .

  • @ClassicalPianoRubato Thank you so much!

  • You play it beautifully, and Bosendorfer is my absolute favorite brand piano. My featured video is on a 1912 Bosendorfer. Aaah, that's not me in the video. lol I wish I could play like that. lol

You are great! I'm almost finished with Deux Arabesque and I think I'll use yours as a guild to help me polish it up since I can see your hands, you play beautifully, and you don't speed so it's easy to follow. Love your rubatos.

Thanks for posting this lovely video!

  • @lllllllllllllll88 Thank you for your nice and kind comment. I am so impressed and glad very much.

Yes, this piano is Bosendorfer, I like it and I think it suits this piece sounds.

    Thanks a lot to you.

  • mmmmm j'adore :-)) vraiment très beau !

  • Very nice! Thank you the uploading.

I will play the 1st arabesque in my concert, today. :) - I'm a little worried... :| - And... Is the piano a Bösendorfer? - I saw that it is. :)

  • @zongi8 Thank you for your comment.

I am sorry to reply late.

    How was your concert ?

I know before the concert, almost all pianists will be nervous.

But every things will be good experience for us.

Yes, this piano is a Bosendorfer.

    Thanks again.

  • @pennehk My concert was in Hungary, (I'm living also in Hungary). That was great, but I had some mistakes, unfortunately. :S I played Schubert and Bartók too. :)

You're playing very well! Thanks the reply :) - and Jah, the Bösendorfer is my favourite piano. Bösendorfer has a very nice bass. :) - And sorry for the language mistakes, I'm learning just for two years english. :D

  • @zongi8 Hi, Tóth!

I am glad to hear from you about your concert.

    Congratulations !!!

You don't need to be worried about mistakes.

Most important things is to show/tell your music to audience.

I always make mistakes although I had too much!!! hahaha..

I think your English has no problem. Mine is too bad.

Sorry to you and sorry to all people.

  • excellent!!! i have currently just started learning this song. hopefully i will be able learn and play this song like you some day. [: keep it up! xx

  • Thank you so much!

    A Happy New Year!!!

  • I'm currently learning the second arabesque and your version was amazing. I was wondering if you had any tips that could help me out? thanks

  • Thank you for your comment.

I am sorry to reply too late.

Any tips for you? ummm...I haven't seen how you play, so It's difficult to say anything.

This video was recorded about 3~4 years ago, and it's not so good performance.

I just say 'relax' and 'enjoy the music and rhythm'', and one more 'listen to your sounds carefully'.

Please keep it up! I look forward to see your videos.

  • i plan on learning this as soon as i finish his Children's Corner Suite, but hopefully ill be as good as you one day. on a scale of (easiest) 1-10 (hardest) how would you rank both of these arabesques?

  • 7 probably!

  • Thank you for seeing it and your comment.

    ah....I can't decide how I rank it....

Maybe MrNthunder95 is right, I think.

But You can play it when you master 'Children's corner".

    Please keep it up!

  • i actually already started learning it. for me the hardest is just simultaneously playing the triplets and eigth notes. coincedently i didnt finish doing childrens corner because of the triplets in the snow is dancing. i might go back to it when i finish this. thanks anyway for the advice

  • I am learning this song and I can play it all pretty well, but not as well as you! Good job! Hopefully I can play like you someday! :)

  • Thank you for your comment.

You are still young, so you can improve a lot in your future!

I want to see your performance, if you will post your performance on YouTube, please let me know!

  • Beautiful playing! Debussy can be vague and ephemeral, very unique. Thank you.

  • Thank you for seeing it and your comment!

    Thanks again.

  • pennehk did well on this deux . . . but i was particularly impressed with how she performed Clair de Lune (Suite Bergamasque) . . . only one perceptible miss halfway thru. most musicians really screw it up . . . but

pennehk did very well. hats off to you.

  • Thank you for listen/watching my Deux Arabesques and Clair de Lune, and leaving your comment.

I am so pleased, thank you so much...

  • Youtube is so amazing for a piano player!! I am learning this song and I listen/watch your version multiple times a day so you know you have some fans! It's as good as I've seen on youtube. Nice job!

  • Thank you for watching it and your comment.

    I am so pleased...

    Thanks a lot.

I look forward to see your version.

  • Im talking about the first song;) very well played by the way, keep it up;)

  • Thank you for your both of comments.

I have no time to practice this piece right now, (this performance about 4-5years ago)

I will do it one day.

  • This is song is challenging, indeed. I miss the soft pedal, I couldn't here if there was any use of it. Using una corda can also come in handy, because playing silently and quickly at the same time is not simpel. I think the tempo is fine, debussy's music is very rubato and emotionally.

  • This song is so hard. I liked how it sounded so I rushed my teacher into letting me play it (even though I'm not even close to that level). The only thing I'm having problems with is the tempo. It seems with this piece you can't just play one steady tempo, it gets fast in places and slower in others. I just can't seem to understand how to play those parts (which sadly is every part!!)..

Anyways, this was a beautiful performance. Great job.

  • Hi, thank you for your comment.

    Yes, you are right.

It was not steady tempo. too much rubato.

But this performance was a few years ago, so

maybe I will play other way now or in the future.

    We are improving, right?

  • I'm improving the more I practice. But that would be really great if you played this song again! Thanks for responding!

  • You are welcome.

I have to practice a lot of pieces for concerts in next year, so no more time, but I will play this piece again one day.

    Thank you.

  • wow. awesome :] i admire you a lot ;)

  • Thank you so much!

  • it sounds lovely! the speed is right on as those triplets don't sound choppy at all. i can only play this slowly cause I'm afraid if I play up to speed, it will be very easy for my fingers to hit a wrong note and forget in the middle. you played so smoothly...did you ever worry about forgetting when you were playing in this performance? how long did it take you to memorize the FIRST PART of deux arabisque..just the 1st partt? is1 week enough to memorize since I can play it with music already?

  • Thank you for your comment.

I am so sorry to reply too late.

I am always fighting with my memorize when I play in front of audience.

I am not sure about how long I took to memorize it, because I have played this piece for a long time..

When I was young, enough for 1 week, but you had better spend 2-3weeks. So you will have confidence.

  • this is great! i'm learning this song right now it's very very hard. i learned it with another teacher but he taught the wrong way (no counting, dynamics, nothing just play the keys) and then i got a new better teacher so i'm learning it with his methods.

  • Thank you for watching it and your comment.

I see...You have a talent! You could find better way.

    So you have developed, right?

I am look forward to see yours!

    Please keep it!

  • I really like the way you played the first Arabesque! It's pretty much as I interpreted it in my mind! I'm learning that piece right now and my teacher told me to sightread on my own first so I've been listening to a lot of recordings and performances of it!

  • Thank you so much for watching it and your comment!!!

I would like to listen to/watch how you to play.

Would you please let me know when you post your performance ?

I am really glad to see it.

    Thank you.

  • good job. :)

  • Thank you!

  • i can always count on someone else to post it on youtube

  • I play both arabesque and it wasn't so bad, but I did practiced a lot! :p I just love these pieces. I play it everyday for fun! ^^

  • i'm learning this song right now. it's sooo difficult, but so beautiful :)

  • The key is training your two hands to not know what the other is doing. And keep everything light. Hang in there!

  • I love people who lift their hands off the key board =D it's so unnecessary but makes you look so much better while performing

  • It's so beautiful :)

I'm studying the 1st arabesque now, for my next piano audition, though I have a few problems with the counter-time (contra tempo) ...

Anyway, it's a really good version!!

  • i liked it better than your clair de lune interpretation

  • i have never seen so much emotion put into debussy's arabesque. Imagine how it would sound with pedals!!

  • The pianist was using the pedals throughout and very effectively. If you watch the dampers on top of the strings in this performance (white felts under each of them) you'll see them move up and down with each operation of the pedals. I'm not sure why you thought she was not using the pedal? She used it for the whole piece and very effectively. You can also hear the sustain as she is using it.

  • i love the second one =]

  • so nice...

  • i love this!

are you supposed to use a pedal with this song? I just started learning it.

has anyone ever played it slowly? I personally think it sounds more beautiful at a slower tempo.

  • i learn it too, rythm is hard :/

  • i agree. i use pedal sparingly on this song... and i do think it sounds more dream-like and beautiful when played a bit slower with more sensitivity <3

  • you can play it with or without pedal, its up to you to interpret it. Debussy rarely put pedal marks in his music. Chopin strictly defined the use of pedal, but by the time Debussy was en vogue, pianists were already disregarding Chopin's pedal marks and so Debussy left it to the interpreter to decide.

  • Five Stars!

  • you are so talented and beautiful and elegant. wow.

  • you are so talented. i m happy to see somebody playing with such a passion, like you always do.

    thank you

  • i'm gonna play this holy crap not good. my teacher thinks i can do it.......hm nice to hav such confidence.

  • i might be doing this for my 5th grade exam. im not sure i can pull it off, though.

  • 5th grade OMG. you must be really good. im 24 and just starting to learn. its good your starting early. its so much easier that way. good luck with the exam.

  • I love the second one ; )

  • You are wonderfully talented - I have listened to this video several times and enjoyed your performance greatly. I agree with a previous poster - great to hear both Arabesques being played. You also look very elegant and beautiful in your video.

  • excellent jobbb ur fantasticc

  • What a change to hear both Arabesques and not just the first one. Thank you for posting, I enjoyed them both

  • What an incredible talent you have!! Thank you so much for sharing your gift with the world :D

  • Thank you so much!

  • Haven't found a better interpretation of that first Arabesque yet, in my opinion the closest thing to perfect I have heard as yet. :o Brilliant!

  • I'm learning this song for my 6th grade piano exam ..

    it's hard for the 1st tie. ..

    but in the end , it's kind a easy .haha :D ..

this is a very beautiful song :P

  • I'm learning this for my gr. 10 piano exam!!! I'm so excited!! :)

  • arabesque no.2 sounds like its almost playing no.1 backwards but that still is a awesome piece that u played

  • is this the list A,B,C,D, or E piece for RCM exams?

  • oops i meant D

  • you can play it for list d for grade ten

  • OMG this is perfect for the harp, i am begging my teacher to teach me this!

  • I have to play this for my piano competition. D:

It was really beautiful! I hope i'll play it as good as you!

  • Beautiful, I've got to get this for nov recital

  • Debussy is my fvorite composer and his famous

Arabesque No. 1 and No 2, brings such joy to my ears as I listen to you play. Thsank you for posting this. Aloha.

  • You have a perfect command of the keyes! Your

rendition of Debussy's Deux Arabesque is

lovely to listen to but, not surprising. since you are a piano teacher and a pianist!

  • AHHHH I love what you play. ACtually, I try to work "nous n'irons plus au bois" de Debussy. I love what you play, you are a model for me when I work and it helps me a lot!

Thank you and it's very beautiful^^

    Max

  • im learning this piece right now,

your vid helps me alot, but

is it a bit too rush??

    i dunno

  • I love Debussy and his arabesques...but I think that you have to be more expressive in the first one..the seconde one is perfect..I love it and I hope I will play it like you! Very Good Job..Wonderful!

  • You have me both perplexed and relieved. We actually play Arabesque No. 1 almost identically. I've heard this song being played completely differently before and I was really worried I taught it to myself the wrong way all this time. Yes I know it's about interpretation.

Anyways, you've inspired me to learn No. 2. Thank you.

  • Wonderful. Your performance shows that you have a great respect for Debussy (my favorite composer). You do him great justice.

  • I watched many Arabesque in Youtube, you are the only one who played correctly in all aspects....Excellent performance.

  • @PianoRon i agree !!! You r the best Debussy pianist on you tube !

  • you're very talented and played this song well, but i think you kind of rushed at some parts. o.~

  • Things that is nice with this vid is first of course good job on the piano, and second I can see where to use the pedal ^^

    Nice ;)

  • awesome!!

  • You are awesome

I finished the fist arabesque, so..is it hard to learn the second? On a rating of 1-10 (10 being very hard)

  • ive just started to learn this song last week. its so hard! im 14 btw! lol,is that a really young age to be learning this song?

  • >is that a really young age to be learning this song?

    I don't think so.

Because when I learnd it first time I was 12.

    Good luck!

  • has anyone seen the film 'portrait of jennie' where part one is used by dimiti tomkin..this is where i heard this beautiful music first...also a great film too!

  • Portrait of Jennie is one of my favourite films. ^_^

  • Your performance is great, I really enjoy this video. You've inspired me to learn the rest of this song as I only know the first 10 measures or so by memory.

    Keep up the good work!

  • beautiful. im learning this piece right now for an audition for an art school, its so beautiful. most everyone i know says it sounds like a waterfall.

  • It does sound like a waterfall in the first part of this whole song!

  • i love the first arabesque!!!

  • Beautiful playing of a beautiful piece of music by a beautiful person !!! It makes me want to practise more !!!! Greetings from Kamloops, BC, Canada.....thanks for the insipiration !!!!

  • How come these piano recital rooms always look like the inside of a funeral home?

Every time I listen to Debussy, I think of Mr. Rogers.

    Great playing BTW sweetheart.

  • Haha, I think of Twilight. Edward's favorite composer -- Claude Debussy.

  • As ever, your performance of Arabesque is

elegant and lovely. Thanks for posting your videos.

  • Well done, but I think it's so slowly. It's only my opinion :)

  • Hi Pennehk,

Very gracefull and elegant playing...I'm sure people in Honk Kong must be mad about you.

  • I'm currently on the first part of this piece, I must say that I love Debussy! I love your perfomance aswell, it's inspiring :). I think I have some training to do before I reach your level of skill.

  • Le Gasp!

  • Beautiful!

  • Thanks!

  • merveilleux. wonderful

  • Thank you so much!

  • Thanx so much for playing both arabesques. I'm trying to learn them now and as with Claire de lune, I look to you for guidance. I feel like I'm getting free lessons from you. Thanx again!!!

  • Thank you always.

hahaha! It's like free lessons from me through the videos? If you got something from mine, I'm so glad!

  • wow.

    :O

  • I really love listening and watching your performances and this piece (first part especially) is one of my favorites and one that I want to learn. I am fairly new to the piano. I really respect people of your expertise. Thanks, again!

  • Hi, thank you for watching it and your comment. You made me so happy. Please learn this piece! This is one of very beautiful Debussy's piece, of course I love it.

  • Thank you for watching my video all the times, and of course your comment.

Learning the piano is very very fun, interested for me. you too that? I always love the piano in my life.

  • hey! have u tried with "Fireworks" by debussy,....they were really challenging to me! they´re great!!

  • Hi! sorry, I haven't tried "Fireworks", yet. But I want to try it. The piece is really wonderful one. Before trying that, I will study "Ondine" from Preludes Book 2.

  • oh! wanna listen to it!!!!

    ill also try!

    regards, Yani

  • hahaha, I need a lot of times for practicing. "Ondine" is also very difficult for me.

Please try it! I want to listen to it!

  • Penne, I'm never tired of hearing ou playing these Arabesques! Debussy works always seems to me to be the soundtracks of most beautiful dreams, don't you think so? Thanks to you for sharing these shows, I see you have many other videos playing the piano, and you're really a Master. Great! Congratulations!

  • Thank you so much! Yes, I think so, Debussey works are shown me very beautiful, wouderful dreams. I also say to thank you again!!!

  • wow!! Thank you for this execution, it was really excellent!! Debussy's Arabesques are perhaps two of the most beautiful classic works, And you execution shows such a great sensibility! Really beautiful! I admire you! Regards!

  • Thank you for watching it and your kind comment. Your comment mede me so happy. Thanks a lot!

  • sorry, a question...was it more difficult for you the 1st or the 2nd arabesque?¿

  • for me, both of them were same...ummm, 1st one is difficult for making sounds and interpretation, 2nd one is a bit technical...maybe.

  • thanx!! cos i was thinking of preparing both too for a recital next year

  • Oh! You play both of them in a recital! Very good program.

    Please do your best!

  • yah! and it was great to see you performing both!

but the nicest is the first one, doesnt it? luuuv it!

and, i want to know your opinion about the second one...i still dont know whether perform it...or not!

    keep in touch!!

thanks 4 the videos!! and congrats! =D

  • Hi! In my opinion, I think better to play both, because these pieces are set.

  • nice interpretation...but too rubato for me...

    =D

  • Your playing is beautifully heart felt. You feel each note and it comes from deep inside you. Your passion for the piece is very noticable. You have a wonderful expression in your playing. Thank you for sharing this. Bravo!!

  • Thank you for all of your words. But Impression's pieces are difficult for me, especialy making sounds...

    Anyway, thanks a lot!

  • Very beautifully played! :)

  • Thank you!!!

  • Great performance!! :)

  • Thank you!!!

  • very nice, added to my favorites ;)

  • Thank you very much !!!

  • you must be really devoted to debussy..you have portraits of him on your piano.

  • Wooooo....I have nothing to say...I'm surprised...

Anyway thank you for watching it & your comment!

  • your use of the sostenuto seems a bit abrupt, otherwise completely immaculate :)

  • >sostenuto seems a bit abrupt

hahaha...sorry about that. I will be careful that.

    Thank you for your comment!

  • とても綺麗なアラベスク1番ですね。僕は高校生の頃にラジオでこの曲を聴いて以来大ファンです。素敵な演奏をありがとうございます。

    こちらこそ、温かいコメントをありがとうございました。

  • Very good! I think it's almost perfect =)

I havn't played the second Arabesque before, but from what you play it seems like a good piece too =) x Keep it up my fellow HK-er x

  • good feeling, you express real "arabesque".

  • I'm learning this also, and this very inspiring
