Finding fault...every bluegrass youtube I see someone's critical of the players. Seems to be a pasttime with fans of the genre. How do you say Tony Rice was "off" on this or any other tune? Yet I see those posts all the time. Lighten up folks.
I would say Mr. Rice was probably just uninspired by the mediocre breaks of the musicians he was playing with. Plus the banjo player and mandolin player are too far on the leading edge of the beat and they speed up the tune.
Its not the bass player with the tempo proplem, its the half ass picking of tony trying to hit the right licks, he really has a hard time when he takes off and on his 2nd break.
@crypticald Agreed. Tony RIce is a world class musician, Sometimes, when I'm working, (not as a respected musician) I speak of McCarthyism to people who would prefer to have their television service restored instead of caring about my bourbon-soaked ranting.....
812bluegrassband - uh lol, yourself dude. Actually Rowan used to be my neighbor, and I've done some sets with Tony and Grisman, so I think I'll pass on your offer of "Bluegrass Research." My comment was in regards to somebody claiming "those guys were trying to play too fast." If the bass and banjo players weren't a pickup band I'd be surprised, because the bass player in particular was seriously dragging down the tempo by trying to play walking bass on a 2-beat tune. Dude.
Yes, Tony has played for many years and on several albums with both Peter Rowan and Bryn Davies (the bass player). Both are Extremely talented and I don't think they're dragging anybody down.
LOL, Pickup band? dude, you need to do some serious bluegrass research. Thats Peter Rowan! It would be safe to say Tony Rice has probably played with Peter Rowan as much as he has played with anyone in the history of his career. And when your Tony Rice it wouldn't matter if he played the song thumping his middle finger on a pumpkin. He's Tony Rice!.
Tony, especially in the first break, was trying desperately to get the band up to speed and play it at the tempo he kicked off with - like dragging an anchor on your right wrist. Much of the problem was the bass player trying to do too much and pulling the time into a heavier groove. I can pretty much guarantee he hasn't lost a step, but playing with pickup bands (like here) is a real challenge for people that play on his level.
YEAHHH... mr rice was strugglin there for a sec. haha and i half ecpected peter to start jamming out midnight moonlight. either way, gotta love an old classic
I didn't know Holden was playing any more. Last I heard from him he was driving long-haul trucks and not playing a lick. Glad to see he's still messing with the banjo. He's a great musician.
Bill showed up to play, and stuck around for about a year playing with two high string band, among others. Had some legal issues and we haven't seen him since. Too bad, great picker.
I was at this festival and saw this performance. Right after their set I found myself waiting in line for the port-o-john just in front of Tony Rice.
As I recall, this was not his best day. It was cold when he took the stage later that and his performance suffered. Still, it was fun to finally see him perform live.
I've now seen all four of my favorite flat pickers: Rice, Blake, Crary and O'Connor.
yeah - I know at one of these old settlers things he seemed a little tipsy - still beats most others. I've only ever seen him like that once in all the years I've seen him.
Really pretty awesome that you got this! I have seen pictures, like I say, and I've seen some still shots from that moment where they were acting like they were gonna break their guitars, too! LOL! Quite a riot and great guys. I just wish Mr. Rice felt better these days.
that guitar has great tony

I don't like Tony's pick guard. Too gay. The dark one looks better.

Lewey8705 3 years ago
Bill Holden. He played with Bill Monroe at some point in his career.

@Lewey8705 I don't,but he's top-notch.....I'd also want to ask who's the chick on bass ??!! She's right there the whole way - very accomplished.

Monitors were way off. And so was Tony, all weekend. Haha. Still better than 90% of the pickers out there...
crypticald 3 years ago
Tony was struggling a bit on his first solo.:-( Maybe the monitors were bad or someone was throwing him off. I've never heard Tony like that.....
