  • @ThePogokiller It's in my description. Basically, everything object below the purple coins is fake. Which means you can jump through the spikes. It also means you can fall through the floor there too, hence the random jumping over nothing.

  • @hi8ize Thanks, but you actually don't need to be invincible to spin jump on the Bowser statue fireballs or ball n chain enemies.

  • As 4rk4id stated, I see that you use the Mario Spin a lot. I don't like people using it, because I feel like it's ruining the "skill" of the playing using it. By having a variety of different jumps, it shows us what the player really can do, and it will get a better reputation. This is my opinion, and I expect people here to be mature enough to understand that every single soul on this planet has their opinions about certain things. By accepting that, you're showing the world your pwn4g3ness!!11

  • @Fallout3Younational I have harder Special Zone stages where I use - and am forced to use both. The kind of subtle, necessary switching that you're asking for just isn't necessary here.

  • @JerkBike101 One of these days I ought to just add an annotation for people that just can't read the description to understand how that room works and why I was able to jump through the spikes. Maybe, just maybe, people will understand.

  • I like the botanical and the P-balloon rooms, creative, and vicious, both good things.

    I notice that all of these rooms go from right to left. Not really a problem, just something to note I think...

    I don't really like that you have to see behind your HUD in the ghost and dark rooms. Seems especially difficult in the dark room, since that area isn't illuminated, and you have to see some stuff up there.

    You did a great job designing all the rooms, I like your style.

  • This is what I call a proper Bowser's Castle; It should always have 8 (or at least 6) different rooms with different types of challenges, themes and environments in each. Bowser's Castle in NSMB and NSMB Wii were both awful disappointments. And they were also pretty bland, but I like how you made each room with a different theme, an illusion-ghost room, a sort of greenhouse room full of Piranha Plants and Volcano Lotus, a lava room full of Podoboos and Grinders, etc.

  • @geopyro Thanks. It's tricky making sure the final level has an appropriate length while still remaining varied and cohesive enough and I think having multiple paths is one way to do just that. It's a large part of why the original Bowser's Castle in SMW worked as well as it did.

    My point is that smwcentral consensus has a very shallow, limited idea of what makes good game design, frequently ignoring context and point for a very rigid viewpoint that neither matters to people outside that niche nor works as some abstract "good" game design that the masses just don't get.

    There's a value to criticism, but rigid views shouldn't stifle creativity and they should still understand the point of what they're criticizing.

  • This is really great, but I have a couple questions. First of all, how do you make the giant castle spikes fall and rise? Second, How do you make all of the blocks move in the second room?

  • It's all layer 2 related. There are specific sprites that will cause layer 2 (normally the background, but it can be objects like shown) to behave in certain ways. Best to use the original SMW levels as a reference by looking at Lunar Magic.

    smwcentral can probably also help you out, if you're still confused.

    I'm a little late to the party. When you first released these videos, I was but a lurker here without an account, so I never did get to comment on all of them, but I must say that you are one fantastic level designer. Seriously; you're an inspiration.

    This hack is quite sadistic, but I find it peculiar how this final level doesn't seem quite as difficult as earlier stages... I guess the sheer scope of the level makes up for that. :)

    Anyway, thanks for the comment. Part of the fun I thought playing this level for the first time in SMW was gambling to see if you picked a good room or not and later choosing your own path, and I thought it was only right to copy that idea here. Some rooms are a little hellish (2 and 8), others are quite a bit easier (3 and 5).

    Yes, I see what you mean about the "gamble" associated with this stage. I never really thought of it that way before...but that not only makes sense, it does at least make each trip through the castle a unique one.

    As for the annotations: I think it's a toss up. I feel like I talk too much sometimes, but because that level is for a collab hack and I skipped so much stuff, I wanted to point out where everything was to the thread I posted in.

  • I think everyone has his own style, though, and I particularly liked your "goodies" videos. Some of your bonuses are extremely well-hidden, I must say, and it allows for people to see a video of your work without being spoiled of the secrets ('cause a secret is but a secret only once). Definitely not a bad idea at all.

  • Still haven't revealed everything yet either...

    I remember making the goodies videos as well to advertise that the hack wasn't just based on difficulty. Most of my videos were Special Zone runs or hard puzzles and such, and the hack wasn't just about difficulty. Of course, quick videos of hard Mario hacks sell better on YouTube as long as you have a unique hook, but I hope they still served their purpose. Kind of wish the video quality was as high as the Mario videos I make now, but oh well.

  • I actually find room five and six (power balloon, scroller) easier than the water area, if only because the bone fish come in some evil positions at the end.
