@raisonjohn okay, thanks i understand what you mean but... if i was making this folio at home, how should i set it up? like, i want to get into an architecture course and im not exactly sure as for what make portfolio should have. could you please tell me the basic guidlines for the folio that i would need? thanks heapd!
@PakiiD1Me786 it depends. if you want the story-line and conceptualization stage portfolio then yes. but if you're talking about final presentation and realistic rendering techniques, then no. please read the description of the video to enlighten you more. thanks.
Don't see where all of this hate is coming from. I draw from point perspectives but can comprehend that this sketch is obviously about being abstract and not re-doing to perfection, but flowing etc. people are idiots.
@SolarEmpireHQ yes you hit it right to the point! it's supposed to be flowing! no hesitation. just continuously translating whatever idea or vision we are imagining. thanks for the comment and watching the vid! :)
@justintylercarey Exactly, and that is the point of this exercise. Too translate what's going on in your mind in the quickest way possible, without rethinking, without erasing, without redoing.
@raisonjohn when i was growing up most advertising was hand rendered by airbrush or the likes, there were many rushed jobs, daring, incomplete, non "academic proportioned" pieces that really captured peoples imagination.
the sketch is nice... but shouldn't u start from the inner space and concept? rather then the form? am a student though... I'd be glad to receive a reply. thx
@denysost Yes, you may do the inner space first before the form which is the traditional way of architectural design, more commonly known by the expression "form follows function." This video, however, shows how you may start conceptualizing a form or an idea simultaneously with its intended function. Some (or most) architects might not agree, but it is my own personal conviction that spaces should be designed with the form and function in mind simultaneously rather than by steps. :)
you have your own style i guess but why draw so much people and unnecessary lines and squiggles? i think it misses the point of architectural representation. the sketch was just average for me, i know some guys from Korea and japan who could draw architectural stuff fantastically very fast, without those unnecessary lines -- painter from singapore
@datanotions this is a sketch while conceptualizing on the fly from scratch - a pure form of an idea or a vision that is running through one's mind putting it on a piece of paper without hesitation, without re-thinking, without erasures, without re-doing. This is not a formal architectural presentation but an informal representation of what we are thinking for 10 minutes at that point in time. once you have your pure idea and vision, that's the only time you modify and enhance.
@hoodyGSA Thanks! I wouldn't recommend rapidograph, or any other technical pens for that matter, because of several disadvantages: high maintenance (requires periodic cleaning), fragile (especially the thinnest/hairline points), and very expensive. Unless you are still doing manual technical drawings/drafting (nowadays, of course, we use computer-aided design software). For sketching, I would recommend using felt-tip pens: low maintenance, easy to work with, and relatively cheap :)
@missgimmeabeat Thanks!!! I had a tough time doing perspectives as well during my early years in school... but constant practice... always sketching and sketching and sketching and looking at mistakes and thinking of ways to improve drawings had greatly improved my visualization. I'm sure you will too :) Good Luck!!: ))
@9LilSa Thanks!!!! Architecture is a tough career... but, like any other courses, if you love what you are doing, it doesn't really matter how difficult it is as long as you are doing it :)) Good Luck!
@raisonjohn Oh really? thank for telling :) btw, I got it :D I'll try to do my best! in my opinion, architecture is very interesting for me more than graphic design lol
@9LilSa Hehe... I share the same view. I have always believed architecture is the mother of all arts ;) It's graphic design, painting, sculpture, music, movement, photography, and all other arts combined -- not to say the addition of engineering, scientific, business, and communication elements thrown in the mix :))
@raisonjohn ur too late to replied to me lol!! im not study in architecture :/!!!!!!!!! damn me :/!!! well i dont care to study in my life :/!! i really wanna study in ARCH but i have no ideas :/
You inspired me to do manual perspective once more. I haven't practiced my manual perspective drawing for a long time now since I started using 3d software programs.
@arkitotoyz thanks! i think manual drawings and computer-aided drawings should go hand-in-hand. it's always nice to go back to the fundamentals ;)) good luck!
humans look better white, and the fornt humans shoud be more detailed than the ones in background..as close you look at an object ,or in this case, a man..more detailed it is :D
Will show this in my technical sketching unit of my drafting class... nice job - especially your description of "quick", and "creating mistakes", "without erasures"...
@odlavinbnx thanks! the p.o.v. is a trick i use to cut down the time to sketch a perspective... instead of using the normal man's eye view, i use worm's eye view (which omits all projections to the vanishing points below the horizon line).
@raisonjohn Completely disagree, i'm an architecture student... context is everything!! maybe just spend a bit more time on surroundings.. looks good though, love you style - very similar to my own! red is cool too
@GamingLikeMad Thanks for the tip. I actually did a couple of sketches using black pen (with different line weight / thickness). Check out my other videos (12-minute sketch) and (15-minute sketch).
well im studing archteicture now for almost 2 years, i cant judge your sketch by just one drawing, but you draw pretty well, its drawn "right" as i say by the things i learned in the 2 years
Why is your house/plant drawn above the horizon line? Since it is set at the height of a human being that means your house floats. (oh and if it is at the top of a hill that means you're at least 10 ft tall according to your horizon line) everything else is OK :D
@iuliaaiuliaa Hi Corina! :) Two basic tricks I use in my 5-10 minute perspective sketches: 1) eliminating parts of the building/structure below the horizon line and 2) using 2 vanishing points with one point very close to the side of the building/structure while the other point is "estimated" (almost horizontal). Thanks for the good observation :)
I know hs technique! he drew that fast because it was in worm's eye view! the easiest way to sketch in doing architectural perspective.. he just made it in an illusion that the structure is on higher elevation.I did it once in my design exam hahaha!!!
@Ahamster1 Precisely! Most people develop good ideas through constant sketching - "training your hand to think"... the goal of this exercise, as seen in this video, is to put abstract ideas on paper at the least possible time. Then, once you've thought about all the forms, angles, the materials and the spaces, that's the time we render the perspective, in detail, for presentation purposes.
@hunter1801 hi hunter1801, just a piece of advice: on the contrary, try to look at things in a different perspective. if you see something (whether bad or good), don't compare yourself to them. Instead, use them as your motivation and inspiration to do better. It takes a lot of confidence, dedication, and patience to achieve something in life. I've been there, even flunked high school and wasted my life years back. But if I was able to turn my life around, so can you.... just a piece of advice.
@manyak1993 might be, but the emphasis is not on the color presentation but on formulating ideas on paper in the quickest time possible. but thanks for the comment.
@AletheDon again, just to reiterate what i put on the video description: the emphasis is not on color rendering or presentation or realism; it's formulating ideas on paper in the quickest time possible. Emphasis is on creating mistakes, on "thinking with your hand", on translating what you are imagining to the piece of paper in front of you on the fly without erasures, without rest, without re-thinking.
@ZephyrOfDarknessArt Precisely. In drawing, your hand and your mind (thru your sight) should complement each others' task. In a split-second, you must be able to decide on whether the form of the building should be like this, or should you continue to do that, or etc... Whenever you draw, you continuously think. And whatever you think, your hand draws. The piece of paper in front of us is the idea you thought.
@raisonjohn I want to be an architect, and I know very well how it should look a project sketch, and first of all this guy doesn't have the line, he don't respect the perspective points, he don't even aproximate or measure the distances and the highs, and I don't wanna talk about the hatch or shading. And I can talk much more about this sketch. The point is, if you want to show to the people something they can learn from it, then you must to do something very well done. And this is a bad example
@manga1boy have you even read the description of this video before making your comments? we are not talking about the basic vanishing points, picture planes, hatches, shadings, colors and other technical/mechanical rendering concepts. please read the description again. i am not disrespecting the basics. in fact, i can talk so much more about how to do that too, but that is not the point of this video. i am simply showing another way of how to do things in this fast-paced and competitive world.
@manga1boy Why did you intentionally omit the part that says "The point here is practicing "quick & dirty" sketches (i.e., overlapping lines, erasures, informal perspective, etc.) to visualize a design concept in the quickest time possible."
In short, if you're questioning me about FORMAL perspectives, colors, hatches, measure distances... you're in for a long night because THAT is NOT the topic of THIS video. If you want to learn these other things, then simply check my other works.
wow! i wish i could draw like you.. i'm an id student and will be taking the board exam by october.. are there any tips you can give me to improve my perspective? it's been my weakness ever since, scaled or not scaled,i'm just so bad at it.. i feel like i'm going to fail the board if i don't succeed at this..
very cool. question though when you are making your silhouettes is this something you have come to make from your own experiences or did someone teach you this? and what you reccomend for the way they should look?
@cgarcia171 thanks! making sketches such as this is probably the result of both my own experiences and what others have taught me. it sort of just evolves along the way when you regularly practice and "find your own style". a lot of the techniques that i came across when i was studying perspective and sketching never worked for me - but some did. also, a lot of the techniques i tried, just by practicing, turned out bad - but, in time, was able to find the most comfortable way to draw buildings.
Try to use different pens with different lineweight which can give ur sketches an atmosphere, if you use it right and try to avoid different colors.. just my opinion u got good skills and still great for 10 minute but u also got alot to learn
I see how perspective and vanishing points really give the sketch a "pop". I have to learn to draw what would be a rectangle from one angle as a shape with one side taller or shorter from another. Do you see what I'm saying? I love your work btw.
you can really improve by practicing sketches everyday. carry a sketch pad with you anywhere you go. don't worry if, at first, most of your drawings look too simple or too bad even for your taste. it is only through constant practice that you will be able to find your own drawing style and ultimately your skill. good luck!
Im in second year and im studying architecture. The best thing for you to do would be to practis on your sketching because thats mostly what architects do before planing out their building or what ever. My mum and grandad are great artists and have helped me but im sure if you practis you will be just as great as drawing as this guy in the video so keep it up. : )
to Baguioakadi: Thanks for understanding. I see nothing wrong posting your works, sharing your techniques, & presenting your ideas even if you put your title on your name. As long as it is done responsibly, within the context of helping and increasing public knowledge, and would NOT delve into the realms of commercial advertising, i.e., incessantly marketing your services (even your fees) then making money out of it.
Why do you think Arch'l websites, books, magazines, and articles are around?
From UAP Doc. 200 - Standards of Professional Practice
Sec.1b "Architect SHOULD SHARE in the interchange of TECHNICAL INFORMATION and EXPERIENCE with other design professions.."
Sec.1d "Architect shall not use PAID ADVERTISEMENT.. However, presentation of materials.. through application of his work... to advance public knowledge.. MAY BE PRESENTED through ANY PUBLIC MEDIA"
Sec.5k "Architect shall UNSELFISHLY SHARE tech. info and experience among his colleagues and young aspirants"
TO: baguioakadi It is a BIG shame for a professional like you do wrong English. "...considering that an architect is a highly respected individuals with.." (should it be "individual"?) "..you even wright your title together with your name in one..." (wright or write?) "...because comments is..." (is or are?) where your going to test whether your work..." (your or you're?) "...you really is an architect you should..." (is or are?) Now this is more EMBARRASSING for a professional architect.
I've been into Architecture for a while now, having a gap year next year and hopefully will get some experience at a architecture office before applying to Uni. Got BCCD at AS levels so really need to improve these grades.

@raisonjohn In other words, drawing whatever comes to your mind no matter how it turns out?
ZephyrOfDarknessArt 11 months ago
@ZephyrOfDarknessArt Precisely. In drawing, your hand and your mind (thru your sight) should complement each others' task. In a split-second, you must be able to decide on whether the form of the building should be like this, or should you continue to do that, or etc... Whenever you draw, you continuously think. And whatever you think, your hand draws. The piece of paper in front of us is the idea you thought.

PLEASE DONT CALL THAT A DRAWING.... MANY ARCHITECTS WILL GET VERY MAD WHEN THEY SEE THIS ;P hehe

@CheungBung ok, tell them to give me a call after watching this.
raisonjohn 8 months ago
@raisonjohn I want to be an architect, and I know very well how it should look a project sketch, and first of all this guy doesn't have the line, he don't respect the perspective points, he don't even aproximate or measure the distances and the highs, and I don't wanna talk about the hatch or shading. And I can talk much more about this sketch. The point is, if you want to show to the people something they can learn from it, then you must to do something very well done. And this is a bad example
manga1boy 8 months ago
@manga1boy have you even read the description of this video before making your comments? we are not talking about the basic vanishing points, picture planes, hatches, shadings, colors and other technical/mechanical rendering concepts. please read the description again. i am not disrespecting the basics. in fact, i can talk so much more about how to do that too, but that is not the point of this video. i am simply showing another way of how to do things in this fast-paced and competitive world.
raisonjohn 8 months ago
@raisonjohn Yes, I did! "Hope you can learn something from this sample sketch". And what can I learn from it?
manga1boy 8 months ago
@manga1boy Why did you intentionally omit the part that says "The point here is practicing "quick & dirty" sketches (i.e., overlapping lines, erasures, informal perspective, etc.) to visualize a design concept in the quickest time possible."
In short, if you're questioning me about FORMAL perspectives, colors, hatches, measure distances... you're in for a long night because THAT is NOT the topic of THIS video. If you want to learn these other things, then simply check my other works.

very cool. question though when you are making your silhouettes is this something you have come to make from your own experiences or did someone teach you this? and what you reccomend for the way they should look?
cgarcia171 1 year ago

Im studying architecture (still first year) how did you learn to draw. Im not really good at drawing
PDE13 1 year ago
you can really improve by practicing sketches everyday. carry a sketch pad with you anywhere you go. don't worry if, at first, most of your drawings look too simple or too bad even for your taste. it is only through constant practice that you will be able to find your own drawing style and ultimately your skill. good luck!

@raisonjohn Steal. (drawings ideas that is)
noctune818 1 year ago

Why do you think Arch'l websites, books, magazines, and articles are around?

aw, architect ka na sa dating na yn? ... parang mayabang k ng konte... eh distorted nman perspective m... try mu muna 3d max yn o sketch up nlang para makita m kung anu mali m sa perspective
charcoal777 2 years ago
