  • I like the drink driving bits!

  • Ax is a very good car, perfect in every particular

  • best first car ever!, and the second stage on the carb at 3/4 throttle is every young new drivers dream come true!

  • dint realise how little there was thts shocking, i have two at the minute a gt5 h reg and a gt 3 door on a h aswell one alot better than the other, i have modded mine a bit tho with morrette headlights compomotive alloys and the biggest mod being the 16v vts engine which makes it ten times the fun running 15 second down santa pod and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. im building one good one using my old gt5 as spares but i feel a bit guilty now.

  • wow! great video man, herein spain we´ve got an AX and an e36 club, we love to race and hill-climb rally, the AX, even the 1.4 piece of junk (Non GT version) is great, you are a car lover, thats great

  • Your video has made me want another AX GT! I've had 4 GTs and one GTi. Loved the GTs so much. All G reg and I think all are now dead. Black G148 TKL, Grey G140 TKL (yeah, really!) Silver G706 DAB and another Grey G reg. All 3doors too. If I didn't have it's big brother (BX 16v - it feels like a big AX GT) I'd have a mint one sat in the garage.

  • the 1986-1998 Citroen AX was assembled in

    Rennes, France

  • Blimey thats amazing.....well it gets better because the E reg example in the video is in fact pictures from A press release. The story was a 5 page review from Performance Car in 1988 where they gave the AX GT a good rating. It was the phase 1 of the MK1's with the grey bumpers 13" alloys and no spoiler. So how long ago was it that you owned it and when did you sell? Have you been on the "how many left" website its shocking to see the figures only around a 110 taxed on the road! Regards Joe.

  • Hey Joe, this is so weird, one of the first AX GT's on this video (the red one with grey bumpers - E327 DRD) was my first car! I bought it from a guy who drove to meet me at the Humber Bridge. How strange! Brings back good memories! What a great car, never let me down, which is unusual for French cars! Was it your dad who sold it to me?

  • Good on you mate and I couldn't agree with you more. My first car was mk1 GT5 (the 5 door AXGT), I was devastated when I had to part with her. Since then I've had a Clio RSi and a Peugeot 106 GTi, but despite being technically superior cars, I still find myself longing for that little 1.4! - Not the fastest car in the world, not the best handling car in the world, but far and away the most fun car I've ever had the pleasure in driving. Good luck to you sir.

  • where'd you find them, I've looked for ages

  • Hello, well its really hard you have to bear in mind the following hard fact, which is according to 'How many left' there is only 111 in the u.k of which just 3 are GT500's. Amazingly in 2005 there was still 1398 left. These are shocking numbers and makes you realise that an original is one of just a handful left and well worth hanging on to. Usual places for sourcing are ebay, piston heads ax owners club and local paper etc. On ebay now is a black one which use to be mine, but not original now.

  • Thanks for the comments, its funny how cars inspire so many great memories particulary cars we have grown up with which are now rare and even iconic. I am in the process of sourcing another Ax Gt for myself and hope to find the right car soon. It has been 5 years since i last owned a fun hatch and have had many nice cars since but they all lack the magic of an older hatch like the ones i mention in the video! Good luck to you and your car future, Cheers Joe.

  • Wicked vid mate. I wanted one for years n years before I passed my test in 2001 now you've ignited my fire again .

  • Thanks for the comments, well wheel wise there is 2 main optons. You can either have the wheels refurbished and polished by a local firm, although many now are reluctant to finish with a laquer coating because it will often perish. So i opted to stick my spare on and do them one by one with a fluffy head from B&Q paint strippers if required as some are painted and wire wool. Gradually once they are stripped you just keep rubbing and polishing with wire wool and metal finishers like Autosol!!

  • great video. some mint gts

im restoring a 1991 gt sportif at the minute.

can you tell what process do you go through to get the wheels cleaned up

  • Thanks David, yep your right they are bloody rare now. If you are a regular ebay user you will notice between 2/4 a month are normally offered for sale. Where as 8/10 years ago you would get many more matches, but still a lot fewer than say the 205gti. I guess thats because the Pugs sold in far higher volumes and were made for 3 years longer so hence the current situation. I still crave one more AX GT and once my kids are older and we have some spare cash i hope to live the dream again! Joe.

  • I had a grotty Grey one 8 years approx ago, still miss it! Don't see many nowadays

  • Nice video. I bought a brand new AX GT in red (G reg) when I was 19, I felt like king of the world, can't imagine how nervous I was driving it out of the showroom, all my mates wanted a drive. I've had a fair number of cars since, last being an Audi A4 GT, but aside from that car the AX was the most reliable and exciting to drive, it was so nippy and fast. It's nice to know that people still appreciate the beauty of the older cars, they had so much character. Thanks for the memories :o)

  • Joe Try a 106 Rallye :D

  • what a brilliant video. Love your passion Joe and its great to have the drive and enthusiam you clearly show.

    Brilliant stuff..................

  • have any for sale now?

  • Joe, you like talking don't you.

  • i luv ax gts ive owned 2 it was my first car the problem i found with them was that they chew drive shafts. i had multie spoke 15s on my second 1 and lowered to the floor looked mean

  • @wookieonfire Yes your right they do love chewing up Drive shafts, most of mine had knocks and clicking under load!! Although if you know someone who is clued up you can change one for under a £100 all in.

  • I still got my G reg black Ax Gt (stuck in the garage now). I had it lowered and sprayed the rear lights black. Was always racing it and getting pulled over by the police! Was great fun.

  • Got mine in 1999/2000 and I htink I payed about £1000 aswell.

  • I love this video so much!!! I have got my own ax now, the 954cc version but, planning to get a supercharged hayabusa engine fitted in eventually which should be absolutely manic! Performance brakes, suspension, strut brace, quickshift, alloys, classic corbeau seats as i want to try and make it a subtle looking car (at first) and more engine mods.

  • man i love my Ax, we have such history together.

My mom´s first car was one, my dad got mine in 96 as a gift from my great granny who was one month away from turning 100!

Later he passed it on to my brother who cruised around europe with it for years.

Now all these years later he gave it to me and i treat it like a treasure!

Currently it´s getting fixed cause an old bitch rammed fer Slk on my door and pushed me against a wall...

But fear not, we´ll be rolling again in no time =)

  • amazin vid m8 i love these cars and its people like u that inspire me to get 1 for my 1st car..... My uncle had two ov em a 1.4 gt and a gt turbo both blow me away n i now love them

  • @ITzRAPID Hey glad you are feeling the vid. I still love cars from this generation and have to say the late late 70s 80s and early 90s are my fave years for performance Hatchbacks. These days i have a couple of little girls and we drive about in a Black 306gti-6 which is brilliant and great value considering the spec and power. I really do want another AxGt soon as my own 2nd car and will plan to do so later in the year!! Cheers Joe.

  • Awesome vid, never known much about the ax gt, I alos have a soft spot for cars from this era, they're just so involving and fun to drive even when you're not going particularly fast, the french hot hatches during this era were just phenomenal

  • nice video, had 3 0f these cars. Sadly about 10 years ago the first time i put my foot down in mine i lost control and hit a tree lol. Loved the car too was a great hoot. Had 2 more after my accident. I then bought a saxo vtr and could have cried when i drove it from citroen glasgow at the time, was so disappointed with it. Would absolutely love to get my hands on a good one now. Keep up the good work

  • Ax forever +23

  • Excellent video mate!

  • I got a ax 1.4 gt in super awesome condition, and a saxo 16v vts..... those are my favorite boy-toys!!!!!!

  • @Pathfinder7298

They are! because you only have money for bimbo cars!

  • I've only got a 1.0L Dimension nd that goes like the clappers. I can only imagine how fast the GTi's go

  • Okay.. i got an 1.4 gt whit carb my is from 89, got loot of problems whith mine..

  • Hey Joe! Just enjoying your video again. Fantastic piece of work. Mine's currently out of action- suspect gearbox, not a happy place. Only thing that's gone wrong in 15 months though (apart from ignition coil). The car just makes me smile everyday! You NEED another one.

  • Hi Rupe's, yeah sorry to hear about the temporary glitch its just your AX reminding you its the boss! Im constantly keeping my eyes peeled for any that may pop up in sensible nick but still need a biggish family car for now and the smart car is perfect the rest of the time. In 3 years time the AxGt will celebrate it's 25th aniversary can you believe that pehaps the Top Gear lads might do something to help mark the occasion... as if?! see you soon matey Joe.

  • AX GT is fast actually. Its faster than 205GTi

  • Seriously??

  • Yep, the AX GT weights under a ton, and the 205GTi weights about 1.1ton. so its like Caterham.

  • i went in a ax gt years ago and have owned a 205 1.9 gti, the ax felt faster lol!

but i would say they were pretty even

  • and i almost forgot, the AX and 205 are brothers

  • in holland i driver a citroen ax 1.1i drives just want a gt :P got a sunroof tho and central door locking

  • your passion for the ax should be an example for other people to follow with their choice of car

i own a r5 gtt and you cant beat the fun of the light french hatches pf the 80s era

  • Hello again, R5 hey what a great car now worth a small fortune if in collectable condition. Perhaps at some point a manufacturer will have the balls to re-produce a design classic such as the 205 gti. With the minimum of modern saftey devices and a good balance of power. One of my modern faves is the fiat 500 Abarth its right up my street and ticks more boxes than most these days. It only has a small engine and feels really interactive aand chuckable unlike your 2.0 alternatives.

    Joe.

  • Hey can I ask a question of u?

U obviously have great knowledge of fixing and maintaining AX's, and I was wondering where would be the best places to get spares?

I'm currently trying to get my old 1988 AX GT back on the road but I'm struggling to find parts. Most urgent is a driver floor panel but also a radiator. Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  • @Praet0r87 Ebay! currently over 350 dedicated AX GT parts and over 5000 for the AX generally. Good luck.

  • hi again! the r5 is indeed is a great car, sadly let down by budget barryboy diy tuning service giving them a bad rep! but they have amazing character that only french hot hatch owners understand and im sure you will definately understand,

personally i dont think the cars of the 80s will ever be reproduced, they are just too damn unsafe and raw to catch on, but rawness was probly what made these french hatches so great!

  • this is a great vid and i watched it again, i know a few people who are fond of the axgt so i will be linking this vid to them

its nice to know people with your passion and dedication exist out there

  • love this mate! i love ax gt's

this is coming from a guy who has owned a pulsar gtir!

  • Hey good to hear your loving the AX gig too, my vid is doing well of late and ive had an influx of comments recently must be us guys staying in more now its winter!! Cheers Joe.

  • Love the vid! There is something special about cars from the late 80's. So simple yet so much fun.

I've got an '87 AX 1.4 with a lowly 37k on the clock, but it's getting hard to find spare parts to keep the thing running, even in the scrap yard!

  • Bloodyhell thats seriously low miles, is it the mighty 1.4 GT or the Tzx! There is a black GT on Pistonheads with a mere 29k on the clock although seems to have fallen into the hands of a money maker?! I am hoping to find another at some point but as you say there tricky chaps to find now but that only adds to the fun of these charming older cars. Keep flying the flag, and thanks for the comment.

    Cheers Joe.

  • Nice little video, and i can still remember the reg's of my 2 axgt's no1 - h271hvu no2- j237yub and also used to run a website called axgtworld, but im not sure if i could own 13 of them ( i moved on ) but yes if i could find a cheap one to do up i probably would, but the sad fact is axgt's have more or less been destroyed by boy racers... getting rare they are and its a shame too... infact i would say you have more chance of finding a good r5 gt turbo than a good axgt nowadays :(

  • Greetings from Holland.

I own a '89 AX GT (formerly carburator but now with 106 1.3 Rally head & intake on KDFi programmable motormanagement) and those cars are great.

Indeed, it's about the feeling of speed, being involved in the cars handling. Once you've driven it you can't forget about it.

Sitting in the AX nearly standing still feels as fast as the Xantia Activa V6 I owned a year ago doing 200km/h. It's a feeling, not a fact.

That's what makes it so charming.

  • i think it is great what u do im 15 and i have a green ax dimention p reg 30000 miles i wanted 1 sence i was 10 and i love my 1 when im 18 my nan is going to give me her mr2 same as yours i would like to get a ax gt in the futeur

  • any body know how to remove the casette player out of the AX? great video bdw

  • i need to know that as well!!!

  • @XGreatestTutorialsXx tape machine should have two little holes on either side and a pair of wire removal tongs with it- you just poke the tongs into the holes on each side and pull the unit out. If the removal tongs are not present try and make some out of stiff wire- all they do is fit into the holes and push the securing lugs out of the way to free up the unit. Good luck.

  • AX is the best car of the history

  • This video is excellent! I have a 95 Ax Memphis 1.1i and to be quite honest i wouldnt swap it for anything of the same engine size, this car is great! It only has 77k miles on it too! and these things dont properly run in until 120k miles! haha.

    Great video though!

  • I had a grey 91 mk1 AX GT sportif, almost exactly like your one... I feel really guilty now cos I drove it to the tip rather than saved it.... :-( It had done 168000 miles on the original engine, clutch and gearbox though. I recently got an Ibiza GTI 16v and was expecting it to feel way quicker than the AX, but when I first floored it I thought it must be broken. The AX felt so much quicker and was way more fun, even though it was much slower.....

  • i have an ax gti. its my everyday car and my autocross race car. but lately i've been having electrical problems. someone please help. just message me.

  • great vid, check out my bebo profile billy_brown_r5gtt ive had 13 of these badboys. great power 2 weight ratio! vtr killers! say bye bye sri's too! pmsl leave me a comment.

  • Im 17 and my sister gave me her ax M Reg & i was like omg i cant believe im driving around in this all my mates haves punto's and saxo's but to be truthfull i love it! its not a GT :( only 949cc but i wouldnt swap it for any other car!

  • Well if ur anywhere near Scotland dude, I have a spare GT engine and gearbox complete with uprated twin-port carburettor lying around. Was gonna give it to my mate but he's wasting his time on a civic instead so I guess I'll sell it :)

    Anyone interested?

  • Thats mate but scotland is a wee bit far for me and my ax to go :P ...

  • I'm not wasting my time on a Civic. LOL I'm going to look at an ax tomorrow, so let's talk baby! woop woop

  • Everything you said on this video is EXACTLY how I view my first car, a white 1988 AX GT. Absolutely brilliant tribute to an amazing car. Still got the old AX, currently undergoing a serious track-orientated overhaul.

I'll be sure to put some videos up of that. People need to see how great these cars are!

  • Classic! A lightweight classic meets a heavyweight passion. I think its great that this often ignored classic is being given such exposure. Joe and his collection of AX hippy/happy friends have shown us all the rewards that can be found in AX ownership, I heartily recommend you all to AX heaven. I should know I have twelveteen of them. Their names are, Henri, Pierre, Squirrel, Sasha, Carla, Bushbaby, Hugo, Ivory Tower, Kevin, Francois, Ringo, John and Clump. Happy motoring! Yipee!

  • the best car on the road ax gt ive got mine with big 16" wheels, lowerd, stiffer, exhaust, bigger carb and KnN i just cant get rid of it i love it more than life it self i got other new cars and alot faster but just not the same noway

  • nice video!

awesome collection of cars as well!

    keep up the good work.

  • Excellent video i have to say.

welcome to the club tho, i've had 3 AX GT in a Year's driving license. All three 5 doors GT, 2 mk 1 and a mk 2 with carburetor, I still own a mk 1 and the mk 2 carb, i completely rebuilt the mk 2 it was rubbish :)

Check my acccount for LOADS of AX GT videos :)

nice to see someone like me :)

  • Fantastic. Brilliant. Thank heavens for people like yourself Joe! A true ambassador to the superb AX GT. The motoring world would be a better place if it were for more dedicated people like yourself. So you'll be getting another one soon then eh?! Top darts. Your friend and colleague, Swiss.

  • Brilliant! Especially love the intro! And may many more small sportscars pass through your capable hands Joe...

  • Hey, this man is a legend. he has dedicated hi early life to the Citroen AX GT, I think that the the video is brilliant and every time i watch the film it gives me goose bumps all over. I know how you feel cause i have owned an ax and it was a thrill to drive EVERY TIME! Thanks for posting this video for all time it will be great to watch in the future, especially in 30 years or so........

  • Wow at last we have got this masterpiece on here. This was made and produced around 2004-05 by fellow 80s hatch fan and mate, Ben Jeens Williams. Ben earned himself various accolades, as this was one of his final productions towards the end of his degree. I have been hoping my dad would find a way of finally uploading this and now here it is for every AX fan to enjoy. A huge thank you again to Ben for doing this originally and to my old man for the dramatic bonus opening!!! Peace out... Joe.

  • Yeh great. it's a really good feeling
