@55stevieboy2010 Dubstep is based on powerful bass notes, and these headphones have slightly less bass than what's neutral. You also need a very powerful headphone amplifier for these to shine, yes.
Hi! im really hoping you can find the time to answer me this question because im struggling to find an answer from anyone....
Im producing dubstep which is a bass'y style of music and im looking to buying a pair or k702's so i can check my work, i know these have flat bass response so may not be perfect for listening but are good for producing right?
Anyway my question is, i use a new high end macbook pro, will i need to buy a headphone amp? i use a pretty decent external soundcard...
@VinylSamuraisMusic monitoring? Allen and heath xone xd-53 would be better. or any AKG DJ product. K702's are more your personal audio/listening pleasure kind of headphones. the allen and heath are amazing though, my mate has some and he's a dj of sorts.
Im about to buy these tight now! Thanks for clearing these up for me. I need headphones that will help me mixdown a track and take them off and it still sounds the same!
You should have clarified the fact that you don't just plug those suckers into an iPod. you need REAL studio gear to hear those babys' full potential :)
@ElectronicAether Invest in a serious sound card (ex. Asus Essence STX) and compress your CDs in FLAC and you''l enjoy the full potential. The Essence STX costs ~170$, wich isn't a lot compared to the price of your headphone ^^
@Satfgk How can headphones have a sensitivity? they arent mice. You're talking audiophile BS this sound card is a high quality DAC+AMP so it powers them fine. And impedance has EVERYTHING to do with driving them. You don't know dick about electronics.
@Zwank36 You don't have to be rude. Sensitivity in the headphone driver usually represents how linear the headphone will perform with different setups. And I don't know about your soundcard, so maybe it is perfectly fine. Impedance is really more about how powerful the amp has to be, not necessarily how loud and well it will drive the headphone. as I wrote earlier, low impedance headphones like this AKG model is as tough to drive as the Sennheiser HD 800.
Sensitivity is not "audiophile BS". Sensitivity (or efficiency if you like) is actually a specification. For example, I have a subwoofer with a sensitivity of 97dB.
Which states that it will require an entire watt to get 97dB out of it. If it can take 300w/rms we can do some simple math to find out how loud it can get. 97dB/1w 100dB/2w 103dB/4w 106dB/8w 109dB/16w 112dB/32w 115dB/64w 118dB/128w 121dB/256w
Max of 121dB @ 256w, in theory at least. That will be at a certain freq.
Last week I was visiting europes biggest retail store. I tested about 25 headphones in their headphone studio. I actually wanted to buy the "Ultrasone Pro 900" which I heard only great things. But I was floored how much better the AKG 702 sounded. This headphone stood out of all the other big guys. I left the store with the AKG 702. Beside it's great sound I was also blown away how comfortable they are to wear! Light as a feather. No more hot ears anymore. :-) I don't get paid to say that ;-)
I just wanted to say that the k702 are not open back but closed back. the k701 are open back. That's the main difference between the two pairs besides color and the removable cable in the k702
You are half right. It requires both wattage and decibels to determine your volume. Often speakers will be rated by their sensitivity or efficiency. This is measured by decibel per (mili) watt, or dbV (decibel per volt RMS). Like he said, the wattage may be much lower than dj head phones, but the precision will be so much better. If your looking at getting reference headphones, I am sure they will still go loud enough to do ear damage if you push them for an extended period of time.
Because the acoustic decibel--the decibel (dB) being the unit of measurement used worldwide to quantify the acoustic loudness of sound--has a peculiar relationship to amplifier power output measured in electrical watts. That relationship is called "logarithmic."
If a sound gets louder by 3 decibels or "slightly louder," it takes twice as much electrical power from your receiver or amp to produce that modest increase
If you create music, especially in the electronic synth arena, then mixing with a great pair of reference headphones is a good idea considering 60% of the world music listeners now use headphones (i.e. iPod, Zen, etc.). Never skimp on these things, if you want to actually hear what's actually going on in your mix, then pay for that quality.
I'm a total headphone noobie and my mom bought me these for Christmas. I was wondering if you knew a great headphone amp for under $200 for the k702s?
AKG 702's are the best value in high end headphones on the market. They are transparent, offer a natural/balanced presentation that rivals much more expensive headphones.
NO these are NOT for DJ work, open back. Studio use, ONLY of you have a properly isolated studio.
Very neutral headphones. Superb value. 701 and 702.
Well, I have no experience of the K702, but the K701 was not for me. I had them for about two months before I sold them and went back to beyerdynamic DT880/2005.
I find the K701 not so responsive, playing well only in very loud volumes. When playing low, most of the bass is gone and the clarity is severely reduced.
Because they are open, they let some sound in (need a silent room) and they let some sound out. Being near a microphone can create audible feedback which is not just bad, it is catastrophic.
These are only meant for audio engineers when mastering. In fact, most audio engineers master with more than a pair of headphones. They use many so they can guarantee decent sound, no matter what equipment a listener uses.
Im suprised youre showcasing these cans given your electronic music background. They apparently not suited to this genre due to the missing bottom end. Your comments would be appreciated as I was on the verge of buying these until that little fact surfaced.
it's because this forces us producers to make that bottom end extra solid. :) if you use a headphone that already has some kind of 'bass boost' on it, you simply can't hear what you're doing because everything will sound phat.. even if it's not.
@TurKdiRty Interesting theory although I think you mistake the word skill with luck. How exactly can you produce an accurate bass sound when you cant hear it? Look at any frequency response graphs for these phones and you will see I am correct.
@TheRealPhoenix also having just looked at the graph if anything the headphones will make oyu make the bass heavir. its only db difference from 100 to 30hz and htat's only cos it exaggerates it between 100 and 600. and even so, you dont even have to worry about room acoustics. once you're used to them you can move house and not spend 3 months getting used to the room again.
i have some k240 studio that i use on the regular and i love them, highs and mids are wonderful and just enough bass if you have good drivers or amp. I use my laptop and my creative notebook soundcard and they are perfect. I dont really need that overwhelming bass like in the monsterbeats(and nothing else). I dont think these headphones are just for the studio though, these are reference headphones not studio headphones, you just need an amp make them sound beautiful. ima get mines in a week

Apart from that, Beats by Dr. Dre by Monster Cable cannot outperform the great headphones brands: Sennheiser, AKG, GRADO, Denon, Shure, Etymotic, Audio Technica, Beyerdynamic.
Beats, by Marketing Cable. Tinny mids and tinny highs, endorsed by Dr Dre. Better off With Sennheiser HD800 or the lesser HD650 over the Beats if overwhelming bass is your thing. I Have the K702's and the clarity is so great it's like being in the same room as the the person playing the instrument.
What a stupid comment. Why? have you tried them & compare them? Or is it just cos MonsterCable tells you that "nothing can't beat the beats" through their advertisements and you just believe the marketing?
for this amount you may find copies of pro quality h phones. My recomendation is to save up and get well known makes insted of cheep coppies. A wise investment as the cheep copies will not last ! j
my headphones that I've been using for almost three years gig after gig and have never failed are Technics RP-DH1200's excellent headphones, way better than the so called standard pioneer headphones as far as quality and isolation. They cost me about $120 American. I'll be playing a club with the music so loud you can't hear yourself talk but when you put the headphones on you can't hear anything but whats in the headphones, all that comes through is the bass thumping at your chest.
But still, I think they are not that suitable for music with much bass. Nearly every Hi-Fi freak will tell you that they are awesome for classic music, but the typical boom of normal DJ headphones may be missed (well, DJ headphones might spoil the music a bit, these won't)
sort of agree, but as these are for monitoring in a studio enviroment or for radio they do not need to be turned up and so in turn your ears get to hear true sound as it is and not a loud sound asociated with dj related headphones. thanks j
yeah, I agree, definitely the true reason for these headphones :)
btw. one real nice thing abuot them is comfort. As it's not a closed design there is very low pressore on the side of the head. Very nice for listening long times
I think sometimes you go a little too basic, everyone that has bought a computer, got the internet and is watching dj videos on youtube, know what headphones are.
I'm thinking audiophiles with high end DACs could also make use of this, not just studio users. The detachable cable's a big plus, and I love the fit of AKG headphones (just slides on).
Anyway, the open-ended design would mess up anyone's mix...since you'd hear the monitors and the cue mix together at full volume. Best of luck trying. I was thinking the 270mkiis were more what you'd be interested in.
I would fully recommend these. I've got the K240's and from a production point of view, they're the clearest and 'flattest' headphones I've ever had. The only bad thing is the cable. It's removable which is good as you can replace it but costs around 35quid!
i'm found myself more confused after watching this

To those who don't get what this guy is saying, 'to monitor' music is to basically get the actual sound of a song without any aspect of it hyped-up.
For instance, the bass or treble, amongst others, are not boosted like many 'consumer' headphones do to make the sound better than it actually is.

NO output of headphones and speakers is not measured in WATTS. It is measured in DECIBELS.
Start using proper terms. Misinformation is not good to educate the masses, they will be even more confused(bloody hell).
Headphones pushing wattage! LOL headphones "push" SPL measured in dB (decibels).

not so such about the fact you say you miss fraction of seconds with studio monitors, but yeah nice headphones indeed

What headphones would you recommend for DJing for about 20-50 EU ?
grizzlee1107 3 years ago
for this amount you may find copies of pro quality h phones. My recomendation is to save up and get well known makes insted of cheep coppies. A wise investment as the cheep copies will not last ! j
ellaskins 3 years ago
thanks, looking forward for more DJ headphones :)
grizzlee1107 3 years ago
well K702 are not recommended for DJing in the club dont u think ? ..because they are Open ended and let the sound in n out..no isolation.
good for Home usage and creating mixes because they offer a very accurate sound overall..
but even then these lack the bass compared to Sennheiser HD650
tushar310 3 years ago
my headphones that I've been using for almost three years gig after gig and have never failed are Technics RP-DH1200's excellent headphones, way better than the so called standard pioneer headphones as far as quality and isolation. They cost me about $120 American. I'll be playing a club with the music so loud you can't hear yourself talk but when you put the headphones on you can't hear anything but whats in the headphones, all that comes through is the bass thumping at your chest.

shit those would be sick headphones to have.
EraofAwakening 3 years ago
they are totally awesome :)
definitely one of the best headphones.
But still, I think they are not that suitable for music with much bass. Nearly every Hi-Fi freak will tell you that they are awesome for classic music, but the typical boom of normal DJ headphones may be missed (well, DJ headphones might spoil the music a bit, these won't)
nice review with a good basic explanation!
keep on the good work
sinnFeiN 3 years ago
sort of agree, but as these are for monitoring in a studio enviroment or for radio they do not need to be turned up and so in turn your ears get to hear true sound as it is and not a loud sound asociated with dj related headphones. thanks j
ellaskins 3 years ago
yeah, I agree, definitely the true reason for these headphones :)
btw. one real nice thing abuot them is comfort. As it's not a closed design there is very low pressore on the side of the head. Very nice for listening long times
sinnFeiN 3 years ago
I think sometimes you go a little too basic, everyone that has bought a computer, got the internet and is watching dj videos on youtube, know what headphones are.

DJLordstar 3 years ago

Headphones=10-39,000hz
the adult human ear=20-17,000
Do they have such a wide range of response so that they can produce the usual 20-20,000 that much easier?
I'd love to hear these babies.

And bigdima, it's $450. Start saving.

personally i love their mics as well.

AKG is a quality brand. Great stuff.

I would fully recommend these. I've got the K240's and from a production point of view, they're the clearest and 'flattest' headphones I've ever had. The only bad thing is the cable. It's removable which is good as you can replace it but costs around 35quid!
