I took the fastest run on this video and recorded it on a digital rif decoder. Slowed it down to 1/4 speed and timed 16 notes with a stop watch. Did some math and found out that his fastest run is 16th notes at 271 beats per minute.

Searched around on you tube for the fastest speed burst I could find for Manitas De Plata and did the same thing. His fastest run is 16th notes at 284 beats per minute

The only problem I have with this guy, is his speed bursts are always accompanied by these "hey look at me" facial expressions, and they are often out of place in the context of the music. Check out Manitas De Plata Sangre Flamenco for a speed comparison.

Some flamenco guitarists spend abviosly more time on practicing timbre than others. Paco has a terrible tone, it's very sharp and treble. Not enjoyable to me.

@matrags I have opionions about the most things when it comes to music.. interpretation, conductors, works, musicans or whatever. He is a good flamenco guitarist, but i don't like his tone. He plays very close to the bridge with nails, it results in a sharp tone. It's not about critticize, it's rather a matter of taste. I personally prefer listen to Paco Peña. He plays more traditional, no display, just pure music.

@benfrancdesros Exactly. To be honest, i've never understood the fascination people have for shredding, they just want to be impressed by fast scales and have an idol. I want music and i don't care who is playing. For me, the musical expression is the only thing that matters. I know a guy who bought all the albums with the guitarist Lawson Rollins, even though he didn't like the music. It's sad.

Lo cierto es que en casi todos estos vídeos la escala es la de Mi menor o Sol Mayor y siempre hace lo mismo, sí, muy rápido, pero la variedad es nula. Esto no es Paco, Paco tiene cosas emocionantes y maravillosas, pero está claro, este vídeo ofrece lo que promete Paco, picados y velocidad extrema.

@Ruben37 Primero, parece que "el muy rápido" fuera algo que hasta el carnicero puede hacer. Algo "elemental" que es fácil de lograr, como algo despreciable... pero la realidad es que Paco además de tener una genética muy particular, escuchó desde la panza de su madre el Flamenco y tuvo maestros que fue superando uno a uno. Revolucionó la música en muchos aspectos.

the fastest runs 0:24 till 0:34 are NOT played with picado, because he uses his ringfinger in addition to increase speed. Using this technique one has to stay on one string because string skipping is too complicated.

it is totally ridiculous to cut Paco's music into pieces. He is one of the best and his music deserves more. But regarding speed of scales he has no chance in comparison to a versed pick player for example SHAWN LANE. Three finger picado is a good idea if you want to stay on one string only. I master both techniques so i can play the arbiter.

@pfss78 well if you have the base of hving played 4 singers and dancers in Andalucia, and have assummed the ´aire´ ´sentido´ flameco may be yes, bt that´s only the case of not even the 5% of players. I play since I was little in a flamenco family of southern Spain, & I teach flamenco guitar & frquently see people so perfeccionist with picados 4 ex, that the CAN NOT PLAY flamenco at all.Even they play the notes. cause the dont understand flamenco rhytmical conversation.

@pfss78 those play great picados, great alzapua, great rasgeos, great tremolos by separate, but they are unable to play flamenco as a whole... They play 30 diferent picaos but they don;t even know how to follow a singer... when change slightly a cante,... and are not even able to play with sense... This video may contribute to make that illness more serious... Sure not the case of Paco...

@pfss78 if you want to learn which is the effect of a picado just pretend the efect of ' pies' of a bilaora ... It means a lot of strenght and a rhytmical vawe... But the perfectionist of picaos almost everytime forget to do that ... so it has no worth ... Once you know how to do that wth easy picaos you may use this video, but never in advance to that...though it happens frequent;y the other way round
