  • thumbs up if you think 65 people need their asses whooped with a bamboo pole

  • I didn't know musicians got this good.

  • Incredible!

  • wat a beautiful voice! im glad she won the grammy!

  • someone please tell me what is that skinny upright bass she is using? i've never seen anything like it

  • @solomtb727 electric upright

  • @solomtb727 There's sooo many kinds of more compact, electric uprights these days. Nothing beats a big giant acoustic though, in my opinion.

  • wow, what for music, what for voice. unbelivble

  • drummers killin!

  • untouchable

  • ekzotic

  • The inability to stick my hand down pants, due to my intense focus on this video, is FUNKIN' HELL.

  • 65 people are Biebtards with minimal taste in music. Quality over hype people!

  • Qué voz

  • before that grammy's i've never heard of her. i'm still wondering how the hell she won

  • Esperanza, Caro, Adele. I love them to pieces.

  • @90192100 ...yes its so much better. im sorry but we arent in the 1950's anymore no one listens to this stuff

  • @SuperDeck7 what a stupid comment x D I'm guessing you also think that no one listens to The Beatles, Guns n' Roses and Led Zeppelin x D poor fan of the justin the gay kid biever

  • @90192100 your an idiot, the beatles, guns n roses, and led zeppelin were not during the 1950's. get your facts straight before you say something and make yourself look stupid. Guns n roses was started in the 1980's hahahahahahahahahahaha. and i hate justin bieber but drake should have won over this girl, this music isnt even popular therefore she isnt the best new artist

  • @yugginntuggin first of allstupid asshole I never said Guns and Zeppelin etc were from 1950 you stupid faggot! your saying this isn't popular I don't know who the hell is drake I never heard a song from that faggot I don't know what he sings and who the hell she is and another thing asshole grammys aren't a popularity contest they're a talent constent... your just an asshole if you're saying she shoud have lost bc she's not that popular, well I know her but that drake?! :D stupid asshole

  • and everyone knows drake and justin bieber........but no one knows this girl. and another thing, guns n rose, the beatles and zeppelin dont play jazz so why did you bring them up?

  • Awesome!!! What song is this?

  • Just saw her on Austin City Limits. No comparisons. She and her jazz are simply beautiful.

  • *Cries out of sheer joy*

  • YES, Esperanza is the shit...BUT THAT GOD DAMNED DRUMMER CAN GET SOME!

  • holy crap..

  • This is... BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She so cool,i falling in love with her.

  • She so cool,i falling in love with her

  • DELICIOUS!!! !!!! !!!!

  • love the first track...Rochelle is killing it too!

  • I love how tiny that bass's body is compared to other upright basses, I wish I could buy one of those from over here in the Philippines. I love you Esperanza! I'm a teenager, and usually supposed to be listening to pop and rock songs, but instead, I play bass and sing in a jazz and blues band. I hope someday to be like you. :)

  • June 21st - June 25th - Esperanza is performing at The Iridium in NYC and there is a Ticket Giveaway on their Facebook application : iridiumjazzclub

  • @MrStrawhatlegend reality check, man

  • Wawwww

  • Watching this in 2008 must be this ultimate hipster wet dream.

  • @chaosmaster07 ughhhhhh she is way to mainstream now :/

  • @MrNinjaSpartan jazz mainstream in today's world? not ever!

  • Her music is just unbelievable. I usually don't buy CD's, but I'd like to buy an album from her! Her music is so charming, so unique. I'm glad she won! We need more "old school" singers like her right under the spotlight. Esperanza Spalding you definitely won my heart :)

  • Wake up you people who coment on you tube!!!!! I heard of this girl a year ago on TV I went straight out an got the cd. She deserves her award all the way to the bank. Someone who can play jazz bass an sing like that-- WOW PURE GENIOUS.

  • ok, This is beyond words cool, but why is there only a part of each song? If this is a sampling there should be some information on how to get the whole thing. please, this is great. is there a dvd? a cd? what? i want it? this is very frustrating. gggrrrrr

  • very nice..support our youth

  • Yes, she's a local gal from my city, she's insanely talented and SHE BEAT OUT JUSTIN BIEBER FOR BEST NEW ARTIST AT THE GRAMMY'S!!!! Thank you God!

  • so many reasons why she is better than bieber

  • The first time I saw this video all I could think is "God damn I want that drummer in my band"

  • Here is what I don't understand... If Esperanza was not one of the most physically beautiful people in the world... She WOULD NOT be nearly as popular. People just die over her... but I am not as impressed when I close my eyes. I am not impressed by her voice at all.

  • @signguy2010 This is the second video I've seen you posting this non sense. Get a life man! If your not impressed why do you keep watching her videos you loser!? Ur just a typical low life youtube hater.

  • @signguy2010 : Who cares if you're impressed or not ?

  • Comment removed

  • I must acquire her music.

  • AND she sings? Wow.

  • Really great stuff!

  • WHAT! she's amazing !! amaziiingg!

  • Drummer Lyndon Rochelle reminds me of Elvin! 'Nuff said!

  • she really embodies body and soul,awesome!....

  • @Keithlovescake

The singer's name is Esperanza Spalding, and the drummer's name is Lyndon Rochelle.

  • The fill at 1:01 blows my mind

  • Alright... I'm gonna go out on a limb on this one and say I officially decree Esperanza the Princess of Cool right now.... I"m just so in love with all of her music and talent... and yea Big Ups to Drummer man... just blowin up the spot n breakin them beatz off proper like.... Mhmmmm....

  • Esperanza ven a Venezuela a dar un concierto si? por favor ven en cuerpo y Alma! Body and Soul!

  • 61 people fail! for not liking this! smh

  • Thank the lord she beat bieber

  • Is Esperanza the name of the drummer?

  • @Keithlovescake ...........fucking dumbass

  • @Tu51ndBl4d3 May God bless you.

  • I don't know who to watch more, Esperenza or her badazz drummer Lyndon Rochelle. He is a BEAST!! Cot DAYUM. It definitely makes a huge difference when the front person surrounds themselves by outstanding accompanists. They push, they feed them that energy! They drive it. It's amazing and just something that can't be replicated using pro-tools.

  • I am so proud of this lady. What a far cry from rap and pop. And the bonus is she can speak; without saying "ya know what ahm sayin" after every sentence. Thank God for Esperanza Spalding.

  • could that drummer be any better?

  • @liennto - That drummer is so good it's frightening.

  • @Brilliantbeing

Yeah that drummer got the Elvin Jones licks down, he is badazz! Awesome and I love how they take this wonderful standard Body and Soul in 5/4 time and she sings it in the original key something many vocalists don't do. Esperenza is the shyt. She's awesome! She can do anything she wants because she has the musical chops to back her. When you are a true musician, you can play any genre of music. Record companies don't know what to do with you, because they can't box you in.

  • @nancydrew5 - I couldn't say that any better. I truly believe Esperanza represents just what her name defines; HOPE. There is something in the air in the Arts that is pointing toward progress.

  • @liennto it could if he was John Bonham!

  • @liennto he could be brian blade

  • @sheysway123 I just noticed that it says his name at the start... Lyndon Rochelle.

  • @liennto

no lol i meant that brian blade is better :)

  • @sheysway123 haha gotcha... BB is a genius on the drums, its true. How about Chris Daddy Dave...? All these cats are so good, they dont deserve to be compared. This dude is great to watch.

  • I HAD A GIRLFRIEND LIKE HER A MULATA

  • @bettermangdl

In the words of Miles Davis: "So What!"

  • @videolover61 they are so hot and fuck very good! :)

  • If Sade and Beyonce combined and sung jazz, this would be the outcome.

  • @changles no, it's an electric double bass. A fully acoustic double bass has a much bigger body, but due to this one being electric it's a lot slimmer, as the resonant qualities are only needed to effect the timbre, not the volume.

  • @Changles is that a joke? .........

  • Is that a bass violin?

  • not even on the same stratosphere... I'm finally hopeful about music! thank you Esperanza...

  • Yo, this woman is dope sun! She's got it goin on and on! I tell you right now, this woman is a jazz "great". She is a legend in her own time and from now on an all time cultural icon. Amazing! Ella é bonita e marviosou! Belesa!

  • She's good!

  • spalding has talent unlike a 16 yr old boy who hasnt gone through puberty yet. Compare for yourself!

  • @JimmyJim359 So you're saying you're better than Justin Bieber and he has no talent? I hate crappy, cliche pop music too, but ALL professional singers have more talent than people who whine about justin bieber on Youtube.

  • Comment removed

  • @Skeedapeed shes not a no name I mean in the circles that only know bieber sure they've never heard of her but she is the modern day mingus, ella, and coltrane rolled up into one...and if you don't know who they are than you probably would never want to stumlbe across a gem like Esperanza anyway....fact is that she is a phenom and biebers songwriting/musicanship is mediocre at best....Esperanza is the truth

  • @613lnm You can't compare her to them, in terms of either innovation or skill.

  • @Skeedapeed fyi, the Grammy's purpose is not to acknowledge who you know... I think it has more to do with you know... music and stuff...

btw, I had never heard of that Justin dude until Esperanza won...

  • @Skeedapeed You R ridiculously stupid.

  • @Skeedapeed if they hate canadians explain how Arcade Fire won best album.

  • @Skeedapeed Yawn. Will people stop thinking that awards should go to who is more "recognizable" and not who is more talented. Not to mention, you are very delusional and bogus if you think bieber is the most recognizable star in the world. There are plenty of athletes (Tiger Woods) and hollywood actors (Tom Cruise) who fit that bill before bieber.

  • @Skeedapeed Justin Bieber fans, like you, make their own idol look bad. PLEASE keep up the good work so we can pick on you all. it is really fun. ;)

  • @Skeedapeed The Grammys are about how good music is, not about if it's popular music, because 99% of pop music today is all musical trash.

  • @Tennisers That's why you don't the good stuff this on there.

  • @cjfl1962 I cannot understand what you said. Seriously, I have no idea. improve your english

  • @Tennisers Sorry, there's no excuse on my part. What I meant to say is that this is good music and that's why you won't see is a main feature on the Grammys. A bit of sarcasm on my part.

  • @agrangent bad comparison. Erykah doesnt have the vocal range as Esperanza nor can she play multiple instruments and sing in 3 languages...but I hear what your sayin.

  • boring!!!

  • @martygwest wow that was ignorent

  • @martygwest actually there are about 10-12,000 voting members that are peers of musical artists, some are artist themselves, recording engineers, session players... etc....not all old farts.

  • never heard of her until the commotion at the grammys, glad she won, she has talent

  • @lovekittys100: Errr, no.

  • @lovekittys100 lolol's! Now I can start my day.

  • GOOD GOD THAT DRUMMER IS AMAZING

  • Awesome that she lets her hair grow natural, & doesn't do all those horrible straightening things which are the fashion

She's a kick-ass musician, as well. Glad the Grammys came to their senses

  • Ok girl. I see you. I'mma go get those albums now

  • REAL MUSIC YESSSSSSSSSS

  • I love this woman! She is the Mozart of her generation!!!

  • A collaboration between young jazz trumpeter David Dunbar (google) in Denmark and Esperanza would be off the charts. He is also host of the Maddog and Dave TV show. They could be called The Essie & Dave collabo.

    -------Baton Rouge, LA

  • FINALLY!!! a real talented artist!! iv'e been waiting for someone like this for years!!

  • NOW THIS IS A WOAMN

  • wowowowo wwwwwoooowwwww she is so talented

  • From her Funky Hairstyle to her voice & skillz....... I'm definitely in Luv wit er.....

    : ATTITUDE)

  • I want to marry her and give her my seed.

  • damn nice hair

  • I'm not a Jazz music fan, but I love her just for the fact that she beat Bieber and made all his fan girls angry. Anyone who makes BIeber fans angry is great in my eyes. Also she does have great talent and I always appreciate talent even if I'm not a fan of her style of music.

  • Baby, baby, baby ohh

    Like baby, baby, baby noo

    Like baby, baby, baby ohh

I thought youd always be mine, mine (oh oh)

This is why Justin Bieber didn't win. Just because you have a legion of adolescent fangirls lusting after you doesn't mean you write good lyrics. I thought The Grammys were about the music, not about how many fans you have. While the guy had some valid points, his full page spread article is just self-aggrandizing @#$%.

  • WOW she is so talented. Why the HELL did I only hear about her through angry bieber fans??!!! f-ed up man.

  • @CaramelCleo well at least they're good for something

  • @CaramelCleo I think it's because Jazz receives about 6% market share of all albums sold. It used to be more popular than it is now 2 reasons for that: 1. it's very complex, and requires some knowledge & commitment to enjoy 2. it's easier for the companies to market & mass-produce stuff like JB's (or Lady Gaga or [insert name here]) I call it "McMusic" because it's the musical equivalent of fast food. There's a reason it's called the Music "Industry"

(ps- I've been an ES fan for 3+ years..)

  • @CaramelCleo "Why the HELL did I only hear about her through angry bieber fans??!!! f-ed up man"

Because mainstream music, don't push real talent, real music. Those in the know follow the underground artist most of whom are not commercial. Record companies don't know what to do with them because they can't present them in a certain way. Artists like Esperenza Spalding can do jazz, pop, rock, indie, classical, she has the chops and can do it all, and record companies can't handle that.

  • @nancydrew5 True. I hate that she falls under radar like that. I would much rather my kids (if the existed lol) to fall in love with music that was written with passion in mind, not just the dough.

  • @CaramelCleo LOL! Finally...the Bieber fans did something right! They spread the word about Esperanza Spalding. LOL!

  • I'm mesmerized with her talent… Incredible!

  • wow, i unfortunately had no clue this young lady was out there making such beautiful music. the first time i have/ probably ever will say thank you a major award show. hell to the yeah for this chicka!!

  • my ears hurt. kbye.

  • From a Belieber: I think Esperanza Spalding is VERY GREAT!!!! & she should not be getting hated on, like I said she is talented. With that being said I still do not think she should have won "Best New Artist" Why? She had a album out in 2006 (Junjo) & in 2008 she really is not a "new artist". I really like her & will now probably listen more to her, but if no Justin or no Drake what about Florence? I dont listen to her everyday but she is very talented & not just "mainstream" just my opinion.

  • @LuvLife2night I think that the runner up would be Mumford and Sons.

  • bieber have been owned =D

    her voice is great!

  • i'm not impressed

  • hey 10kfists i would have said the same thing if bieber won.

  • LOVELY VOICE

  • not my kinda music, but shes good.

  • @10kfists if your talking about real talent..then yes.

  • @10kfists Ha ha ha!

  • @10kfists

just because you can't enjoy a particular genre of music does not make it "shit". she is a very talented artist and deserved that grammy. learn to appreciate other forms of music....espcially the kind of music that is not as mainstream (ie. jazz) thus not recognized as much as, say, hip op, r and b, pop, and rock.

  • @230kimmie I just think that the majority...is looking for real music with distinquishing instruments..not just beats..with

words thrown together in a haphazard...way..bit what ever you like...you like..I'm from the R&B generation and not everybody likes that either..I love jazz

  • ahhhh my freaken eeears

  • America finally shows some class. Congrats Ms. Spalding

  • 53 ppl have a small dick like JB.

  • i'm glad she got grammy, because now i know her name and i can discover this beautiful music

  • thank god Justin Beiber lost. im only 18, and im not a HUGE fan of jazz but i listen to it often enough (thanks to my 2 brothers who listen to jazz just about everyday) and when i heard beiber lost to a jazz artist, i got even more happy because not only is jazz awesome, but the fact that it shows fame doesn't necessarily show talent, and that also jazz aint THAT big anymore and this HUGE pop "star" losing to a "no name". justice is served with a bit of scat

  • @access1992 - Very, very well put. There is indeed justice in this. A message was sent to the listening public.

  • I remember prince saying in an interview that esperenza was the most talented person he had ever met, that means a lot coming from prince.

  • Outstanding!

  • wow..that scat solo at 3:42 is amazing! So...different. Love her! Thank you Grammy's for enlightening me with this woman!

  • @MiriusTube what that about scat porn?

  • @robmacdini1 i love your comment

  • @robmacdini1

It's called a freaking afro. Stop being ignorant.

  • Beautiful music from a beautiful woman. Truly a masterpiece.
