DO NOT GIVE THEM THAT CHANCE!!!!! DO NOT FORGIVE THEM!!!! DO NOT BE STUPID!!!! DO NOT GO BACK!!!! they don't deserve a second chance. you deserve better. WAKE UP!!!! it's YOUR life, not theirs. They are wrong, stupid, evil and dangerous, and your father threatened your life. His image in the eyes of strangers is more important than his son, THEREFORE he is stupid, dangerous, etc. NOT SOMEONE WORTH making an effort for.
MAKE AN EFFORT FOR YOU!!! Not easy since you grew up in a family that would not make an effort for you, so it's probably a new, unknown feeling. Get help from your peers, esp older peers. NEW LIFE!!! Start from nothing? It's not THAT scary. I'm more than twice your age. I would love to be your age and start from nothing. And before you know it, your NEW LIFE will be filled with more REAL, TRUE, POSITIVE stuff than you ever got in 20 years with them.
If I were at this guy place I would hire a lawyer sue my parents, sue the people who put in place that conversion therapy and kick them out of the house.
By the way if there is a hell... the parents of this guy will go straight there, without parole....
He's kinda cute, and sometimes i feel like that with my family, as they have openly said how dissappointed they are in me. And I said the same thing - I can't change what I never chose. Best line ever and the complete truth. The question is though....would you be straight if you DID have the choice?....erm...no...sorry.
Fucking hell I hate his parents. There aren't words really that can be said I just wish I knew Sam irl because there are people who aren't assholes and he should be around them.
This is horrifying! I think Sam is very very brave and smart for handling things the way he did. i doubt if i would have in a similar situation. i am inspired by him. :)
I really admire you that you still give your parents a chance. I just can not believe what parents are capable to do to their children in the name of god . Why so much pain and cruelty put on a 10 year old child. I remember being teased as a poof from other children and it already hurt since at this age I did even no what gay means. For me, my feelings where just natural. Society imprints all these negative thoughts and feelings into us gays and then it takes years to get rid of them again.
So glad you shared your story Sam. If it is one thing I've learned in life it's that people have lost the ability to accept anything outside of their own comfort zone. I truly do hope your parents are able to realize their wrongs. You are an amazing person for being able to forgive them for their incredible ignorance. Keep spreading your story!!

May your parents come around to reality. If not let them go - build your new lief and familiy --- Do not let this get you down -- I took my family 20 years to wake up.... Know you are loved, know you are good, know you are worth while.
OMG! Sam! Diane McClintick (you knew her) and I(didn't know me) are amazed at how strong and happy and kind you are after all of that! Diane was close to your family and is sorry she never realized any of that was happening! We both applaud you for everything you have overcome to be the amazing person you are today. Lots of love from your lesbian friends Diane McClintick and Alison Snyder!
OMG, i just realised how easy my life is my MUM always new since i was ten and watched the fashion channel upon hours and on my 13 Th. birthday i had one fiend over (a male) and i only spent my time with him, SHE is amazing. WOW i cant imagine it being you and going through what you have been through YOUR TRUELY AN INSPIRATION :D
I can't imagine how he can have any desire for connection with his family ever again. Please -- keep on walking and forget they ever existed. What a horror. It sounds as if you have moved on -- keep on moving.
What hateful, fearful parents! And they're afraid Sam's 12-year old kid brother will catch 'teh gay' from him!!! I have news for the parents: if the older son's gay, chances are higher that the younger son will be gay as well. And it's solely by chance, not choice. I the little bro is gay and they find or figure out, what is more likely than not is thay they'll become even more psychotic and sociopathic! Sam should bring charges against his father over the gun threats for the little bro's sake.
You are loved so much, Sam, by your friends and extended family at K-State and in Manhattan. It may take your parents as long as forever to get themselves "straight" with their God...and you may not live to see their reconciliation. I hope that you do live to see your parents accept you, but (and I know you already know this) don't wait. Live your life to the fullest. I admire your Spirit and willingness to forgive.
It would be in the best interest of every GLBT person to honor and cherish you for your indomitable strength and love – you are the personification of charity as defined by Paul in his letter to the Corinthians chapter 13 – you are a gift from God!
You are the bravest young man I have ever had the honor of experiencing on YouTube! You are a loving son who refuses to give up on his parents. They are blessed to have you as a son. Your unconditional love for them could only come from a higher POWER. Continue to love it makes you very powerful!!!!!!
these therapists and his parents (especially his father) must be reported to the police! especially the whole gun thing. not to mention the cruel and unusual treatment.
@jazzhey94 the therapy didn't happen in America. His family was a missionary family, so it probably happened when they were in another country where homosexuality is illegal. There's nothing you can really do about that =/
@TheYamspot the therapy was done in Iowa....I know Sam pretty well and sadly this was all here in the U.S. but to see how he turned it all in to a positive is great! He now attends MIT pursuing his masters and Ph.D. in Nuclear engineering and is constantly organizing lgbt events and groups to help others like him
Seriously; what a tale of tragedy and courage. I really feel bad for the parents, who I believe will be isolated by all their children as each reaches adulthood. They (the parents) must be terrified beyond words. -- Samuel, I really hope you adopt a load of kids!
My God, what a story. Stay strong, young man. That is so sad that your parents treated you that way. May God bless you and I hope one day your parents at least treat you like a human being deserving of respect and love.
your like many gay ppl whos family is the gay community & theres nothing wrong with that. love is where you find it. Kinda reminds me of the great movie latter days.
I think you should join the "It gets better" project. your story is important
The one thing I hope for him is that he has created a family all his own
, no one has to accept the family they were born into. Sometimes those birth families can be death to you!

Takes batshit insane bullshit from his family.
Still forgives them and actively seeks to repair his relationship with them.
