Filmed at the "Rainbow", Finsbury Park, London. A ginat former cinema, they ripped the seats out and converted into a live performance venue in the 1960s. All the top bands played there anmd it was famous for its "starry" ceiling. It closed soon after this and was derelict for ages until one of those dodgy inner-city-style churches took it over. Glad it wasn't demolished but shame it isn't still in general use as it was a great venue.
Saying Hazel O'Connor copied Lady GaGa has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have heard in my whole life. You couldn't make it up if you tried :-) :-) :-)
I miss the 80's & its gr8 bands/artists who had an image & a concept album to go with it all...getting up on stage/TV with jeans & t-shirts [what 1 wears @ home] don't do it for me...sorry...make an effort pop ppl! Gaga is probably the only 1 doin' it & yes giving her respect to all who came before her...& to those who say she is unoriginal, ask yourself WHO IS? in todays pop music world? Everything has been tried & tested! Its all a gigantic MASH-UP these days!!!
I loved Hazel and Toyah .....named my Daughter after one of them ......Gaga can't be compared with them they had songs with lyrics and were not just presentation, they have substance
i loved breaking glass when it came out and saw a wonderfull lady hazel o conner who was full of giving freedom to each and every one say what you feel live how you want too i felt lifted from were i was at that time thank you hazel x
This flick is finally being released in the States this August on DVD. Hope it has the final scene which for some reason was deleted from my VHS copy. Great movie, such a great taste of the early eighties.
Yeah, thats what i was getting at, prob didn't make my point well enough. Looks like another Disney rip -off, i remember the song being in the charts and the film being at the local ABC ( remember those?) and all predated tron by at least 18 months to two years. Saw HOC at Glastonbury, not on stage, just will her friends and spoke to her. Lovely lass. Hope the re-release the film soon.
I took a young lady called Debbie to see Hazel O'Conner at Hammersmith in the early 80's. Went to lots of concerts back then but this was by far the best. There was a giant skinhead dancing in the aisle right next to us shouting out racist and Nazi chants. She gave it back to him over the mic and totally blew him away to huge cheers from the audience. It was just like in the film. We never could decide if it was real or part of the show. Wonder what Debbie is doing now?
I remember watching this movie on Night Flight in the Eighties....this song has been an earworm for me for the last two years....I finally "found" it again. Sadly, this song was cooler in my memory. Still, its better than most of that crap on the radio now.
i have enjoyed this ladies work since i bought the soundtrack from the film back in 1980 i bought 2 more albums of her work that i still own , great singer

LMFAO Who's the DUMB-ASS saying this is copying Lady Gaga!! This was the 80's at it's very best as most of you know. Even if you didn't like Hazel O'Connor, you couldn't deny she was a LEGEND way ahead of her time. Her lyrics stranger than fiction, intense peformances larger than life, and a REAL sense of creativity totally lost in todays repetative music ... something the MANUFACTURED Lady Gaga could NEVER do and NEVER will...period!!

@GreatestGaGaVideos more like 30 years ago… I don't even think Lady GooGoo knows who Hazel O'Connor was, and I don't think she cares, GagGag is making millions dollars, whilst this talented lady disappeared from the charts, oh hum.
@brobito Hey dumbass, do you see the date of when this was made. I don't think lady gaga was even walking when this was made, how the fuck is she copying gaga. I love gaga. But why does everyone compare everything to her.
@brobito LMFAO!!!! HAZEL WAS AROUND WAAAAY BEFORE GAGA WAS BORN!!!! My husband was in her band in the 80's... check your dates before you make yourself look stupid. GaGa was influenced by many of the great women of the 80's (Nina Hagen, Hazel O'Connor, etc)
@mrsandyq hi I see it was a year ago that you made this comment ,...but loved the band and Breaking Glass...GAGA would not live in that era with the lyrics that were fantastic and the bands that were out of this world,...there are a few that come up to matching the quality to me,it's always been said that Baker Street by G.R. was the best sax playing of all time but WILL YOU is always the best for me....x
The American release of "Breaking Glass" was shorter than the original UK release (which I've never seen).
I've read that Hazel's character has a nervous breakdown at the end of the original movie, but in the American version it ends right after her performance of "8th Day".
As the audience is applauding, the camera cuts to a freeze-frame close-up of Hazel's troubled face, and then fades to black. The song "8th Day is then played again during the closing credits.
I used to see Hazel most days & was lucky enough to see this tour de force live several times... those were the days my friends... I think thats LA Richards -the blond in the audience?
It is simply fantastic. I'm fortunate enough to own the film on DVD so am able to enjoy it in it's entirety frequently. So looking forward to seeing her doing "beyond breaking glass" at Manchester in November. This lady is a true legend to me
i saw her a while ago at notts county football club FANTASTIC!and somewhere i cant rememba lol cant wait to see her on the 80s here and now tour my reason for going, still love her songs
While i don't agree with your sentiments you are right, she was a product for this film and plugged by the record company. She could sing, play and had great performing talent so she was more than just a mucisian. She was not a regular gigger much before Breaking Glass. She is however a beautiful and genuine person who has had a very interesting life both before and after this film.
Lene Lovich was totally bohemien. She came in 1979, did two really catchy numbers that you couldn't get out of your head for days. But yes, very different from Hazel O'Connor.
Lloyd Webber was bad - this is amazingly vacuous camp pop, quite bracingly so. Gotta love the femme techno, rally with adoring massing thing...a super star was born...as weird and foolish looking now as it was at the time. Great stuff.
I loved Hazel oconnor when I was a kid and bought her album, watched the film etc. I didnt realise any meaning to her songs until now.......she was/is a wise woman.

It's a shame that the U.S version doesn't have the same ending as the U.K version. When you consider the story and take say... Kurt Cobain and run 'em side by side they're sort of spooky. All too often we become the very thing we were rebelling against in the first place. Somebody needs to put this out on DVD!

was an amazing film , really captures the time in Camen perfectly, glad to hear that Hazel is well , she had a rough time of it when fame took her unawares , love ya Hazel xxxx
Amazing film and superb music. You can get the DVD, but the originals sell for over £80 on e-bay. You can buy pirate copies for a lot less, but not sure what quality they are. The DVD is no longer avalable to buy new, sadly but there are rumours of a new release. I hope it's true as I don't want to pay £80 plus.
This may have been mentioned before but doesnt the 'story' of the song seem very familiar? by this I mean the matrix and man creating machines to serve them but it all goes wrong.
Its difficult to get these days theres no official d.v.d. release so your best bet might be a v.h.s. copy from e-bay or taping it if you ever catch it on t.v.
It doesn't seem particularly 'humble' to write-off an entire decade's music. 'Real' music - wow, is music only 'real' if you like it? That really doesn't seem 'humble'.
and world war 3. it was safer as a kid back then .Not like this post 9/11 crap we now have to live under not knowing if we are gonna bombed it the streets or on the bus.

"Breaking Glass". One of the best musical films of ALL Time! Hazel helped clear the cloud's that had me blinded. Thank-YOU Hazel.

I remember seeing this movie and thinking it was brillant and excellent and the music being fantastic. Nice to find it here.
"Eighth Day" was my favorite song from the movie and reminds me alot of a song by Flock of Seagulls called "Man Made"

Now you dont know who the bad guys are any more, the USSR had a uniform and a flag back then what about now?
you have more chance getting bombed on the street and not knowing how fucked you over.

This may have been mentioned before but doesnt the 'story' of the song seem very familiar? by this I mean the matrix and man creating machines to serve them but it all goes wrong.
zooly101025 3 years ago
vice-versa - this was from the early 80's - long before the matrix. More Orwellian though...

After this film there was no way to go but down.
crawfish999 3 years ago
where can i get this on dvd?
Dorothynum1 3 years ago
Its difficult to get these days theres no official d.v.d. release so your best bet might be a v.h.s. copy from e-bay or taping it if you ever catch it on t.v.

From one of the best movies ever. So hot, it virtually ended Hazel's career. After this, how can you do better?
crawfish999 3 years ago
What do you mean ended her career this film was really the start of her career.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

It doesn't seem particularly 'humble' to write-off an entire decade's music. 'Real' music - wow, is music only 'real' if you like it? That really doesn't seem 'humble'.
