This song reminds me of my parents who were teenagers in the 1940s.When I was in my teens I got into a little spat with my Mom concerning "today's song lyrics". She thought Rock music had silly words.I shut her down pretty quick however by reminding her of this song-one of her favorites! Now as an adult myself I have come to absolutely love these old jazz vocal groups. What a sound.
The first time I heard this song was on "Twin Peaks". Leland Palmer started singing some wack lyrics that I thought he had just invented. Later on I discovered it was this song.
Heard my dad sing this song when I was a kid. I never knew what the words meant until today. Very clever and funny. My such old and warm memories. Thanks for the post.
First time I heard this was in Eastern France, during the war. My buddies and I had found some pretty poor Bordeaux wine, and were listening to the English dinner broadcast. We laughed and laughed! Shows you can have a laugh amidst horror!
OMG!!! I think I'm gonna cry!!! I was 1yr old when this was recorded and I can still remember my dad RIP carrying me on his shoulders in his army uniform and singing this to me !!!! Waaaaa!!!! TenStarsplus !!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting this it made my day hearing it again!!!!!!!
Wow that's a cool story! Yeah I'm only a mere 41, and I love this song, I actually love a lot of 40's music. Very nostalgic. Also reveals how are songs were more innocent in that era, compared to today. Can we go back in time?
Uncle Jack loved this song and so did a lot of the guys coming out of the sordid battlefields of WW2- just wanted to kick back and enjoy something silly.
Oh, I love this song. Reminds me of my dad and his parents singing it to me when I was little. Such a sweet little memory. They would not tell me what it was really saying, though. So, I wondered for quite a while what a kiddle-d-divey was!
allthough it sounds like mais eats oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivey, a kid will eat ivey too wouldn't you, the real lyrics are mairzy doats and doezy doats and litle lamzy divey, a kiddley divey too, wooden shoe. lol its called a mondegreen(misheard lyric).
my grandma passed a couple of years ago and she would always sing this to me and then tell me about world war 2 when her husband, my grandpa, who i look very much like, was fighting. My parents forgot the name then my summer reading book was all about WWII and it sung this when the war was over. I ran into my moms room and showed her and we started crying. Ah... Memories!
Wow. My grandpa used to sing this song when I was a kid. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone elso sing it but I was able to follow along note for note. Thanks for the sentimental journey...no wait, that's another song all together :)
It might be off the CD "Mairzy Doats 44 Wacky Hits"... which is, of course, a Clean CD quality recording of this song and MANY others from this period of time!
