The 2001 Seattle Mariners at 116 wins beat the 1998 regular season record held by the 1998 New York Yankees at 114 wins, but failed to win a championship after losing the 2001 ALCS to that same Yankee 2001 version Yankee franchise. If someone breaks the Bulls record and doesn't win a championship, the 1996 Bulls record is safe. Case in point with the Yankees.
