I can assure you that this is not an Airbus, as we have winglets on the Airbus, and we have more spoilers for in flight operation. Deploying spoilers is as normal as drinking a glass of water. We use it to slow the plane down, kill the energy and momentum (particularly on A345 with heavy weight) or to just increase the angle of approach. At times controllers give us short cut which requires us to get down on our profile path. On A345 you can use them with full flaps extension, others are limited
yeah i agree with the guy before me:D and as he was in a turn, maybe it was necessary as the slower your'e going the tighter your turning radius, like driving in a car... at high speeds you loose lots of your maneuverability:)

sometimes the pilot needs to slow down a little during descent so it is partially deployed :-)
