Goddard is a utility - from that perspective that's something Judd and Pendles will never be. If coaches had the choice between those three players Goddard would be chosen most, simply because he can fit ANY team structure. Brownlow will go down between Jelwood (will win a Brownlow at some stage) and Judd this year.

He consistently gets a lot of the ball, is high in the contested possession count, and creates most of the play off half back for St Kilda, who have made the last 2 Grand Finals, 3 including the replay. He kicks goals in the forward line, gets touches in midfield, and defends well in the backline. Either you are a one-eyed bandwagon supporter of a different club, a complete moron, or both.

They are true midfielders, Goddard isn't. Played exceptionally well last year, but not on the same level.

@mickjoG i disagree. if they played extra time, the team with momentum in the last quarter (st kilda) wins, they may as well just hand them the cup. if one team dominates a half, then the other team dominates the second half, the team dominating in the second half will most likely win extra time, which is unfair considering they played as good as each other. it has always been a replay and considering that it has never happened in AFL before, and only twice in VFL, i dont think we need a change.

AFL is played in less than 5 countries around the world and I'm pretty sure its only played as a profession in Australia whereas football is played in every country across the globe with usually more than 2 leagues in each country, excluding the small countries that don't have enough people to fill in enough teams. @dplmussen1 In the context of things though, Goddard's mark actually affected the scoreboard. It was a speccie at the top of the goal square. If Barry didn't take that mark, it probably would have hit the ground and Sydney would have help it up for a win anyway, so I'd say Goddard's mark is the better mark, in terms of context and how spectacular it is.

@RobNoles79 Ablett isn't as good a player as he was now that he doesn't have the likes of Ling, Chapman, Selwood, Corey, etc. Franklin is horrifyingly inconsistent, Judd and Pendlebury are one-dimensional midfielders. Goddard succeeds anywhere he plays.. Do you even watch AFL? I am pretty sure that watching every game every week, analysing the stats and watching every show based on AFL during the week like I do would make it abundantly clear Goddard is the best of any player, even as a utility.

@nathanstorm7 Ablett is still as good of a player. He doesn't have the same players around him, so he is having to adjust his game style and learning to get the ball himself now. He is still young, and a great player who is only getting better. Judd/Pendles aren't "one-dimensional"... would you say that about legends of the game such as Buckley, Hird and Voss? They are true midfielders, Goddard isn't. Played exceptionally well last year, but not on the same level.

@sooot175 Judd had to adjust his game in a similar way to what Ablett is, I am confident Ablett will come out the other end and win another Brownlow Medal, he is too good to not do that, and I believe I mentioned not having the players around him. I was not thinking when I said Judd was one dimensional, I take that back. Goddard is a floating half-back-flanker but an exceptionally skilled player, he can be the best player in any spot he commits himself to as last years GF showed. (full forward)

It wasn't Goddard's fault we lost, he had a stunner that game.
As good as Lenny was BJ should have got the Norm Smith.
Most of the rest were passengers and that really got showed up the next week.

Such a mercurial moment. Not to take anything away from Lenny but I thought BJ was going to win the Norm Smith for sure.
In hindsight, I wish we had lost it that day by 1 point, rather than being put through another week of suspense and then the humilation which followed it in the Grand Final rematch.

@mackk007 yeah, but soccer goals are about 10 metres wide and the player miss them all the time... i'd love to see you kick an oval ball 50 metres and through the goals, bet you'd faila 90 times out of 100, and the ten you do get would only be from lucky bounces, soccer is passing the ball back and forth from team to team untill one player gets brushed by a feather from a passing bird and goes down and cries... then it starts all over again, it doesn't matter how many people watch it, it's shit

@mackk007 afl provides alot more excitement than fucking football (soccer, i will say this so no1 gets confused)... in soccer there are too many draws, and its too often that fuck all goals are scored.. where is the excitement? its non contact, no goals, only using feet, borrrrrriiiinnnnnnngggggggg.... AFL takes real coordination and skill.... anyone can kick a ball in a net and hope that the keeper doesnt stop it. if you had grown up with AFL and not soccer you would consider it the best game

@mickjoG i disagree. if they played extra time, the team with momentum in the last quarter (st kilda) wins, they may as well just hand them the cup. if one team dominates a half, then the other team dominates the second half, the team dominating in the second half will most likely win extra time, which is unfair considering they played as good as each other. it has always been a replay and considering that it has never happened in AFL before, and only twice in VFL, i dont think we need a change.

@nextpkfr Ok I'll give you a reason that's pretty legitimate. Football (soccer) has been around for a lot longer that AFL. AFL is played in less than 5 countries around the world and I'm pretty sure its only played as a profession in Australia whereas football is played in every country across the globe with usually more than 2 leagues in each country, excluding the small countries that don't have enough people to fill in enough teams. I would go on but there I've run out of characters.

The reason soccer (and so many other sports) spread when AFL didn't was because of the country of origin. Almost every sport that is played worldwide originated in England, because they had so much influence earlier in the last century. That's all there is to it.

@unitedclean04 actually, saying that nowhere else in the world plays it is wrong, there's a European division of the AFL, you can look it up if you like, sure it's not as big in Europe, almost unheard of, but it exists, and even so, just because it's not played world wide doesn't mean it's not a sport, and soccer can hardly be called a sport... there's no excitement in the game... the game's way too predictable, and everyone who plays is as soft as melted butter, fuck the money, AFL's better =p

AFL's doing a bloody great job then. Face facts, there's only two reasons AFL isnt as big as soccer worldwide. One, the tackling makes it unsuited to juniors. Two, it originated in Australia rather than England.
AFL was the FIRST codified football code, BEFORE soccer. Deal with it.

@dplmussen1 In the context of things though, Goddard's mark actually affected the scoreboard. It was a speccie at the top of the goal square. If Barry didn't take that mark, it probably would have hit the ground and Sydney would have help it up for a win anyway, so I'd say Goddard's mark is the better mark, in terms of context and how spectacular it is.
