Thank you so much for making this terrific video. I have always wanted to see the details of these machines in action. I've wanted one for 30 years! This is the best overview of Nagra machines I have ever seen.
You would think but no, the smaller the heads, the more they pick up background hiss, a modded Studer C37 in the UK managed to push the boundaries by offering 20Hz - 44KHz with a S to N or 109dB witch is better than CD, the machine ran 1 inch wide tape in stereo at an unusual 13 inches a second. The machine was re designed by Tim Deparavicini, said to be one of the leading designers in valve reproduction.
i know that these are irreplaceable, but i'm looking for either a r-t-r or digital recorder up to the sound quality standards of these machines. would anybody have any recommendations? i'd like to start doing field recording.
I hope you did not win unless you can do repair/maintence yourself. Nagra stopped making parts a number of years ago. Better to find a 4.2 (NOT a IV - the head mounts are different and the IV had three bad versions before they redesigned it as the 4.2 model which was produced for over twenty years. Lots of them are out there and parts and service still available in US.
Nagra are BEAUTIFUL MACHINES!!!!......my grandfather had one,he was a shortwave radio operator. He went nuts and gave it to some guy passing by on the street. SERIOUSLY.
I need stereo, personally I have become enamoured by MD Recorders, which work nice with simple stereo mikes and are pretty discrete at concerts. I have no experience with new solid state (digital whatever?) recorders. I bet they are just as good. But I need CD or near to it quality. I hate DAT!
Very nice video explaining these high end professional machines. I have always wondered about them. I see them on E-Bay, and they usually go for high bids! Now I know why! Thanks for the fine video, very well filmed, very well explained.
Thanks for posting this. I have always been curious about the workings of these machines. A few years ago, I saw a documentary about the audio archiving department of the US Library Of Congress. They use these machines for playback of very old tapes because they say they are very gentle with tape.
Great video, very informative. I have just purchased a nice nagra Iv-s tc and love it to bits. A really nice piece of engineering. I would like to trace a suitable service manual, but so far have had no look with an emails to Nagra GB. Any ideas? A am looking specificaly for the audio calibration information, so any pointers yo umay have would be very much appreciated.
I have a Nagra which I purchased, at an auction years ago, for £25. Unfortunately, when I got it home I realised that batteries had run inside !!!!
Is this correctable ?
I remember working on a production,a while ago, when a Nagra was dropped into the sea (salty water). The Nagra was swiftly immersed in fresh water for a few hours and then blow dried with a hair drier!!! As New !!
I recall the same happening with a Fostex DAT.....................F****d !
I accidentally put 4 star but I meant 5 star on the rater. Those are AWESOME machines, very god video, and those are soo nice Nagras. Quality... Where did you get those?!
I want 1 of these. I have been trying for ages to get one. I was using an Uher 4200 Report stereo machine. (I record sounds of engines). I have been using an Uher machine for recording engine sounds on container ships and stationary engines.
Love the sounds of the steam engines, especially the stationary ones, would love to own one of those but they are two high maintenance, Nagra were cheap last September but looks as if they have gone back up again.
I have a recording i made from some tug boat steam engines, and 1 froma 2500hp tandem cross compound steam engine. If you give me your email adress i can send them to you. Each clip is 30 seconds long and recorded 22Khz 16Bit Mono.
And i have edited thses to create perfect looping sounds.
The same with the IV and the III but the batteries are very flat in this video on the IV-S, if I had plugged it into the mains then the machine would have functioned better.
My name is Tonalli Magaña I am looking for the specs on the NS nagra (wich has been discontinued) do you have an idea where can i get them?? i went to the web site but there not there anymore
You should refer to Nagra directly on line. They have extensive manuals and specifications: nagraaudio DOT com/ Note;
A great deal of 'specs' you request are up to the 'Type of Tape', and its bias you use. I have produced sound products for over 72 major films using my Nagra III, and - still use it. iT - OUT-PERFORMS anything on the market today. , Gene Weed
...i love this video !!! i am a REVOX & Technics-Fan, but these are so beautiful machines !!! thank you, LES from berlin/germany

Wow, impeccable build quality! Would be unthinkable (and unaffordable) nowadays. Blows any current toss-away plastic garbage out of the water.

tapes could have been close to CDquality by using higher speed and smaller heads.

Beautiful tape recorders, especially the incredibly small Nagra SN
You have an amazing collection of tape recorders, thank you for posting
all the nice video's of your recorders, i think you have the biggest collection
taperecorders in the world.
Two weeks ago I bought a Uher 4000 REPORT MONITOR.
It is not so expensive as the Nagra tape recorders but it works also verry well.
I go use the Uher for recording congresses, nature sounds and motorcycle sounds.

Hi, I think the only thing you can do is sand away the damage, or replace the battery bay, other than that, I dont know.

FFWD on the IV-S only works in Playback 'with loudspeaker' mode (weird decision on the designer's behalf) it wasn't an issue with your batteries!
