  • Only people with very small penises have disliked this.

  • I honestly don't think that "VINYL" can impart a sound to music any more than a CD can. It's the process they use to make the record (Analog tape, 1,2, or 3 generations or copies of that tape, then they have to equalize and compress the sound to fit it onto a record.) Technically, CDs are more accurate to the original source, have better dynamics and better signal to noise. Problem is most CDs aren't made with the original mono master.

  • Smon and Garfunkel in mono sounds better than anything in stereo. I can't explain it, it's technically less advanced than an ipod but no mp3 sounds this good. I think it's because it has soul.

  • @chat099 Just remember that mp3 audio is compressed and it is a "lossy" compression, which means you do lose something in the translation. That's why I still buy compac discs, because although they are digital, at least the audio is not compressed (all the information is there).

  • @salchst not true.

Mastering is generally done either on tape or 24bit digtal file. CDs run at 16bit, and so music is dithered down to CDs from the master. You're not getting all the information at all.

Not to say that mp3s aren't a further approximation of the original, because they are.

Vinyl again, whilst an organic representation of the original due to being analog, still has a narrower dynamic range compared to the master; 24bit digital file or analog tape.

  • The most beautiful song ever written. I am 17 years old and I am posting this comment on the video on YouTube. NOT ashamed.

  • Dziękuję za piosenkę.

  • Nemo Shaw singing 'The Sound of Silence' - Mono Mix

  • Great version! Check out Nemo Shaw singing 'The Sound of Silence' - just out!

  • Love your stereo man. Technics for the win! Nice equipment you have out there.

  • Watchmen version!

  • in those days, the tube amplifiers could amplify both odd and even harmonics, the transistors only the odd. that makes a big difference

  • Powerful mix. You can feel the electricity of it...

  • I'm so glad I learned how to play this on my guitar yesterday. Now I know another classic :)

  • Amazing uploads... forgot how much pleasure there is watching great records being played.. many thanks...

  • What kind of electric guitar was used? I'm thinking Fender Stratocaster, because I can duplicate that sound with it.

  • All the techno talk leaves me lost but it's nice to know that there are people out there who know what's happening and like the same music I do . Thank you .

  • ahh man that sounds amazing i have it on 45 to and would not wanna listen to it any other way

  • i like the imperfection, the scratch, non digital.

  • Love this version, but can you by any chance re-upload this without using a volume compressor? Having the original dynamics would surly make this the best copy out there!

  • Sorry, but YouTube adds some of their own compression, as well as my video camera. Go to the Oldies Music Message Board and send me an E-Mail. Thanks! Spencer Morasch

  • @ianhawdon Another user that already figured it out.

Don't connect to camcorder because of DRC.

  • @ianhawdon gotta the same version, even the noise at the beginning is the same xP. Of course love it ;]

  • Wow, the quality. Amazing. Love it!

  • Check out my recording of this song. It is imported from England. I think you will enjoy the audio quality. :) /watch?v=fXUiqEVlSbk

  • WOW! Impressive! Thanks for posting this.

  • Oh, god. THAT BASS. Gotta love it.

I'm eighteen and even though I live in the digital age, I would choose listening to this for hours on end over anything my peers swear by. ("Racks on racks on racks"?) Also, this sounds phenomenal in mono!

  • This is how it should be heard.

  • Oh yes... This is the sound I was looking for... ^^

  • the person who disliked this - I WILL FIND YOU I SWEAR

  • @Okruuuch Do you need help finding them!>?

  • @MrSKSkill sure ;d

  • love it. you just get lost in it.

  • Thanks for posting this! Side B is We've Got A Groovy Thing Goin' , I believe. I posted the stereo LP version here:

    watch?v=fJvP4rtt4d4

Any chance you could post the mono of that?

    ~Happy Easter

  • The kids these days with their mp3s and iPods. I had to teach my 22 year old cousin how to work my turntable yesterday. I give him credit though; he appreciates the quality of vinyl over digital -- and he's a digital video/audio engineer working for mtv.

  • Wow... amazing...

  • You are right! This mix here is way better. I have a stereo version in one tab and this vinyl mono mix in another tab. Comparing them side by side, verse by verse. This you have here sounds like it Rocks more. Sounds like a different song almost and have carefully analyzed that it's the same actual recording. I guess a song mix does make a BIG difference! In fact, born in 1979, never cared for this song until now! The stereo mix makes the song boring. This one makes the song sound alive!

  • good music doesnt die. im 14 i know this song.

  • Wow! That bass is incredible! I love what you're doing WABCRADIO77. Sounds fantastic, keep up the good work! : )

  • Bloody hell ! That has to be the best I've heard. How did you achieve this ?

  • Great Record!!!!

  • If your have a direct amp as in no digitizing involved and mint vinyl albums or 45's the sound is just simply awesome ,completely blows you away

  • The ONLY songwriters that come tailgating Lennon/McCartney.

  • 45's did sound better

  • Now thats how I remember hearing it on the AM radio back then, more intense.

All the versions now available in mono/stereo aren't mixed like that.

I knew something was missing, and the extra guitar twangs.

I always remembered that bass line in it and the songs tempo is all over the place, guess they had trouble keeping time in the band, lol

  • This video has got me so into vinyl that I recently decided to start collecting 45s myself. I'm only 22 so vinyl is something new to me and I think I prefer it to the digital formats. Thank you for uploading this and introducing me to a great hobby.

  • this song sounds so much better on mono vinyl just sounds so pure

  • I really wish there was a way to get this on CD or download a high-res version!

  • a man~ memories~

  • Every 45 RPM Single was deliberately mixed with the intention that

most people would hear them first on AM Radio.

Many engineers would mix their 45's deliberately thru Car Speakers (Like a '65 Mustang to obtain a more Dynamic Sound out of their Mono Mixes.

What benefits MOST from these 45's is the Rhythm Sections. Drum Kits are louder to convey the beat thru a teenager's tiny TRANSISTOR RADIO. Most Labels STILL

mixed their 45's more dynamic up until about 1975. That includes many Jazz 45's.

  • OK, You got me. I've been reading the comments about how good this sounds over the other versions, and thought I'ld put it to the test. I went to my media player, brought up this song so I could switch from this one to the media player ,with just a click, and back again. This is the superior version. I encourage others to try it as well.

  • Great comment!

Another proof positive confirmation that vinyl - even though heard through a digitized source, still sounds better, and combined with the original analog mono mix, is just simply the best! Now imagine if you actually did an A-B comparison with a true direct vinyl source that is not digitized!

  • @WABCRADIO77 Agreed. This is mindblowing that a YouTube recording of a vinyl version actually sounds better than the stereo version in iTunes. I've never understood why people prefer vinyl until just now.

  • @WABCRADIO77

Actually it just sounds different. It might be more pleasant to listen but it doesn't mean it's more accurate representation of what you would hear listening to it live. I like the sound of vinyl record and I don't mind to get most accurate representation possible. Also I usually laugh at audiophiles (mostly because of their shitty unscientific methods of comparing sound and overpriced equipment).

  • you rock brother thank you SOMUCH for these posts!

  • wow m8 classic cheers ;))))

  • @ everyone who describes just how incredible this 45 sound image is compared to 33, cd, and worse of all the *remastered digital*,,ulchh..

this 45 is what we heard back in 1966,,the impact made its effects powerful on the youth...the soul of the music came through on these 45's and SWEPT US OFF OUR FEET..music became like a god.

    paul

    new oleans

    born 1956

  • amazing. the quality of this is unreal compared to digital.

    thank you.

  • I saved my pennies until I could go to Woolworths to buy this 45. I've been hearing that vinyl sounded better than tapes, then CDs, MP3s, & digitally remastered styles of preserving music. I thought it was BS. I understand analog radio sounding better than digital, & I understand the concepts explained below, but how that translates into sounding better than stereo I can't comprehend. When we got FM radio - we were in heaven! How can this be?!

  • The vocals sound much "wetter" here (i.e. more reverb) than on the stereo LP mix. It really suits the song, IMO.

  • They don't make music like this anymore!

  • @monkeywithissues You got that right! They make shit now.

  • @monkeeman1966 amen man

  • what kind of cartridge/needle do u use?

i have a crosley record player-rochester in CHESTNUT (brown) and a standerd NP1 Needle.

  • How is it that Simon and Garfunkel transcended from the 1960s better than someone like Donovan for example, who made music in much the same style, yet seems relegated to that decade? I like this more than Bridge over Troubled Water, BTW.

  • @MisterEvasion Better songs. Paul Simon is one of the best songwriters of the 20th century.

  • I may only be 16, but nothing sounds better than that crackling sound of vinal, classic.

  • Where can you find these old 45 singles today??? It's almost impossible!!!! And its a CRIME!!!

  • Are members of The Wrecking Crew providing additional instrumentation?

  • I have loved this song since I was a child, and will have to admit that this version does sound alot better on record. Thanks for putting this on the web.

  • Sadly, there is only one reason that these supurb mono mixes are not available on CD: Paul Simon himself. He has for years dismissed the mono mixes as "inferior", in his own words. These 45's, along with the entire Bookends LP, are FAR superior in their mono mixes!

  • This beautiful, haunting 60's pop song has always been one of my favorites from the decade, it's always been one that I could reflect to, the title says it all, and after four decades, it hasn't lost any luster at all, a true, alltime pop classic...

  • The drums sound awesome on this HOT MONO Mix that was played regularly on WABC and WMCA back in the 60's! Nice to see you back Spencer!

  • pretty sure the original had no electric instuments

  • Correct.

    watch?v=4zLfCnGVeL4

  • @spanky167 the electric sounds better than the original. thank their manager for putting in the electric instruments without their permission. thats why this song is famous.

    the "original" went largely unnoticed

  • OK I am part of the Information age, only 23. I just listened to the stereo version of this song and it sounded empty. In mono its chilling, in stereo its just another good song.

  • You are hearing a combination of two things:

1.) The source is vinyl, which was from an analog master tape - not an MP3, or anything digital.

2.) The mix is very different on the original 45 RPM vinyl record, that for reasons unknown, is not available today on any format - CD, MP3, whatever. Only by going back to the original 45 do you hear this MUCH better version of this great song!

  • @WABCRADIO77

yes great post,,this 45 sound is far superior to all digital,,...the soul of the music comes through on this 45...

  • @WABCRADIO77 What about the version that came on the original version of Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits. I believe they used the single mix there.

  • @bruceynz 23 is a very occult number. Believe it or not.

  • originally acoustic on "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." that version had a band overdubbed (in stereo on one channel), and that release was on the album "Sounds of Silence" in Stereo. This here is the special MONO mix from that album. This song was released previously on the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M...It was taken from their debut and electric instruments and drums were overdubbed by Bob Dylan's studio band on June 15, 1965 and released in September 1965 as a single. I NEVER NOTICED THAT vroom

  • I know of a used record store that probably has many of these things. They have TONS OF STUFF, and are having a ... 0:48 that 'triangle' sound I NEVER heard before... 45 rpm sale for $2.00 each. (we sang this in chours in 1983) I now understand about some songs being remixed for mono of this era, and you are right. some you can hear things you cant hear on the album mixes. The stereo mix is just the acoustic "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." with the band on one channel . That was released on LP...

  • In the second half of the song, you can hear how the drums speed up a little bit, then slow down, then speed up again, in order to keep pace with the original acoustic recording.

  • i cant tell...but the drummer is keeping up.

  • This one gives my sub woofer a workout every time. You can really hear the difference coming from the original 45 record compared to CD or MP3. Long live vinyl!!

  • Amen. I come from the CD era... but my father has "The graduate" soundtrack in Vinyl... and I just can put into words the feeling I get when you see the needle touching lightly the disc ...that 0:19 ... and the "rainy" sound in the back....For me... if I need to describe how happiness sounds like, that's the sound.

    Indeed long live Vinyl!!.

  • try the stereo mix

  • This is one of Simon & Garfunkels Greatest Hits. Recorded in 1965 i believe.
