the film is rubbish.it only appeals to pseuds.i love kaufman as well.if this is the best film you seen you aint seen withnail and i yet.i appreciate the time you took to review this though.but come on empores new clothes or what?
dude, you sum it all up so well, and i couldn't agree more with your review... But... (and there is always a but...) you remind me so much of roger off american dad...! so, all in all, you fucking rock dude!!! lol's peace and love to all x
Nice review. I think the house on fire represents the bad decisions women make in their personal lives when it comes to who will love and take care of them best. By the time her and Caden find each other again, it was too late for her from all the smoke inhalation/life decisions.
Great job, man. I literally just got done watching this film and was astonished by it. Yes, I am confused, yet at the same time I really love that movie aside from the fact that I don't entirely understand it.
p.s.- You got to meet Charlie!? You're one lucky man!

I think I am the only person in the world who thinks this film was crap. More people should be honest with themselves and admit when a 'genius masterpiece' is actually more like the quiet 'this is bad and I don't like it' thought that was niggling away at the back of their minds throughout the picture.
You clearly have a lot to say about this film, your physicality in the review is a bit distracting. Maybe take notes to gather your thoughts and really ground yourself in your body, and don't be afraid to record the review multiple times and do some editing, that's what digital video is for.
Nice review, although I would argue that the movie places more emphasis on the search for meaning rather than its themes on death (definitely not a minor theme). I love the intricate layers and realizes the genre of magical-realism from written literature. It definitely reminded me of the book "A Thousand Years of Solitude" by Nobel prize winner Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. (Definitely recommended if you haven't read it) Again great review. Any discussion about this movie is great.
Perfect review. I'm not a fan of Lynch's recent films, but I did like this one. It seemed to have more of a point to make. You nailed everything except you forgot to say parts are boring and yet parts are brilliant.
I know who directed it, knucklehead. But if you listen to the reviews, they compare his style to Lynch, who in my opinion fails over and over. This movie is better. Charlie admits he likes Magnolia and Mulholland Drive, which obviously influenced this.
I really need to see this. I've been looking forward to seeing it for a long time now. I love love love Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I think this is a film I'm going to really enjoy.
PSH gives a BRILLIANT performance which for me deserved a nomination for an Oscar and especially the script deserved to be nominated...but alas, not very many people have heard of this film...it's my favorite movie of 2008!!!
I think it's a little too much to say that there are parts of the film noone's going to get. But it sounds like you have to have experienced the process of writing a long work, in order to truly get it...
I agree with what you said when you mentioned that you'd be sitting there for a while. I went with four friends and we all sat through the whole credits, arms crossed, thinking. After we left the theater, we said "This needs to be discussed, but we're not ready yet." We got home, thought about it some more and finally sat around and talked about it. I plan on seeing it several more times as well. It was much an eye-opening film.
i feel very comforted by your review. i've discussed it with friends and i've learned a lot.
one friend said that he understood it completely thirty minutes after walking out of the theater. i don't think that's entirely accurate. this was a really great film.
I envy anyone who lives in or near LA/NYC because there are so many films I miss out on living in Washington. I'm sure SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK will play in Seattle eventually but I need to see it NOW. Great review!
youve been doing this a little longer than i have, and that was a more coherent review than i gave. so, props to you. i really really really....REALLY loved the movie. theres alot id like to discuss about it. i envy you for getting to meet him. thats pretty awesome. its only been 2 days, and its grown on me like mold. i dont know if i wasnt focused at certain moments or if there was some ambiguity. like at the end-who was talking to him? im seeing it again today, so ill pay attention to that.
I came to this vid just to find out how to pronounce the title. Good movie by the way. I loved all the layers

What was funny about this film? I'd like to watch it again but I found it so bitterly dull I don't think I could re watch it.

PS, the signed screenplay is very cool.

Hah, I am having fun watching all of the reviews of this movie.
Just a hint, the burning house has to do with the Burning House Parable in the Lotus Sutra. (Buddhist)
It is not about physical death, it is about psychological death and the spiritual path.
He has the one disease we all have; Life.

OH MY GOD.
that is soooo awesome.
makes me love this movie even more.
i've already seen it twice...i definitely have to go again.

Watch for a few other clues:
The goats in the cartoon and him being in the cart is also a reference to the Lotus Sutra and Buddha telling us we need to wake up.
The 17 years an actor complains about them not having an audience refers to the 17 lost years that some think Jesus spent learning.
The man who has been following him around for years is his mindfulness, or awareness.
We are seeing Cayden as Cayden feels, not as Cayden's material body.
