  • @bolder2009 O ok but are u sure ain't Stand was Release in 69 ?

  • Comment removed

  • Iz dis 1969 Smfh ????

  • @jwatts891 1973

  • Love this song but this is a relatively weak rendition.

  • i would kill for his hat!

  • Geezer from the Summer of Love...Grew up in Sanazay, the Haight just up the street...kinda. Saw SO many greats Joplin, Morrison, the Plane,Stones, Zeppelin...but best show I ever saw was Sly at Stanford just before he coked his brains out..Cracks me up that his tunes still pop up and you KNOW it's him and he's still a funkin genius..

  • I never forgot the words " Stand! Don't you know you are free? Well, at least in your mind if you want to be"! Solid!!!

  • This is such a great song, and it's fun to see everyone in the band looking so happy and righteous. Is that Michael Jackson in the front row right in front of Sly?

Hope Sly gets in good shape soon. All the best!

  • I have been listening to alot of Sly and the Family lately. Sly is a genious in my opinion, I love his lyrics. My favorite lyrics in in this particular song: "Stand! Don't you know that you are free? At least in your mind if you want to be".

  • timeless ! sharing this peeps @ occupy seattle....if you don't stand they will crush you..

  • great band except for one thing !!!! they were notorious for letting people wait . i was at a concert in a small arena in 1970 roughly and they were 2 hrs late then made us wait another hour before they came on stage . i vowed then id never go to another concert . too bad they eventually lost gigs because of it. noiw hes homeless living in a car karma i guess

  • My father was Sly's personal bodygaurd...... long story short. My dad says he brought down the house every show he did!!! Sly is a living legend.

  • I remember back in the day! local bands were killing this jam right here!~in B-More in Garrison Jr high School gym a lot of summers ago~They had a dance there! and the Music could be heard all over the neighborhood! the band was Kicking ASS!~with this jam right here! Man those were the days!!~

  • Kids, this is from the days when everyone was coming together, not breaking apart. Saw the Family Stone in 1968 and 1969 in gyms, everyone in the place danced all night (not sitting down, like concerts today). They had a great message, great vocals, the guy who invented funk bass (Larry Graham), were real family, and Sly was one great musical director. There has never been a better live dance band and they brought people together.

  • @marinman39 You know thats right! My kids WISH they had grown up when I did because they love the music from this era! When music had a message and vocalists had TALENT and could sing their ASS off! People back then were trying to make a difference and come together. WE had no time for racism and bigotry! These guys were great vocalists and real musicians. You went to house parties and concerts and DANCED and I mean danced to the music, and had a good time.

  • homeless ? sorry to hear dat

  • I also think that might be a young Michael Jackson in the audience right in front of the keyboards at 1:13 !!!???

  • @ObiteljMacka Yes, I think that looks like him and it probably is!

  • So sad to hear that the great Sly Stone is living in a van in Los Angeles, I just might drive down to the area he's been known to frequent and buy him a lunch and thanks him for all the great music he's given us.

  • @rocksinger45 God bless you for that.....hopefully all those in the music industry who have been influenced by Sly Stone(and I am sure there are many) will give the man a hand up in his attempt to get clean.

"Everyday People`` was the second 45 record I ever bought with my allowance as a kid....I played the thing to death, and have been a Sly Stone fan ever since.

Lets hope he gets back on his feet and making music again soon.

  • @FMHammyJ Bless you too...I've been sober 21 years now and I wish for Sly the same support that my friend showed me for him too....come on Sly fans show some LOVE for the man.

  • OMG this jam at the end is the best. great footage

  • Before the digital age, everybody knew how to not just sing but play instruments. And did both very well.

  • man we were so blessed to have experienced all this great music :D. i dont have any clue what these kids listen to today. but i know we were swinging :D

  • @jazzynet1 You know thats right! I was a young kid and then a teenager and I had all of Sly's jams! This was one bad brother and one bad BAND! I also have no clue what the kids listen to today! My kids listen to my stuff! LOL!

  • hendrix who? brown who? parliament who? sly puts them all to shame and then some.

  • @sharkclip1 I would say all those artists stood side by side during an era that welcomed diversity and experimentation.

  • @sharkclip1 when it comes to good music I don't make comparisons. I love Jimi, James, Parliment, and Sly for all of the individual greatness they've provided us. I LOVE ALL GOOD MUSIC :-D.

  • @sharkclip1 He is undeniably a genius, but to say he puts Hendrix and James Brown to shame is ridiculously stupid.

  • this tune always gives me goosebumps! yeah its that awe inspiring.

  • Sly and the family Stone were [ARE] one of my all-time favorite groups back in the early 70's- 80's. Albums i had were; Greatest Hits, Small Talk, Fresh, There's a Riot Goin on, cant remember the others right now... ;)

  • yes babies.

  • Bragging right's, :) seen him "71" .In "69" Sly was going to preform outdoor Grant Park . This is also the Democratic convention.Sly was a no show, chaos followed. At the" AragonBrawl" room(LOL) He was on time. No words to describe the music experience.. :P

  • Music with a message for the era!

  • someone is singing Oooooo in the video. LOL

  • One of my favorite funk bands of all times.....

  • Redskys if you are really that retarded you shouldn't be attempting to play music.

From what I heard its a piss poor attempt, maybe you should take up flower arranging?

  • the song is called and stand and sly is sitting lmao!!!

  • @RedSkys1992 3:18

    PEACE

  • @Eyemallfunkedup

    o cmon

  • 26 people don't know how to STAND !

  • and Cynthia was there all the way. From the spark to the dark.

    This is church.

  • Amazing, amazing music this guy made. He was the original Prince. Interesting story too, musical prodigy as a kid played keyboard, guitar and drums.

  • @ATeam192 >WORD! This man was the original PRINCE for real! I grew up with this group! This man and his family could sing their asses off anything. They took you to church and back! I saw them perform at the Apollo Theater and they brought the house down in 72! I read about how they started! What a story! Sly was a monster talent! I get goosebumps just listening to this song which is my favorite by them!

  • @debgirl12000 Great post. Thanks for the insight. They were awesome.

  • @ZunZaraVoMu damn straight, bought the sly stone boxset yesterday, heard him for the first time, impossible to be sad or down when these grooves are hittin you

  • the idea of kool went when shooting someone over a pair of nike's happened. know all that matters is who makes the the item and how the name can be seen on it. it's phat to be seen with stickers still on a yankes hat... no more jimmy or sly looking like they just left a movie set.

  • WHERE DID ALL THE KOOL HATS GO LOL

  • Wish he did not leave like he did but he had some great music. Is he still alive and how old would he be? Thank you for uploading

  • For a whole song using the same riff Stand ends with, check out Crowbar, Oh What a Feeling. If you're Canadian and over fifty, you know what I'm talking about. The further you are from that demographic marker, the less likely you'll know.

  • @Birkebine Professor Griff: Last Asiatic Disciples

  • Great song with a great message!

  • Love Sly and the Family Stone and this is my most favorite song. It's the truth that the truth makes us so uptight. Love his little laugh during this song. Awesome, awesome!!

  • love sly!

  • funny he's sitting down while singing for us to stand...lol im just bein a jerk. this song is amazing, classic! the jackson five have a nice version too

  • Great funky dance in the middle!!!

  • Man was I born in the wrong era.

  • greatest lyrics ever!!!

  • Sly did take us higher !

  • STAND: we are standing with you Sly. Always

  • What sweet souls Sly and the Family was/is. Soul. Soul, soul and more soul, Sly is soul. And what a performer-outfits, hats, moves, vocals, horns, they had it all.

  • What sweet souls Sly and the Family was/is. Soul. Soul, soul and more soul, Sly is soul.

  • TOO HOT.

  • sing it SLY!!!!!

  • I can't believe the audience is just standing there.

  • Stand, you've been sitting much to long, there's a permanent crease in your right and wrong.....fucking AWESOME.....

  • Iam latino and because of the anti'immigrant laws that happen today, this great song hits my mind everytime. Sly wrote an anthem that will never never die which has a harmony and melody that many new red neck cowboys singers will never have. This is the problem with music today. Many performers believe themselves that they are gods and they need to much for learning.

  • One of the best ever. We love you Sly.

  • That outfit of Sly's is absolutely the best .....Sly Stone the Cosmic Cowboy !!!!!!!!

  • One band I NEVER get enough of <3

  • This is an awesome song and my favorite song from Sly and The Family Stone

  • @Coastincolt

Prince learned from the best and became greater.

Prince did much more than any other entertainer in the last century. You really have to hear/see ALL Prince's work, bootleg or not, to understand this reason.

I do agree that Sly would of gone higher in the 80s though. He is an underrated genius.

  • My National Athem!!!!!!!!

  • Great music..and a message too. Listen to the lyrics and know that WE CAN do anything we want to.

  • sly is high as a kite!

  • Utterly a true genius . .. . . Way, way, way ahead of his time . . his music, lyrics, their sound, the Family Stone . . . blew away so many of the boundaries of that time musically, socially, & culturally . . .

  • @streetscaper69 You're f'n A right!! Sylvester Stewart ( a former San Francisco DJ, BTW.), aka Sly Stone is an under-appreciated genius, who would have totally ruled the 80's if he hadn't had his meltdown or @ least slowdown first. Hate to say it but, if Sly had stayed on top of his game, Prince ( & others) would have been totally in Sly's shadow!! Slys' sound is more organic & his singing is less stylized & more natural than Prince, IMHO. Sly was an original!!

  • " there's a midget standing tall and a giant beside him about to fall". what sly is saying is that there is nothing to big for us to conquer.

  • This is music!!!

  • MY MUSIC ALWAYS ANYTIME ANYWHERE.

  • some of you peeple out dare gotsta start thinkinjg wit your hearts not you heads. ebveryone in life has their own cross to bear. we gotsta stop all this hating eachother, and bangin and hangin and blowin up 1 and the other. life was and i hope still is meant to be lived in harmony and peace and dat good ole sayin love ye 1 and the other as i have shown my love to you. now stop wit all that gang bangin and shooting up, dah streets is filling up with the blood of your brothers LOVE AND PEACE, AMEN

  • @topcatroar61oliosc

    Too true.

No time for bad energy and hate... Turn life into a MEANINGFULL experience!

God save musica as a spiritual, political vehicle.

  • @andreaprodan you absolutely sum up the spirit of the song, well said

  • His hat is BLINGING. Thats the shiniest hat i have ever seen.

  • My favourite Sly song of them all. This crazy stuff could only have been produced in the Bay Area!

  • Lovin the 'fro! And, Sly, give my grandma her hat back...needs it for church tomorrow.LOL

  • what a performer. i dont even know how people talk let alone make great music on the amount of drugs he was on.

  • WE NEED MORE MUSIC LIKE THIS!

  • @sandplacer We sure do, nothing compares in todays music.

  • @sandplacer I so agree!!

  • @sandplacer .. yes i totally agree.. unlike this computerized crap flooding n the markets today.. earth wind n fire, tower of power, average white band to name a few.... HEY WHERES THE MAN FORMERLY KNOWN AS PRINCE!!

  • @sandplacer STAND!

  • I want his hat

  • I mean tmack43. (you got that right...lol)

  • tmack....you got that right. Have a good one.

  • shit- I love this song....

  • There's something truly magical about Sly's music. I can't put my finger on it, but no doubt, it's there and it's beyond words. Thanks Sly; hope life is being good to you.

    PEACE

  • Fine. Thanks very much.

  • GREAT GROUP!

  • Fantastic!! It's hard not to smile when you watch Sly sing this!

  • No Larry Graham? When is this from?

  • There was no precedent for Sly & the Family Stone

  • Love this recording.

  • An anthem of human dignity if ever there was one.

  • The change at 2:23 is immense on the studio recording...what a groove ! ! !

  • i haven't heard this since i was young

  • Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love me some Sly! (growin up I always had this thing for Cynthia). Not that I thought she was super gorgeous. Yeah I found her attractive but she just DID IT for me. I wanted to meet her and take her out. EVEN THOUGH I WAS ONLY 10 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

  • @rosss1959 You were 10. I was 9. Great minds think alike!

  • Burn in he'll sly

  • he broke so much ground on so many levels, musically and socially-agree that his influence has shaped so much music that followed his peak years, maybe more than anyone else

  • charlie manson-- he got in and got out before this song came out.

  • Thanks to Sly & The Family Stone, I'm still standing!!

  • Is this the original version of the song or is the Jackson 5 one the original because I have heard the Jackson 5 one too and it sounds a lot better than this, no offence but this one sounds a bit creepy.

  • @Lannielst This is Sly's song and he can play it any way he likes.

  • @Lannielst

aaaa....there was no Jackson Five when Sly did this!

  • If you don't STAND for something, you'll fall for anything

  • reading the lyrics while listening to this..damn

ever feel when an artist seems to be speaking directly to you?

    this song !

  • thank you d'angelo fore without you i would not have learnt of the art of prince and thank u prince for talking so much about sly and the family stone that I have fallen in love with the funk and this band

    This band is amazing!

  • To everyone on this page, Sly Stone once said

"Don't hate the black, don't hate the white; if you get bitten, hate the bite."

As I read some of the below comments, I can clearly see the iggnorance in modern culture and society blaming the moral decline on racial matters and not the true cause, iggnrance and biggotry.

  • this song is really uplifting

  • Frank, stop blaming your problems on other people.

  • @Frank4268 Wow, you are out in space asshole!

  • @Frank4268 Its wackjobs like you who make us normal patriotic conservatives who arent ignorant racists look bad.

  • Frank - you need to shut the F*** up. We're here for the music; great music - go post your political crap views somewhere else. Just "dance to the music" lol.!!!! Badfingerfan1 has said it so true - Sly is a legend to the music world!! Sly's songs have a lot of great words to take heed!

  • @Frank4268 Frank...I didn't read any of your post even if you do make a point. I'm just here to tell you to shut the fuck up like everyone else.

  • @Frank4268 You are an Arsehole.

  • @Frank4268

I saw your page. There's some rock n roll on there. You know, rock n roll was invented by black folks, don't you?

If you right-wing nutjobs were in charge back in the 50s, rock n roll and R&B would've been outlawed as an assault on the moral fibre of america. But now that music is one of the few things about America that garners any goodwill.

Ironic, isn't it? God works that way.

  • ...this jam at the end is so groovy

  • Happy Birthday Sylvester Stewart, you are one of a kind. I'm proud that we were both born in the State of Texas. You are a legend to in the music world.

  • ...he's the greatest !!!
