Geezer from the Summer of Love...Grew up in Sanazay, the Haight just up the street...kinda. Saw SO many greats Joplin, Morrison, the Plane,Stones, Zeppelin...but best show I ever saw was Sly at Stanford just before he coked his brains out..Cracks me up that his tunes still pop up and you KNOW it's him and he's still a funkin genius..
This is such a great song, and it's fun to see everyone in the band looking so happy and righteous. Is that Michael Jackson in the front row right in front of Sly?
I have been listening to alot of Sly and the Family lately. Sly is a genious in my opinion, I love his lyrics. My favorite lyrics in in this particular song: "Stand! Don't you know that you are free? At least in your mind if you want to be".
great band except for one thing !!!! they were notorious for letting people wait . i was at a concert in a small arena in 1970 roughly and they were 2 hrs late then made us wait another hour before they came on stage . i vowed then id never go to another concert . too bad they eventually lost gigs because of it. noiw hes homeless living in a car karma i guess
I remember back in the day! local bands were killing this jam right here!~in B-More in Garrison Jr high School gym a lot of summers ago~They had a dance there! and the Music could be heard all over the neighborhood! the band was Kicking ASS!~with this jam right here! Man those were the days!!~
Kids, this is from the days when everyone was coming together, not breaking apart. Saw the Family Stone in 1968 and 1969 in gyms, everyone in the place danced all night (not sitting down, like concerts today). They had a great message, great vocals, the guy who invented funk bass (Larry Graham), were real family, and Sly was one great musical director. There has never been a better live dance band and they brought people together.
@marinman39 You know thats right! My kids WISH they had grown up when I did because they love the music from this era! When music had a message and vocalists had TALENT and could sing their ASS off! People back then were trying to make a difference and come together. WE had no time for racism and bigotry! These guys were great vocalists and real musicians. You went to house parties and concerts and DANCED and I mean danced to the music, and had a good time.
So sad to hear that the great Sly Stone is living in a van in Los Angeles, I just might drive down to the area he's been known to frequent and buy him a lunch and thanks him for all the great music he's given us.
@rocksinger45 God bless you for that.....hopefully all those in the music industry who have been influenced by Sly Stone(and I am sure there are many) will give the man a hand up in his attempt to get clean.
"Everyday People`` was the second 45 record I ever bought with my allowance as a kid....I played the thing to death, and have been a Sly Stone fan ever since.
Lets hope he gets back on his feet and making music again soon.
@FMHammyJ Bless you too...I've been sober 21 years now and I wish for Sly the same support that my friend showed me for him too....come on Sly fans show some LOVE for the man.
man we were so blessed to have experienced all this great music :D. i dont have any clue what these kids listen to today. but i know we were swinging :D
@jazzynet1 You know thats right! I was a young kid and then a teenager and I had all of Sly's jams! This was one bad brother and one bad BAND! I also have no clue what the kids listen to today! My kids listen to my stuff! LOL!
@sharkclip1 when it comes to good music I don't make comparisons. I love Jimi, James, Parliment, and Sly for all of the individual greatness they've provided us. I LOVE ALL GOOD MUSIC :-D.
Sly and the family Stone were [ARE] one of my all-time favorite groups back in the early 70's- 80's. Albums i had were; Greatest Hits, Small Talk, Fresh, There's a Riot Goin on, cant remember the others right now... ;)

@ATeam192 >WORD! This man was the original PRINCE for real! I grew up with this group! This man and his family could sing their asses off anything. They took you to church and back! I saw them perform at the Apollo Theater and they brought the house down in 72! I read about how they started! What a story! Sly was a monster talent! I get goosebumps just listening to this song which is my favorite by them!
@ZunZaraVoMu damn straight, bought the sly stone boxset yesterday, heard him for the first time, impossible to be sad or down when these grooves are hittin you
the idea of kool went when shooting someone over a pair of nike's happened. know all that matters is who makes the the item and how the name can be seen on it. it's phat to be seen with stickers still on a yankes hat... no more jimmy or sly looking like they just left a movie set.

funny he's sitting down while singing for us to stand...lol im just bein a jerk. this song is amazing, classic! the jackson five have a nice version too
What sweet souls Sly and the Family was/is. Soul. Soul, soul and more soul, Sly is soul. And what a performer-outfits, hats, moves, vocals, horns, they had it all.
Iam latino and because of the anti'immigrant laws that happen today, this great song hits my mind everytime. Sly wrote an anthem that will never never die which has a harmony and melody that many new red neck cowboys singers will never have. This is the problem with music today. Many performers believe themselves that they are gods and they need to much for learning.
Prince did much more than any other entertainer in the last century. You really have to hear/see ALL Prince's work, bootleg or not, to understand this reason.
I do agree that Sly would of gone higher in the 80s though. He is an underrated genius.

@sandplacer .. yes i totally agree.. unlike this computerized crap flooding n the markets today.. earth wind n fire, tower of power, average white band to name a few.... HEY WHERES THE MAN FORMERLY KNOWN AS PRINCE!!
There's something truly magical about Sly's music. I can't put my finger on it, but no doubt, it's there and it's beyond words. Thanks Sly; hope life is being good to you.
Man, I had some great "trips" on this music. This is when it was about the MUSIC. Today, it is about just exactly how badly you can out-whore your counterparts. These fools today wouldn't know real music/talent if it hit them between the eyes. I'm trying to think of one, just ONE, song that has been made in the last just 10 years, that left an impression on me, and I'm drawing a blank. Thank you God for letting me be born in the late 50's. It's been a hell of a ride.
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love me some Sly! (growin up I always had this thing for Cynthia). Not that I thought she was super gorgeous. Yeah I found her attractive but she just DID IT for me. I wanted to meet her and take her out. EVEN THOUGH I WAS ONLY 10 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
he broke so much ground on so many levels, musically and socially-agree that his influence has shaped so much music that followed his peak years, maybe more than anyone else
Is this the original version of the song or is the Jackson 5 one the original because I have heard the Jackson 5 one too and it sounds a lot better than this, no offence but this one sounds a bit creepy.
thank you d'angelo fore without you i would not have learnt of the art of prince and thank u prince for talking so much about sly and the family stone that I have fallen in love with the funk and this band
"Don't hate the black, don't hate the white; if you get bitten, hate the bite."
As I read some of the below comments, I can clearly see the iggnorance in modern culture and society blaming the moral decline on racial matters and not the true cause, iggnrance and biggotry.
Nonsense. Hair-brained liberals and Far Left 'progressives' played a large part in America's social and moral decline, among other things; the rest is the fault of a criminal, permanent Black underclass as well as other unassimilable minorities who are a huge drain on our country and its productive, law-abiding citizens, among other reasons.
As far as prejudice goes, my liberal, bleeding-heart German friend, what do you know about Blacks and the untold misery they cause White folks?
Frank - you need to shut the F*** up. We're here for the music; great music - go post your political crap views somewhere else. Just "dance to the music" lol.!!!! Badfingerfan1 has said it so true - Sly is a legend to the music world!! Sly's songs have a lot of great words to take heed!
@Frank4268 Frank - you need to shut the F*** up. We're here for the music; great music - go post your political crap views somewhere else. Just "dance to the music" lol.!!!! Badfingerfan1 has said it so true - Sly is a legend to the music world!! Sly's songs have a lot of great words to take heed!
I saw your page. There's some rock n roll on there. You know, rock n roll was invented by black folks, don't you?
If you right-wing nutjobs were in charge back in the 50s, rock n roll and R&B would've been outlawed as an assault on the moral fibre of america. But now that music is one of the few things about America that garners any goodwill.
Happy Birthday Sylvester Stewart, you are one of a kind. I'm proud that we were both born in the State of Texas. You are a legend to in the music world.

There's something truly magical about Sly's music. I can't put my finger on it, but no doubt, it's there and it's beyond words. Thanks Sly; hope life is being good to you.
PEACE

Man, I had some great "trips" on this music. This is when it was about the MUSIC. Today, it is about just exactly how badly you can out-whore your counterparts. These fools today wouldn't know real music/talent if it hit them between the eyes. I'm trying to think of one, just ONE, song that has been made in the last just 10 years, that left an impression on me, and I'm drawing a blank. Thank you God for letting me be born in the late 50's. It's been a hell of a ride.

Is this the original version of the song or is the Jackson 5 one the original because I have heard the Jackson 5 one too and it sounds a lot better than this, no offence but this one sounds a bit creepy.

@Lannielst This is Sly's song and he can play it any way he likes.

To everyone on this page, Sly Stone once said
"Don't hate the black, don't hate the white; if you get bitten, hate the bite."

I saw your page. There's some rock n roll on there. You know, rock n roll was invented by black folks, don't you?
If you right-wing nutjobs were in charge back in the 50s, rock n roll and R&B would've been outlawed as an assault on the moral fibre of america. But now that music is one of the few things about America that garners any goodwill.
Ironic, isn't it? God works that way.
