CO$ does not give money to ANYTHING that is not going to help them make more money in the long run. They would have (and probably still will and are) regging public to donate for this even though REH bowed out and turned the CO$ down. DM will use everything and anything as an excuse/reason to get public to donate money to RTC, IAS, CCHR, or one of hundreds of other things. One thing is certain....CO$ does nothing for free.
I can see people not trusting Scientology but what exactly did they do wrong here? I think it's within their right and a bit generous of them as well to donate to their community.
@rba718 because the CO$ does not do "charity". They do not do anything that cannot be used to get their own public to donate money to them until they bleed. They do nothing to help the homeless (they are broken beings and do not deserve it) or the poor (same thing). Usually they show up for photo ops with their VM's who pass out pamphlets and do "touch assists". They do nothing else and are usually run out by the people who are actually helping.
@imnotlookinganyway Way to put words in my mouth. I never said anything about that kind of charity, they were contributing towards a fundraiser. So what if they're also passing around papers? Ooooh! Scary Pamphlets! Every other religion does the same fucking thing. They're not bothering anyone and if you don't want to take their "tests" all you have to say is "No thanks".
@rba718 A fundraiser, and a charity are the same thing, but I digress.
That's just what happened. The members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall said "no thanks" to $cientology.
The REH organization has nothing to do with $cientology. So their members obviously don't want to be proselytized at one of $cn's compounds. It's not that hard to understand. They also didn't want $cn to get their private information, and they wanted the fundraiser to be held on their terms, not $cientology's.
@rba718 The money that $cn was going to raise came with strings attached. $cn wanted to hold the fund-raising event on their own property, at the Fort Harrison Hotel. The place were Lisa McPherson died. This was clearly a deceptive attempt by $cn bring community members with money into one of their cult compounds, and buy respect. The members of the REH are smart. They obviously didn't want go to the Fort Harrison Hotel, or have anything to do with $cn, and who can blame them?
More than anything $cientology wanted to buy some respect and credibility. The new report forgot to mention that the $10000 $ci was going to raise came with strings attached. $ci was going to hold charity at the Ford Harrison Hotel, one of $ci's most notorious compounds. The place where Lisa McPherson was held against her will until she died. I'm sure $ci also would've used the charity to recruit new members of the public, people that would normally never set foot into one of their compounds.
Pulling out of that deal with the cult was a very wise decision. $cientology never gives to charity- it only "donates" in order to gain good PR ("valuable product" as the cult call it).
Sadly, the deluded few left in the cult who give their money to the "IAS" are just buying Miscavige silk shirts and expensive lawyers.
A wise move by the RE Theater, who should never have gotten into bed with this pernicious cult in the first place.

It's not some happy shiny goofy UFO "religion". It's a malicious mind-controlling cult that brutally intimidates its critics and ex-members, and cruelly abuses its adherents. Google it, and get informed.
@mrgreebly Because DM never uses any of the principal money in his billion dollar war chest. Only the interest. And the rest of the interest goes to fund all the PI's and dudes with the cameras on their heads...no one gets out of the CO$ and talks about it. If they stay quiet they are left alone. But as soon as they talk about the abuses and things that are being done by DM the PI's are set on you like a pack of dogs.
Is Fox funded by Co$? Most know what would happen if it went to fruition. It would be like the Godfather scene: Bonasera: Be my friend – Godfather.
[The Don shrugs, Bonasera bows toward the Don and kisses the Don's hand]
Don Corleone: Good. Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day – accept this justice as a gift...
Kudos to REH to rebuff such tactics. Co$ is a CULT!!!!

I would bet that the cult plans on buying the building. They never do anything without some other motives.

Scientology tries to buy influence with donations. Wise move to turn down the cult's ill-gotten cash.
