The drummer is my brother, and he has lived in Virginia since 1980. He was at the reunion show about five years ago or so. I have no idea who the people in the videos from Club Congress are though. The only one I recognized was Peter. He and my brother went to The U of A in the late 60's,
The band had Peter, George, Woody, and Im embarrassed that I dont remember the steel guitar players name. He was one of the nicest guys in the band. Woody was a good guy and shared the singing with Peter. The fiddle was quite the addition to the sound of the band. I loved their songs, Annabelle Walker, Domino Joe, Roley Poley, and the Freak Song, were standards that we heard every night. I saw them the first time in July of 1973 at Ray and Reds, which at that time was the oldest bar in Arizona.
I used to work at Big Monks next door to the Poco Loco at Alvernon and Speedway. The Chaps were in there hay day. I absolutely loved the band. On Friday and Saturday nights after closing the hamburger bay that bar patrons could order from. I would go next door and dance till they closed. I used to dance with the best dancers in the joint. It was a great place to go. I loved the Dusty Chaps.
Went to the reunion concert 9/42010. Really enjoyed it. It wasn't quite as tight as a reunion concert they did a few years ago at the El Casino Ballroom but it was still really good. Petey was obviuosly having a lot of fun. The good news is they were video recording it, to put on You Tube, so you should be seeing some live Chaps soon.
@bighig53 Thanks for the update. I wanted to go but I was in Prescott for the holiday. I would really love to see a video of their performance so if anyone has it, please put it up!!
My brother was the Chaps drummer. He & Peter went to The U of A together in the late 60's. He also played the reunion gig at The El Casino. I have no idea who the people in the Club Congress videos are. The only one I recognize is Peter. He is living in Virginia and has been teaching and coaching there since the early 80's. He is still playing music though!
I hear they are doing a reunion in Tucson Labor Day 2010. They played at my wedding in 1981. Pictures are great for Tucson/Arizona Memories. Thanks for Sharing.
Now I have to go hunting around for this version of Honky Tonk Music. . . just finally found the CD version after having a couple vinyl copies of Domino Joe the last 30 years. These guys were great, wish I knew other music George Hawke had written or bands he was in. Peter Gierlach is a great vocalist, too.
The two Capitol albums, 'honky tonk music" & "domino joe" are available as a CD purchase from Collector's Choice Music. This is the version of "Honky Tonk Music" from the independent release that came out in Arizona prior to Capitol picking them up. It is a little bit slower than the "major label" release
