  • Good one

  • i don't understand your gestures and signs but my heart is with you..I admire you for doing this video.

  • Well, They should remove the University then put back old College and All the hearing Students out of Gally campus Period.......................

  • I'm trying to understand. It is considered rude to talk on a cell phone, just walking to class by yourself? Walking on campus, I hear people talk on their cell phones in Spanish, Hmong, Arabic, Japanese, etc, and can't understand any of it. It's normal for us to not understand private cell conversations and happens all the time. In fact, we'd rather NOT hear them sometimes! (like cellphone fights, bathroom cellphone talk) Is it a difference in expectation of intimacy level and understanding?

  • I know this vid is old but I just saw this. I am hearing & would LOVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME TO GALLAUDET someday. Anyway, I fully SUPPORT & UNDERSTAND your message in this video! RESPECT!

  • I am a CODA, and my mom was mainstreamed, so she grew up oral and is now only beginning to learn ASL. I have accompanied her on this journey. I have such Deaf pride, and I really am passionate about the language. But it's very disheartened to me when I feel that d/Deaf people don't seem to warm up to us hearies. It makes me feel like I am intruding =( I want to go to Gally for the terp program, but this makes me second guess because my ASL isn't perfect and I don't want to be disrespectful.

  • @badabingbambino to take formal classes at gallaudet you have to pass a sort of ASL literacy test if my information is correct. also no matter where you're taking classes, deaf people -typically- are very supportive while you're learning asl and your skills are still growing. even if you don't know a sign, refrain from speaking, either gesture or fingerspell, it shows respect. also if you're with a group of deaf/HoH people and for some reason you MUST speak, it's polite to sign also.

  • Totally agreed! You need more supporters so they could help make these hearing people reduce their culture into this deafhood. And you are right heairng people are rude because they tried to destroy our deaf culture included ASL.

  • I agree with you completely!!! And I hope their ignorance doesn't hinder my chances of getting in :(

  • *rolls eyes*

Growing up as the lone deaf guy in a family of all hearing people, I'm sorry to say this: Deal with the changes or just leave Gally altogether. Crying wolf to the world on a video-sharing website like this won't help because you'd only get scorned.

And, I agree with that guy (or gal) who said that deafies have a "chip on their shoulders" - this is not the 1960s. Quit with the attitudes and maybe hearies won't suppress you so much.

  • Sound like it is time to have Gallaudet University transition to Deaf Town of ASL that will save ASL and Deaf Culture. Thanks for your moral. Appreciated it!

  • Deaf pride!

  • Aren't you from Kansas? Kansans shake more ground than anyone else! Yes, ASL and Deaf Center all the way to the CORE should be what it's all about, no other way around! Mulitude of Hearing people, and even HOH, and some deaf folks think they can get a free pass and not learn ASL + not be Deaf Centered are = true oppressors of humanity! Its a right to protect Deafhood, and it has nothing to do with deafness! Rest of the world, Evils of audism wants Death to Deafhood!

  • Shane, thanks for doing this vlog. It was indeed a lovely and expressive one! I hope folks associated with Gally see this video--those who don't acknowledge or support the Deaf-centered space. They can certainly speak in their voiced language in their bedrooms--spaces like that, but it is pretty disrespectful to use simultaneous communication or not use signs at a Deaf university. Hope the students and the employees of Gally can do something about it eventually. Thanks for spreading awareness.

  • Woe you are a tough fox. Do not worry many. Spiritually minded people know Audism and love asl and deaf way yes we have our right to have deaf space there. I am a deaf vegetarian and we a veggie have a right to have veggie space at the seva site of

Petaluma where I work as a deaf mechanic

    Stop Audism is a must

  • Very powerful vlog, Shane. There are good reasons sim com has been discredited--it interferes with the sign signal in both production and comprehension. There is plenty of evidence on this.

  • i wonder if it would be ok if i ask what you are signing about. i am wanting to learn and be educated about sign language and deaf/hoh. i am very new to this but my son was born completely deaf so i would like to be informed. i have begun to learn sign and i want to learn about deaf culture and to make sure i dont do anything offensive..

  • Who discussed it last year for 4 months? I didn't see anything about a discussion at Gallaudet.

  • Amen! I agree with you @ 100%. Gallaudet University purpose for deaf student to enroll there as "Deaf University". The hearing people should turn their voice off and use talking with their hands while they are there and need to learn to do for ASL. I understand why hearing people to enroll there to learn ASL and interpreting in their future. They should not do audism at Gallaudet University.

  • Since Gally allow hearing students to join its undergrad program back in the mid to late '80's, Gally ceased to become the only University for the Deaf in the world. Times have changed and you need to get use to it. What you did to them was wrong. They were right to get angry with you. They refused to have you oppressed them at Gally.

Come to think if it, why did you type what you said in the description? Isn't sign language enough?

  • This is the reason so many hearing people say that Deaf people have a "Chip on their shoulders."

I am sorry, but you are wrong. Gallaudet's motto refers to a "BI-culture" school. If it was a DEAF ONLY school, hearing people wouldnt be there. Us hearing students are here to be your allies, not to be oppressed by Deaf.

I use my cell phone on campus bc you can use a Sorenson booths in private, but we dont have private areas for cell phone use, and I will not sit on the toilet to talk on my phone!

  • @Jay8607 I agree completely.

  • Great Vlog! We need to fix it!

  • Shane - I agree with you.. It is those hearing people who think they can "control" us. It is time to FIGHT BACK and STOP AUDISM! Good job! Hope to see you at Film Festival! =)

  • THANK YOU! that goes NTID too. That s why I left because i felt so oppressed by them. they have no self respect so therefore they are not respecting our Deaf people of the Deaf community.

  • Gallaudet is like the Sorbonne in France, a world respected educational institution where French is the language of custom. It would be inappropriate to use English or any other language there.

People go there for immersion in French history, culture and language, and to experience the wholeness of being French. To insist on English is missing out on the experience, cheating oneself. In addition, one exposes oneself to criticism, loss of credibility and becoming unneccessarily defensive.

  • I agree wholeheartedly. Gallaudet belongs to the Deaf and their language. That woman, being a CODA, should have understood that. You would expect a CODA of all people to be more sensitive and aware.

  • Why not he ask your friends to take video (record) via pagers (iphone) toward audism while he talk with them? After that, you can share those video clips. They will learn their big lessons when we develop more evidence on video clips.

  • spdundas37-

15 acres? Kendall Green is my home. I grew up there and Gallaudet has 99 acres of land. It is important that American Sign Language is accessible to all children and adults that goes there everyday.

    :-D

  • (cont'd) Heck, no. So, why should Gallaudet take it? Gallaudet, take back your University by implementing plans through SBG!

  • Out of all places, Gallaudet is supposed to be a safe haven of audism-free zone. It is time for a call for a task force and a re-evaluation of the need of cultural sensitivity awareness that is mandatory for all students especially who are non-Deaf. Imagine a non-member of the majority ethnic cultural group going to that University (i.e. Harvard) and behaves in a such arrogant way that does not show respect of other's language and culture, would the University tolerate such behavior? (cont'd)

  • Well said by you! It will put at risk if someone goes too far. Language planning should be in place in some regions where sign language is used.

  • HI there...Shame on those ignorant people who did NOT show any respect for our language, the most important features are eyes and hands in order to express ideas and concerns. Gallaudet University should promote awareness on ASL and its culture and language. Only 15 acres is NOT too much to ask for Deaf Space.

  • First, wow what a topic for a first vlog! And welcome to vlogging.

Secondly, that's UNFORTUNATE what happened. Apparently if they re students there too, Gally has not emphasized to them enough or at all not to do those things on campus. May I suggest u check student handout as well as board/college policy re this? Have you filed a formal grievance report? Audism plus apparent bullying. Yes, ur points well made and need to be heeded. And i worry about the CODA as well.

  • Wow! You're very right about its history, etc. I was there, it was fine until ~'99 & 2K. Just a few incidents of audism. ~30 hearing Belgian women who came there for a study of speech therapy or something. All of them were ugly. They didn't look at any of us the entire time they were at the cafeteria. Their hatred was scary. After I left, I saw (heard) that Gally has more and more courses like audiology, speech therapy, and the like. Try to talk to SBG about that group.

  • Your concerns are valid. Certain people should wise up in that small deaf space island that you described. It is disrespectful. Too bad for apathetic leadership at Gallaudet and agreed that they should re-clarify this issue for everyone on campus to ensure a constant signing environment.

  • Hi Spdundas37

This is John and I was the former student of Gallaudet University, Class of 89'. I was too suprised what you said in your vlog. I agreed with you in all the way! My Suggestion is please start to talk with the Gallaudet's Student Body Government (SBG) about that issue. Please set up the hidden Camera what they do to you in Cafe , More evidence as show. Then last step is go talk and have meeting with Gallaudet University President. Show him the video and let what he thinks ?

  • Deaf people can talk. Talking is future of deaf society. Youre going to have to suck it up for a change. Accept evolution of deaf society. Money talks. Talk is money for Gallaudet if it wants to survive in the future.

  • You are not alone. We will support you all way. Sim-com is still alive in Gallaudet University and still policy in English Department. I knew some coda are terrible attitude in the Deaf community at all. Some coda think that Deaf professional would never climb to the higher position and often look down at Deaf community. They do have low expectation about Deaf students at Deaf school for many many years. I always wonder why coda often look down at Deaf kids the due of their experience?
