@W4LL37SK83R How am I a Intel fanboy if i'm praising the phenom 2's & my secondary rig is running a x6 & 6870 in crossfire. I'm simply stating the fact that FX sucks. Ever since the core 2 days, Intel has been able to put out very high quality and performance chips at a very competitive price. IDC who makes the chips as long as they are the best thing available for the price range and offer the most flexibility in terms of upgrade paths. It was amd with am3 and am3+. Now its Intel with 1155.

I have been thinking about buying one of these but I am a bit reticent. From the information I see online, the socket 2012 is about to be released and this is yet another completely different motherboard spec if I am not mistaken. Is this correct? I am just wondering why they released socket 2011 so close to 2012 just before they confirmed new architecture. Am I missing something here?
@SymonDymond It's just a scheme designed for Intel to make more money is all. However, that's not going to work due to all the people who sunk on a 3960x (assuming that they could even afford it) and all the people not willing to bank all their money on a 1,000 dollar and upwards processor, regardless of the hardware capabilities.

Personally sandbridge was no good to me at all untill the x79 and the 3939 and 3960 due to the pcie lane bottleneck (ignoring the nvidia jury rigging chip that tries to cover it on some mobos). But now they finally release it, I am not sure that there wont be a better choice along in 2 months or so. That would truly suck after spending a 1000 dollars. Seriously pissed with intel product marketing making confusing things.wont buy until I am clear.

@BenqS42 Yeah but we have options. By that time the 3960x will be cheaper, so you could buy another one with a dual socket motherboard and run two of those bad boys. Or you could sell the cpu and buy an Ivy Bridge-E (better start saving!), which will be completely compatible with the rig you allready got. I honestly dont think theres a problem getting one now. The fact is X79 is here to stay so theres nothing wrong in getting it now.

Why not? I'm not doing any serious overclocking (but I'm doing maxed out gaming and video encoding ;)) and my CPU never reaches 78°C (the maximum temperature I ever got was 77°C on one core during a two hrs Prime95 run).
Of course I'm running stock frequencies, but I don't see the point of overclocking here, since the CPU load very rarely touches 90%...
I see that you need more potent cooling for OC'ing, but stock coolers aren't always shit.

I understand that the lifetime of the cpu CAN be reduced if it's running nonstop at high temps. But do you really think Intel would give us a cooler that isn't potent enough to cool the CPU with stock settings?
I've been into computers for many years now and I never had any problems with temperatures (my first processor went up to 80°C for multiple hours and it is still running in an old PC of mine).
I have the same audio interface as you! I'm running Pro tools 10 with a Q6600 CPU and its actually doing pretty good unless I throw a million plug ins at it. If only I had a couple thousand lying around for this haha

Overclocking pulls a lot more current than before (~200W max)

I can recommend a motherboard for you if you tell me what you want on it, what are your priorities. Just asking but how experienced are you in computers. like is this your first, second etc... This was my second build, and i'm only 13.
@Transfusiionz This'll be my second build. I'm 17. I'm pretty experienced with PCs (this one needed a few things replaced). M/B wise, I was thinking of eventually going SLI (all boards have 2/3-way SLI) and 4 RAM DIMMs and 2133MHz RAM support are my two big things. SATA ports are limited on X79, but I only got 2 SATA drives. I can't think of anything else right now.

Well back then you had more money in your pocket so you can afford that $1000 100mhz intel processor. Things are different now, costs are going down for computer parts and it has nothing to do with inflation, but capitalism and the free-market. It's the same thing with televisions and other electronics. Prices are going down DESPITE inflation. It also helps that computer hardware is much less regulated compared to computers software, which has regressed over time.

Nevertheless, reason I purchased this for the exact reason what you stated here. My previous computer drive me crazy, quad core with 2gb of ram 8800gtx. You simply cannot multi-task with this setup and so what i needed was power, REAL power for todays applications and i'm glad i purchased this cpu. great review!

In my opinion Intel is very clever at marketing and sales, and what do they do? they spread and market their products to all classes of people in terms of purchasing power. They got the low end cpu all the way to the high end. They do this to maximize profits ofcourse, but what if majority of the demand comes from the youth for high performing products? ages 15-35? then this as i believe intel is losing revenue. thx.

@LickMyTurm Bulldozer isn't trying to compete with Intel's high-ends. Bulldozer is midrange, so it compares to the 2500K. This 3960X is for extreme, high-end users. I have an 1100t, and I'm satisfied with it for my needs.

@Transfusiionz thank you :) I think I'll be getting the same kit. which motherboard do you have? I haven't set a m/b budget yet (GB's UD3 is $270 in Canada, enthusiast boards are only 60 more). I've been eyeing up the XFX 1250W Pro (650W just won't cut it for me). I'm currently waiting for the 3820 to drop before buying into LGA2011.

@MrShyguy0 I have an EVGA x79 classified, although it seems you are going for a little lower end than my rig, i would check out some motherboards like the rampage iv extreme or sabertooth x79. for a power supply i have a thermaltake toughpower 1500w, yes overpowered but i plan on sli'ing a few graphics cards. any more questions are welcome

@Transfusiionz Thanks for answering my questions. I'm planning to build a rig with an entry level CPU and the option to upgrade later. I'm thinking Asus X79 Sabertooth. I'm looking to get an XSPC watercooling (RX360 w/ DDC 3.25) kit from dazmode[dot]com. My big problem is that all the e-tailers are out of stock. IMO, 1500 is great for X79. Overclocking pulls a lot more current than before (~200W max)

@MrShyguy0 I don't really use watercooling that much so I can't help much there, but on my rig I used a Corsair h100 and temps are really good at standard clocks. I can recommend a motherboard for you if you tell me what you want on it, what are your priorities. Just asking but how experienced are you in computers. like is this your first, second etc... This was my second build, and i'm only 13.

@Transfusiionz This'll be my second build. I'm 17. I'm pretty experienced with PCs (this one needed a few things replaced). M/B wise, I was thinking of eventually going SLI (all boards have 2/3-way SLI) and 4 RAM DIMMs and 2133MHz RAM support are my two big things. SATA ports are limited on X79, but I only got 2 SATA drives. I can't think of anything else right now.

Well back then you had more money in your pocket so you can afford that $1000 100mhz intel processor. Things are different now, costs are going down for computer parts and it has nothing to do with inflation, but capitalism and the free-market. It's the same thing with televisions and other electronics. Prices are going down DESPITE inflation. It also helps that computer hardware is much less regulated compared to computers software, which has regressed over time.

@ motherboardsorg. I didn't buy this cpu for gaming and i understand why most gamers would complain about the price. Possibly they are young and don't have that kind of purchasing power. Nevertheless, reason I purchased this for the exact reason what you stated here. My previous computer drive me crazy, quad core with 2gb of ram 8800gtx. You simply cannot multi-task with this setup and so what i needed was power, REAL power for todays applications and i'm glad i purchased this cpu. great review!

@maxwelle103 the only strike against this cpu is the crazy price. In my opinion Intel is very clever at marketing and sales, and what do they do? they spread and market their products to all classes of people in terms of purchasing power. They got the low end cpu all the way to the high end. They do this to maximize profits ofcourse, but what if majority of the demand comes from the youth for high performing products? ages 15-35? then this as i believe intel is losing revenue. thx.

@LickMyTurm Bulldozer isn't trying to compete with Intel's high-ends. Bulldozer is midrange, so it compares to the 2500K. This 3960X is for extreme, high-end users. I have an 1100t, and I'm satisfied with it for my needs.
