  • @xenophrenia - Taking refuge in matters of definition are you? When sovereignty resided in the persons of kings, empire was easier to define, true. Today, one must examine who are in the ruling classes, for whom presidents, prime ministers and their foreign puppet-allies are mere proxies. The subjugation abroad and poverty at home is a constant and tell-tale characteristic of all empire.

  • We invade and occupy foreign countries on the basis of false claims of imminent threats (WMDs) and the so-called "war on terror". This is what empires do. They use propaganda to gain popular acceptance at home, and they send their armies and navies to invade foreign nations on the basis of false propaganda.

  • @goedelite - I think a great deal depends on the definition of empire and the inclinations of the person using the word ... while I do agree with you - a strict definition may side more with Richard.
